I went to the German Gymnasium when I was not well.
It is a good place. They have a good and comfortable environment. The sitting is very cozy and comfortable. The food is also very delicious.
Came here for a work dinner. No real complaints, but not memorable or special. Had smoked duck appetizer - meh. The sea bass entree was fine. The dessert (chocolate tart) was the best part. ... Unique setting (building and ambience).
Must call for a table reservation! The price they charge is equivalent to the service and food quality. The place is modern and yet very inviting and comfortable. They offer a good wine list. We had oysters and Ham for starters (all emptied out right away ;) ), Our mains were Seared Seabass, Salmon, Beef Fillet. They were very kind to ask if we had dietary restrictions or FDA (food and diet allergies) when we made our reservation.
Ambience:: 4/5 (Classy, Elegant. Table sizes could be more bigger but not a real problem)
Food:: 4/5 (My husband is very picky when it comes to meat and he had no qualms or complains about his plate)
Menu:: 4/5 Nice selections and the have a fairly extensive list of wines which they can offer by glass or by bottle or carafe.
Service: Amazingly good and superb!
Food Presentation: 5/5 (it was very pleasing to the eye and most of all, delectable)
VALUE FOR MONEY:: 4.5/5 absolutely worth it!

Went this week with friends for dinner. We had read some mediocre reviews about the food, so we were cautious but still wanted to try.
Good thing we did. Starting at the location over the food up until the service everything was great.
The place feels grand but still intimate with warm colors and warm lighting.
Our waitress (German) was very attentive and friendly.
Now the food. We had the tartare for the meat lovers and the pumpkin soup for the vegetarian. The pumpkin soup was flavorful, rich and cream without being heavy.
The tartare apparently was also very good.
Then obviously many opted for the schnitzel. Which was very very very large and well breaded. Not dry or anything.
I had the "Schupfnudeln" with wild mushrooms and truffles. And everybody at the table who tried it was jealous. Which is impressive for a vegetarian dish. The portion was just right. But definitely shouldn't have been smaller.
We then shared some desserts. Again everything was formidable and we couldn't decide which one was the best, the apfelstrudel or the chocolate dessert (don't remember what exactly it was).
Anyway, highly recommended while not cheap it's what you would expect from a high class restaurant. But yes 30 pounds for a schnitzel and 20 pounds for a plate of pasta with mushrooms is nothing you would spend everyday.

It even upped its cool factor with Central Saint Martin College, the world-famous art college, planting its roots firmly here.

There is no shortage of things to do in the area with Granary Square hosting outdoor festivals and cinemas, Frame with its outdoor yoga and fitness sessions and of course, a train ride to Paris!
German Gymnasium, part of the heavy weight restaurant group D&D London, has grabbed a site which was originally a sporting association for the German Gymnastics Association, on Kings Boulevard.
As I had my shoe designer friend in from Los Angeles (sounds so glam I know), I thought it would be nice to check out this evolving side of Kings Cross. D&D London have been around for a long time, so I had faith that they would know what they are doing.
There appears to be two areas aside from the bar, which is not immediately clear when you book online. I thought we would be in the Grand Cafe, but as we had chosen an a la carte menu we were put in the restaurant upstairs. The restaurant circles around the edge of the big hall like space, so you can look down into the central Grand Cafe. The restaurant is quite a formal space, so my Metallica t-shirt and Angelo's nose piercing and top-cum-dress was probably a bit of a shock to the business suited and booted diners already there as we sashayed in. Did I care, not a bit. Sling it.
We settled down at our tiny table and started with a half dozen Colchester rock oysters to share. Lush. For main course, Angelo had salmon cutlet with braised Belgium endives and orange emulsion. He was happy with the portion size and taste. I went for the grilled wild jumbo prawns with spinach, garlic and chilli and OMG they were huge. It was literally like you were having lobster meat from its shell. Mutant big. That said, £29.00 is still a bit steep for two of 'em. In terms of wine, I have no idea what we had, as I trusted Virgile, their Sommelier. Now these wine experts can be quite intimidating. They have been known to make you feel like an idiot when you don't know when to sniff, when to swish and when to spit out - but Virgile had the friendliest face ever and was really helpful on the wine descriptions. I wanted dry and light, Angelo wanted sweet and full bodied. We got exactly what we wanted. Please, can all Sommeliers be like Virgile?
Apparently downstairs in the Grand Cafe is where you get snippets of Germany with hot dogs and the like. I don't think I missed out too much on that.
Overall, German Gymnasium is not a casual weekly dining destination for me. The slightly uptight style in the restaurant and its pricieness, makes it more of a special occasion place to impress the folks. I would be keen to check out the cocktail bar though, as that looked really inviting.
Large man-sized portions of meat, usually pork, washed down with great big steins of beer is usually what comes to mind when you think of German cuisine and it’s pretty much all I ate on a holiday in Berlin once so I was hoping for some more sophisticated German cuisine when I heard D&D were opening a swish new place called German Gymnasium.

German style food, good enough to come back again. Fair and correct service. Nice fresh bread basket and butter on the table. Very nice decoration and ambiance. Would recommend the experience.
Beautiful building and interior, and an interesting and creative selection of food on offer. The quality of the food was very good and the quality of the service even better. We were greeted and seated by the very helpful staff at reception and our waiter Adam was very attentive, organised and gracious. Lovely restaurant for a date. I'd say it's more £70 per person but if you like this style of cuisine then it's worth it.
My experience at German Gymnasium was fantastic I went with three friends and we loved it . What a great atmosphere and location. The food was amazing, we had for starters the falafel, bread basket and some fries which were really good. Then we had hot dogs and the veal schnitzel all amazing. Definitely the best part of the meal were the DESSERTS. Absolutely spectacular if you go, make sure to leave some room for dessert. We shared three including the cheesecake, the prailine and the apple strudel. Will go back just to have another bite of those amazing desserts, best ones I’ve had in London. A must go!!

We had dinner there last night. While we had to wait about 1/2 an hour for service due to an electrical fire. We didn’t mind waiting, the staff were amazing, from manager, to hostess to wait staff, all amazing. They kept us updated while we waited. We shared the butchers plate for 2, it was amazing! Especially loved the schnitzel and the pork knuckle, all the sauces were superb. For dessert I had the hazelnut praline and it was one of the best desserts I have ever had. My friend has the Black Forest gateau and loved that too! Honestly, all round fabulous service, all the staff were very attentive, efficient and friendly. Will definitely treat myself again, well worth the money. So glad we chose to eat here after a lovely day out in London, perfect way to end a fabulous day and hop on a train back home afterwards.
Nice restaurant with gigantic venue with high sealing. I like the decor and the ambience for sure. Food was good but very very heavy. Server I got here barely talked and not friendly or attentive at all. Maybe they were understaffed that day but I was constantly looking for him to get extra drink or to ask for anything. It’s good place to go for big group for sure.I would use this place for business outing if anyone was craving for German food.
Spontaneously came here on a Saturday and managed to book a table for dinner! Lovely grade-2 listed building, very cool atmosphere. Great decor and service, food came very promptly and was delicious and very filling (still had space for dessert though 🫢). Will definitely be coming back again!
This place is just so unique, feels like you're sat in a big hall but also feels homely and table are well separated.
Loved the food, had a falafel for starter, a roasted salmon for main and apple strudel for dessert. Others had cheesecake that looked gorgeous 👌

German Gymnasium in London: A Unique Taste of Germany Amidst Historic Charm
I recently dined at the German Gymnasium in London, and it was quite a unique experience. The restaurant stands out for its German cuisine, which can be a rare find in many parts of the world. As for the food, it was good and lived up to the expectations one might have for German cuisine. Nonetheless, the service staff did an excellent job in addressing the issue promptly, which was commendable.
In terms of pricing, I found it to be fair for the quality of German dining we enjoyed. Despite the hiccup, the overall experience at the German Gymnasium was positive, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a taste of Germany in London.
I took my husband here for brunch as he loves pork sausages. The service was great and the food was amazing! I don’t eat sausages, but I tried a little bit and it was really good and I personally love their mashed potatoes.
We also tried their chocolate and apricot cake, stunning. We’ll definitely come back.

I had this written and have only got round to posting but....
The building itself was beautiful. The architecture within was extraordinary which set the tone of the evening. The way the ceiling was grand and felt extravagant really set the tone of the evening.
We were sat promptly and swiftly our order was taken.
The selection was good but I feel that for a German restaurant, the stein wasn't up to par. The beer was good though. The server was friendly and after our starters; Bread Starter(which were delicious but pretty small in portion size) we moved onto our mains. Our mains were the Currywurst- this was good. The only problem was the size portions and the fact that it didn't give me the German vibe that I know when in Germany. Next was the Schnitzel. This was also nice but didn't live up to the standards that I'd expect from a well known German restaurant. The portion size was good but the chicken was pretty dry as well gard hard in parts. All in all the experience was brilliant but the food was average. I would visit again but I feel that I wouldn't order the same foods.
What a fantastic place! My son advised me to try it and I'm glad I did. Food was tasty and well presented. However, because it was only lunchtime both my friend and I only had a small amount. The service was as I like it, attentive, polite and not overpowering. The decor hits the spot for me with that terrific urban vibe. I can't speak highly enough about it
