It was my friend Lucia who suggested meeting at Anima e Cuore to eat one evening and she kindly offered to book, which apparently turned out to be quite a challenge. It’s only open from 6.00-10.00pm Tuesday to Saturday and it’s during these hours, or just before, that you might find someone answers the phone. The next challenge is actually getting a table. Anima e Cuore has been causing an excited gastronomic storm since it opened in 2014 and is always fully booked. Yet from its appearance outside in an insalubrious part of Kentish Town in north London, if you hadn’t heard what was going on inside in the kitchen, you’d very likely walk straight past it. Quickly!

Great food if you can get them to do the decent thing and get their phone to take your reservation. Or at least call back when you leave a message. They think they are too cool for school and don't want anymore diners ! They expect you to make a trip there to make a booking and then dine there ! Poor, poor form.

Upon first glance, it looks like a small Italian deli. And truth be told, not a very good one. When we walked in, the staff ignored us for a little while before informing us they were fully booked. Nonetheless, we were able to sit at a table inside rather than in their garden, and asked for a menu twice before we were even brought tap water. Finally, our waitress came and read us the ‘menu’ – a crumpled-up, handwritten piece of paper. After asking her to repeat nearly everything, and trying to clarify prices (we were only given a range), we finally decided to share a burrata starter, plus two different kinds of pasta.

So we arrived with a bottle of Prosecco to share between two of us, and I spotted that the rest of the restaurant had opted for a bottle of red each - I love how much London takes advantage of BYOB. Anyway, the waiter automatically swapped our glasses for champagne flutes and brought over some delicious complementary bread to share (the way to my heart).

After the absolute task of ordering food off the non existent menu (the waiter reels off about 100 choices for starter and main and you're expecting to REMEMBER these, a glass of Prosecco down), we decided to share starter and dessert and also each other's main. The starter consisted of a stracciatella cheese fondu inside of a "courgette" (which was definitely another kind of squash) with rabbit. This was so indulgently rich so perfect for sharing. Most of the mains featured an exotic take on pasta and we went for fettuccine with duck and a fish plate - I obviously asked for more focaccia to mop this up which we weren't charged for. My highlight was the dessert, a mega moist fig cake. This all said, I'm probably making recommendations that don't even exist anymore as they change the imaginary menu each week. My advice would be to be adventurous and don't expect to pick up your alcohol from a Tesco's nearby to by your wine. The offy next door is obviously capitalising on extortionate bottles of cheap wine and Prosecco - it probably would have cost the same amount to pay for drinks in the restaurant!

It was a cold December's night. Being a little tardy for my friends, I scurried along Kentish Town Road looking for Anime e Cuore, what i imagined to be a busy and alluring Italian restaurant. Something seemed off when I found it; the door sign said closed, all I could see through the window was ice-cream and there were no people in sight. Confident I was at the right address though, I went inside and low and behold, there was a tiny restaurant hiding at the back.

Of the six or seven tables ours was the only one occupied. It was fully booked though (we were there relatively early in the evening and the closed door sign was to prevent any passers by from coming in only to be rejected). There was no music, no menus, no art, with the exception of this charming depiction of the journey of Italian cuisine from Italy to London on the wall:

After a short while a friendly Italian man with a strong accent came to the table with a notebook. He explained that there was no menu because the food is dependent on what fresh ingredients they get that day. He then read out the options, of which there were approximately five starters and mains. This did present a slight issue in that it's quite difficult to remember what is on offer and what everything comes with (especially for those with allergies and other such dietary requirements). However our waiter was kind enough to repeat things where necessary so we got there in the end.

To start I had sea bream in a fairly thick and hearty parsnip veloute which was really lovely and very interesting. My group also had burrata with aubergine dip and a savoury muffin (there may well be a more exotic Italian name which I forget) with cheese ice cream. I really liked both, and have never tried anything similar.

I then had veal with tuna (in a pate-like form), served with a rocket and parmesan salad and green beans. I was forewarned that the veal would be served lukewarm; "good to know" I said. Who knew that veal and tuna were a perfect pair. Well now I do, because the whole dish was fantastic. My friends had pasta, one with ox cheek and the other with wild mushrooms, which again were great. All pasta is made from scratch on site.

It would have been difficult to turn down dessert after such successful starters and mains so we shared a lemon tart, gluten free chocolate cake and cheesecake. I found the cheesecake disappointing as it was slightly lacking in heart and soul (being the English translation of the restaurant's name). The other two were excellent though, so much so that even as a lemon tart disapprover I absolutely loved it.

For these culinary delights we paid £27 each, without wine (it's BYOB). I think it was certainly worth it, and the unassuming atmosphere/appearance on entrance only adds to the unique dining experience.

Had dinner here before going to a show and it was beautiful! We had tuna tartare and the veal and tuna to start and they were so fresh. I had the truffle tagliolini for my main and it was honestly the most delicious pasta I’ve ever eaten! So rich but not too heavy at all. They had such a range of gelatos for dessert as well; we had chocolate & peanut and fig & amaretto. They were the perfect end to the meal as you can choose how many scoops. The staff were really lovely and helpful with the menu. It’s is BYOB and cash only which we didn’t know before going in. They do have a selection of drinks on offer but I think best to choose your own as they didn’t have a big variety in house. The loveliest meal, the only reason I would go 4 and not 5 is because of the decor. The restaurant is quite bare and the table cloths are paper. This actually doesn’t offend me at all but when the food is so well done, you expect it to be from a more put together environment! Would absolutely recommend if you love good food! 😋

4.5 stars. Very very nice fresh Italian food. Located half way between Camden town and Kentish town tube stations on the Northern line. I was a little worried from the street but inside was nice and there is even an outdoor section. Food was well presented (see photos) and delicious. Service was friendly. A touch on the expensive side as it was £70 without alcohol but byo is available. Price justified by the quality of food. Happily recommend.

Anima e Cuore hosted our wedding lunch for our families last week, and it was perfect! The staff are so friendly, and it was super easy to plan private dining with them remotely. Everyone commented how delicious the meal was, how hard it was to choose a starter given all the amazing options, the truffle pasta, the rib eye steak, and even harder to choose between all the flavours of gelato which are so fresh. You guys are the best!

Tagliolini with truffles in Kentish Town? Great. Love the fact it's BYO as well, therefore the wine was expertly chosen and very reasonably priced, because I brought it with me.

Such a warm and friendly place. Delicious food and impeccable service. Décor could do with a makeover. The food is also of remarkable value. Definitely worth a visit. 🍍 Jamie
