Boozy Bunch
+3.5
First: this is not a Boozy Bunch Brunch…sadly. I met up with a friend, and she is not the boozy brunch type. No worries … I can deal with that. We chose Powder Keg Diplomacy based on location and decor. My friend had some blisters from all the sightseeing, and she planned to meet more friends around the corner later on,  so Powder Keg Diplomacy was just in the right place at the right time. Also as my friend was over from America, I thought the Victorian inspired decoration was a nice touch. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, which is advertised as “a picturesque, bright conservatory”.  Personally, I would not call a conservatory, as it had no glass walls, but I was happy to sit in the “conservatory” as it was the brightest place in the this bar. My friend was somehow distracted by the frame design behind me, but my riveting telling of some amazing stories had her focusing on me again soon enough.

Great atmosphere, good brunch and dinner, nice cocktails, little pricey....I have been here for cocktails, brunch and dinner on separate occasioned.  I enjoyed them all and would come more regularly if it wasnt for the price. The cocktails are great and got interesting twist.  The brunch was amazing, although not hearty the omelette was superbe as was the bloody mary (many twists available!)Dinner was also very good but is not cheap.  But the fish was particularly good.Overall i love the vibe just wish it was a little more affordable.

Step through time. Outstanding from start to finish. Staff were friendly and helpful (especially since I'm gluten free which means lots of running back and forth to the kitchen to ask questions); the detail in the decor is endlessly fascinating; and every mouthful of food and beverage a delight.

my rule of thumb is 3 questions. Would you come back? Would you invite your friends? Would you stay for one more drink? Let me be honest. This isn't Michelin star standard. No matter. The answer to my questions: Yes, Yes and Yes; in that order. See you there..

The Vibe

“It’s like a piss-up in a greenhouse”, said the articulate young man by my side. PKD is a rather styled bar – Colonial adventure meets Victorian interiors via a stop off in industrial Shoredtich. It looks good, don’t get me wrong, it’s just real busy. Adjust to the entrance and move to the dining area and WOAH, it’s like some sort of wild conservatory on the Continent. Yes it’s fruity and full of trinkets, but the lighting, the relaxed crowd, the charming staff and the well picked out clutter make for a great, and long, date. It’s the sort of place you’d expect to find in Islington (Hoxley and Porter) or Soho, all dolled up and theatrical. I salute PKD for getting up each morning and applying a full face of make-up and every piece of jewellery in the box just to wander down the road for a pint of milk. Good for you, you’re making a real example of your dowdy neighbours.

The Order

You can either stay up at the front, going down the cocktail route with the Colonial Cocktail (Tanquery gin, maraschino liqueur and grapefruit juice) or the tequila Bloody Mary (yum); or head to the conservatory for a traditional dinner: rabbit and ham hock terrine, followed by an oven-roasted trout with fennel and spring onions and a side of chips. It’s good but rich food, not the place for a light bite – a few courses and at least one bottle of wine.

The Game

I wouldn’t recommend looking elsewhere for a pre-drink, just get there already. A date will work well if you decide to make it a long one, moving from bar to restaurant to bar to bed. Start with strong cocktails, ordering the most adventurous ones on the menu, providing initial conversation and playful sip swapping. Don’t finish them – you regretted picking such weird concoctions – and head to the table for dinner.

With this sort of candlelight you’ll be on the red wine and hearty fare. If possible, grab one of their four person tables on a quiet night and sit next to each other with the room as your stage. As you get progressively drunk, you’ll knock elbows, kick feet and gaze at each other longingly. Be bold and give them an endearing cheek kiss after the mains. Then share a dessert and cheekily suggest a few more drinks back at the bar. Two turn to four and before you know it you’re activating your Uber app with plans to take them back to your shared flat in Brixton. Enter the house quietly and head straight for the bedroom.

The Faults

PKD is probably the best thing about the area.

Sex Factor

4. It’s not a ‘swing by’ sorta place. Commit to everything at PKD.

Bottomless brunch was great and cheaper than nearby places, we were supposed to go someplace else actually but I'm glad it was booked! The food was delicious. As an American, I was thoroughly impressed by the pulled pork Benedict. The drinks came swiftly and the bottomless bloody Mary was delicious and freshly mixed. Kudos to the bartender and the serving staff!

Me and my partner popped in for a non alcoholic drink on our way home. Very very satisfied with our experience and a beautiful selection of alternatives to choose from. I had a ginger ale and my partner had a Mocktail. Very well presented and quality products. Huge selection of sauces, they were more than happy to provide for our order of chips!

Great cozy restaurant ticked away at the back of the bar. A good variety of tasty menu selections - game meat appetizer was unique and definitely worth a try.

Joe Public Pizza is always good, but the tater tots and wings were my highlight. Also incredibly tasty fries!? Loaded fries were too soggy and not crispy at the bottom.

Very nice restaurant, good food and variety of the menu. Quite spacious with different style as you enter and a different style at the back of the restaurant. Very nice to discover in the heart of Clapham.

Popped in to meet a friend and have a nibble - what a fab venue, great selection of ales, delicious food, easy atmosphere, great decor. The mussels, mmm, and the parmesan truffle triple cooked chips...perfect together!

Great looking, quirky bar with a decent selection of drinks and cocktails (pricey but not extortionate for London). Plenty of seating inside and out; didn't need to book in advance. There was live music on the evening we were there (Friday) which gave a good atmosphere - although maybe a bit loud for a romantic date if that is what you were looking for.
