Cozy small place with an outdoor area great for afternoon tea. Yummy bites with every afternoon tea formula and very affordable too, compared to other similar places in London.
Enjoyed a really good Sunday lunch here with friends and the mini me. Reservations were straight fwd through the website inc asking for a high chair.
Not a huge menu but something for everyone from fish to pork belly to veggie pasta. Breakfast as well through the day as well.
Service was attentive and plenty to take in with the surroundings.
£140 for 4 adults and one baby. Inc 1 bottle of red.
Wonderful place to have a nice catch up with friends and some delicious afternoon tea. Good service and well located. Would recommend it and I will go there again.
Londoners have travelled to Sloane Square for as long as I can remember. Peter Jones, that bastion of middle class essentials, sits on one corner, The Royal Court Theatre is opposite. Next door, the ill-fated Oriel Restaurant has been replaced by a very similar offering from The Colbert and just across the road is The Botanist. I’ve been starting or finishing shopping trips here ever since I first moved to London (thirty years ago). Not much has changed. The hipness of the Kings Road waxes and wanes, but Peter Jones is a stabilising influence on the whole area. We all come back – it’s the best place in London to buy moth balls and make-up, silver polish and shoes, posh tights and pretty dresses, cushions and new towels. All in one place.
It’s about time and it’s FINALLY happening – my new camera is on its way. Yes, I may have a snazzy looking and extra-large DSLR camera with a gigantic lens, but really it’s a little bit useless and so am I when using it. If the lights just right then the food will look fabulous, but if it’s not then it looks a little something like (I’ll leave that to your imagination). Actually the food here at Gallery Mess looked much better in real life than my photography shows – Angie Silverspoon however is turning into a bit of a pro and took some great snaps during our dinner. We were invited as part of a bloggers dinner, getting to know Gallery Mess a little better and finding out just what the Duke of York Square in Chelsea has to offer along with fellow foodies Mina, Frankie, Angie, Fiona, Suze, Catherine, Poppy & Julie.
Last week a fabulous group of my favourite bloggers and I headed down to The Gallery Mess at the Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea for dinner with Duke of York Square. It was a great evening full of loads of food and fun!. The Gallery Mess has been on my radar for a while as it's one of the few restaurants in London that allows large groups. I considered it for my birthday last year before deciding to go all out and just join forces with Diego instead. The restaurant is light and bright, with modern features, and the food is handled by London caterers, Rhubarb.
When I first started blogging I found it a little intimidating to turn up to events; it was that fear of not knowing anyone and standing awkwardly on your own. But over the last year and a half of blogging and attending events, I’ve got to know lots of fellow bloggers and I know I’ll see familiar faces and events will be relaxed and fun. As was the case when I attended a dinner at Gallery Mess organised by the PR and Marketing team behind Duke of York Square, a food and fashion courtyard in Chelsea. The evening began with champagne on the terrace of Gallery Mess and I chatted away to Mina as Fiona, Gary, Suze, Catherine, Frankie, Julie and Poppy soon arrived to join the party. I was meeting Julie for the first time but I’m a regular reader of her blog and always gain inspiration from the beautiful destinations that she’s travelled to and her gorgeous photography.I’d never been to the Gallery Mess before but I’ve visited Duke of York Square many times for shopping at places like Trilogy and L.K. Bennett and dining at Manicomio. A branch of Polpo has also recently opened there and I’m keen to try it as I loved the food at Polpo Soho. I also love the fine food market that takes place every Saturday, you can buy a glass of prosecco and wonder round the artisan food stalls trying sushi, oysters, cup cakes and sweets. It’s much calmer and less crowded than some of the bigger markets and a really nice way to break up a day of shopping. The Gallery Mess is located in the Saatchi Gallery but it’s definitely not your average museum restaurant, I walked through the bar, backed with a rainbow of different Pommery champagne bottles and into the chic, modern restaurant. The stylish dining room is mostly monochrome but exposed brick work, light pink blossoms and funky works of art add colour and character to the minimalist space. The food here is by Rhubarb, London’s leading caterer and event planners, I can certainly vouch for Rhubarb myself as I’ve use their services for several events and the food, service and organisation has always been spot on. In fact I’d be loathed to use any other company when organising catering for an event. Rhubarb are well known for their catering services but also provide the food for several prestigious locations such as the American Airways lounges at Heathrow, Bond and Brook at Fenwick, The Royal Albert Hall and the Sky Garden. With a menu of British dishes, I saw plenty of favourites so I stuck to the classic…But this was smoked salmon with a twist, it was cured with gin and tonic. I really enjoyed my boozy salmon and the dressing had a lovely zingy hint of raspberry too.My dining partners Suze and Catherine had both chosen the scallops and Suze and I did the old blogger plate swap to get a photo of each other’s dishes. I loved the look of these plump juicy scallops which definitely would have been my second choice for starter. When there’s a hashtag (collective noun for bloggers) of bloggers present, talk turns to the inevitable and discussion focussed on Instagram strategies, approaches to SEO and photography techniques. I wonder what ‘normal’ people would think of our conversation, I asked ;). Anyway, though the conversation was lively, I was still able to finish my perfectly cooked sea bass served with a simple crisp green salad. To my right, Julie enjoyed a a fillet steak, she’d requested it be rare and the preparation was just perfect for her. I also snapped Catherine’s lavender honey glazed duck breast served with fregola, fennel and peaches. As well as Suze’s pretty plate of pan-fried sea trout with crushed new potatoes, pickled samphire, broad beans and artichoke cream.Keeping things healthy, I finished the meal virtuous yet delicious bowl of fruit.Other tasty looking choices were chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream. And cherry and almond crumble with custard.
The Vibe
Oh it’s always fun to play at a little touch of sophistication isn’t it? Dinner with white table cloths and well-dressed waiters with pieces of modern art splashed all over the walls. Gallery Mess is next door to Saatchi Gallery in Chelsea’s Duke of York Square and the ideal date setting – especially for these warm summer evenings.
The Order
Going with the ‘Food is Art’ theme, the dishes here are dotted with edible flowers and delicate flavours. There’s an excellent set menu but you may not want to miss out on the Gin and Tonic cured salmon or the Grilled Poussin. There’s an impressive bar here and if you’re not tempted by their summery cocktails, it’s certainly an appropriate venue for a glass of champagne.
The Game
The dating gods have created a fool proof formula for you here. You’ve got a beautiful restaurant with plenty of talking points – there’s a giant sculpture of a shoe, people watching galore and artfully presented dishes. Go to the (free) gallery next door first and take things from there. If there’s potential, suggest a drink at Gallery Mess and if it’s all stations go then extend it to dinner. Ideal for evenings, the square becomes fairy lit as dusk falls. *Sigh*
The Faults
It’s Chelsea at its most Chelsea, possibly not for hipsters.

Excellent establishment, a fine place pre or post a gander around the Saatchi gallery. Staff is excellent, food is fab as are the drinks and coffee. Highly recommend.
Galeri Saatchi'nin hemen bitişiğindeki bu güzel mekanda kahvaltı ederseniz omleti öneririm. Sadece birşeyler içmek için de uğrayabilirsiniz. Güzel havada bahçesi çok keyifli oluyor. Kalabalık zamanlarda servis hayli aksıyor ama elemanların iyi niyetli çabaları nedeniyle hoş görülebiliyor.
Just love this place - one of my favourite places to eat in Chelsea. Had an artichoke, spinach, and parmesan pasta dish which was exquisite, and some beautiful buttered roasted carrots on the side. Cool decor, pleasant service, and a lovely bright space!
Every time I am in London I make it a “thing” to go to Saachi Gallery after having a quick bite at Gallery Mess. I’ve done a couple of times already. Sometimes I just sit for a cappuccino that is also delicious, other times I’ve sat outside with some friends, and another time I did some work inside while sipping wine. I love their French fries and their rosé wine selection. It’s hard to not get succumbed for one more glass while watching people coming and going from the Gallery next door.
This time around I had the pleasure to meet Mario, the manager of the place. We had a nice talk and my food was delicious.
They offer 10% discount for Saachi Gallery’s members.
The place is lovely, we had an afternoon tea (previously booked) and sandwiches, scones and other pastries were really nice. One waiter though... he was so unpleasant!
A smart restaurant alongside the Saatchi Gallery in London. It is advisable to book a table here. The menu is extensive and the stasf highly efficient. Delicious food produced really quickly.Next door is the prestigious Saatchi gallery which has various exhibitions throughout the year.
Very pleasant for coffee and drinks, inspiring artwork. Food is however rather average and overpriced.
Nice food. Fresh and tasty. Good wines. A bit posh but all round good value and friendly staff.
The Saatchi Gallery restaurant wouldn't usually be my first choice for lunch, but this Chelsea spot really can't be faulted. The menu had lots of summery choices and the portion sizes were just right. Needless to say the food was delicious - my spring pea risotto with lemon was pretty much perfect. The cocktails looked very lovely too, but I didn't try any.
Great food and excellent, if formal, service aside, Gallery Mess really doesn't take itself too seriously (take note of the giant shoe and neon pieces adorning the walls). The light from the terrace makes it a lovely spot for catching up with friends or colleagues. I only wish I could have stayed longer!
Really enjoyed the seafood sharing plate, especially the lovely smoked eel which was set and delicate. Accompanying artisan bread also at beautifully with the mackerel pate. Service could have been more sparkling, there was a somewhat disorganised air about the coordination of the serving staff that was rather a shame. Setting is light and airy but maintains an intimate feel and the art pieces are interesting and varied.
I am a local, so maybe I am bias....... But this place is sooooooo good! The Duke of York is no doubt a nice place to hang out. And next to the Saatchi gallery there is this Gallery Mess Restaurant that is not to be missed. Superb location, excellent view, stiff drinks 🤣🤣, good food and lovely International up-scale patrons. This establishment has obviously given this former military school a new life, and a more glamorous one! Service can be improved. But, hey, nobody is perfect, right?
Had the Wimbledon afternoon tea. A couple of the sandwiches were a bit dry but overall the tea and food were very nice. The staff were also nice and polite. Reasonably priced afternoon tea in a nice area. Would recommend.
