I think I’ve somehow managed to eat Italian food every day in the past week, and I could eat It all in the next too. My diet on the other hand, not going so well. We crossed the city this week to check out Diciannove. An Italian restaurant housed in the Crowne Plaza City hotel. The restaurant has been operating for many years and was once even under the instruction of Locatelli. Now it’s all kept in form from Locatelli’s second in command back then, Alessandro Bay.

I’ve been watching the redevelopment of Blackfriars station over the last few years as it has turned into a major transport hub. Fortuitously the reopened station is just across the road from Diciannove restaurant which sits on the ground floor of the Crowne Plaza hotel. The restaurant has a wine bar with a Chichetti menu but I have been invited to review the food offer in the long, elegant main body of the room. I’m interested in this place because head chef Alessandro Bay trained under Giorgio Locatelli for ten years and in a previous incarnation the space was Locatelli’s own restaurant Refettorio.

We’ve received news that Italian restaurant Diciannove (formerly Refettorio) is launching Menus Of Italy; a series of evenings celebrating the campanilismo (pride) of regional Italian cooking. The regional menus are designed by Head Chef Alessandro Bay who trained for ten years under Giorgio Locatelli before taking over in the restaurant when Locatelli moved on. The regional menus will be offered alongside the existing a la carte menu throughout the entire evening of the last Monday of each month and priced at £35 per person for three courses including a glass of Prosecco.

I have to say I really enjoyed the food here! I ordered monkfish in tomato and pepper sauce, and it was delicious. Their collection of beverages is great and over all ambience lovely. Service is very courteous as well.

We dined at Diciannove 19 at the Crown Plaza Hotel about a year ago and loved the experience. We tried a variety of cicchetti (Italian tapas) and home made pastas and enjoyed all our dishes as everything was absolutely delicious. The service was really fabulous as well. So it was with great expectation that we decided to visit Diciannove 19 again. You can read about that previous visit here.

The menu hasn’t changed much since our last visit other than the fact that Diciannove 19 are currently offering an exclusive white truffle menu created by Executive Chef Alessandro Bay. There is a starter, pasta and main dish, all accompanied by shavings of glorious white truffles from Umbria and which can be ordered a la carte.

To get things started we began our evening with the Il Supremo for 1-2 people (£17.50), the antipasta platter. This included fried calamari, fried zucchini, prosciutto Toscano ham, Finocchiona salami, Mortadella di Bologna, sausage, Parmegiano Reggiano cheese, mozzarella cheese and pickles. This was a great cross section of Italian nibbles that did much to whet our appetite. The meats were tasty, and there was a lovely crunchiness to the calamari and zucchini.

From the truffle menu, we ordered the uovo in padella con insalatina di radicchio (£24), pan-fried egg served with small chicory salad, corn bread crostino with truffle butter, parmesan and white truffle shavings. The eggs arrived (scrambled rather than pan-fried) with a mouthwatering scent of truffle, created by the topping of light shavings of white truffles. The eggs were delicious and were fluffy and cheesy. The corn bread crostino was very crusty, creating a nice contrast with the softness of the eggs as it offered up a delicious charred and buttery flavour. The chicory salad was a little bitter, but this was expected given that it was chicory.

Capesante su pure di broccoli – pan-fried scallops served with broccoli puree and toasted almonds (starter – £11.50) was pleasant but unremarkable. The scallops were plump, delicious and cooked well. But more could have been done with the accompaniments to enhance the flavour of this dish.

Tagliatelle al ragu with beef and pork ragout (starter – £10.75) was delicious and comforting and cooked exactly how a great ragu should be. It was rich, hearty, fully of body and flavour. It also had a touch of lovely rosemary running the sauce which gave it a great aroma. With the al dente pasta, this dish is highly recommended if you’re in the mood for some hearty home Italian cooking.

Spaghettini all’astice – fresh lobster, pigato, thyme and fresh tomato (starter – £12.75) was not as refined and slick as our previous experience of this dish. It was tasty enough, but the sauce was slightly too sweet and hadn’t quite struck the right flavour profile.

Raviolo di ricotta al parmigiano (£33) – ravioli filled with ricotta cheese and parmesan was served with butter, sage and white truffle. The ravioli pasta was cooked al dente, but the filling was slightly grainy in texture and it was difficult to detect the parmesan in the filling. However, the butter and sage sauce topped with white truffles was wonderful and left you wanting more.

To finish our meal, we chose the homemade gelato (£6.00) with a scoop each of vanilla, hazelnut and chocolate gelato and accompanied by some amarena cherries on the side. The gelato was wonderfully creamy and was a delicious way to end our night.

The food at Diciannove 19 was decent, but the cooking didn’t quite offer up the same refined and elevated experience as our previous visit. Some dishes were well executed but we also found errors in others. With some tweaking, we know Diciannove 19 has the potential to be as wonderful as before. Again, the service was steady and assured.

Food rating: 3.5/5
Service rating: 3.5/5
Prices: About £23 to £46 for three courses, excludes drinks and service.
From the truffle menu – the starter is £24, the pasta is £33 and the main is £46

http://culinaryworldtour.com/ < Food, travel, reflections and the odd jostle.

Having been recently renovated and re-launched to a vey high standard, Diciannove is a real hit and well worth a visit for anybody who is serious about fresh, wholesome Italian food. I recently visited with a guest from Toronto who enjoyed the experience wholeheartedly.

Rather than seeking to wolf a meal down in two courses, we opted to share a range of smaller dishes. After a round of delicious freshly baked breads and infused oils came thinly rolled classic Neapolitan style of pizzette, light and pleasing for the palate, with a sauce that belied the freshness of ingredients.

Then came ravioli filled with roasted Luganica sausage, a scattering of toasted pine nuts and sage, another hit with the slight smokiness of Northern Italian sausage, softened by mellow fruity olive oil.

Very good Italian restaurant in the city with fresh ingredients. The chef takes inspiration from different areas of Italy and the menu mentions where each dish comes from. I had the 'Octopus salad, new potatoes, olives, lemon dressing and chilli oil from Liguria. My companion had the Sardines salad with cucumber, tomato and capers on toasted bread from Sardegna. For the mains we had Char-grilled swordfish, rocket and cherry tomatoes salad from Sicilla and Ossobuco with gremolata, the daily special from Milan. Look forward to returning soon as Diciannove do a 2 course lunch or dinner with espresso for £19.50

Great Italian restaurant inside the Crown Plazza hotel right near Blackfriars train and tube station. The staff was very friendly and polite. The pasta was great and delicious. A little on the pricey side but the restaurant and hotel are high end. To setting is a bit formal but would go again and recommend.

Restaurant located inside the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Blackfriars, opposite the train/tube station. Don't be fooled by the size or decor of the restaurant, the food is incredible. Went on a business lunch and everyone commented on how nice the meals were, excellent flavours and well prepared. The staff were equally welcoming. I would definitely recommend for a lunch/dinner around the area

Food was excellent, great red snapper and the London Gelato ice cream was truly beautiful. Wife and I sat across one of the larger tables by the window. Wide table so we were miles apart, felt a bit odd. Good service, nice ambience, but not exactly cheap.

I really enjoying dining at this restaurant. It was previously known as Refettorio, but it's now known as Diciannove. The food quality is exceptional as always and the last time I went, I was informed that it would be closed temporarily for refurbishments. I do think this is needed as the interior can look quite dark. That said the ambience is always good and a renovation can only improve on what is already a pretty good place to dine Italian.

I visited The Crowne Plaza Hotel for a business lunch. They have the Chinese Cricket Club restaurant in the same building but this time I wanted to give the Italian a go. Very easy to book, I used an online engine - they then confirmed the booking by phone later in the morning. The entrance is quite impressive, up some steps from the street. On the right is the Italian. We were met at the desk and asked if we wanted to leave our coats. Then, shown to our table. The restaurant was bright and airy with views of blackfriars. We had some bread and olives to share as a starter and went straight into main courses. I ordered the tagliatelle - posh spag bol. It was a good size and delicious. Others ordered a cod, or pork roulade or pizza. Everyone was happy with their choices - thankfully no food envy this time. Dessert wise, I ordered the mini puff pastry - very good, thick cream along with fruits. And then an espresso afterwards - which i thought was expensive at £4. We had an offer which meant a saving of 50% (try searching for Gourmet Society Dining Card on Google). Overall, I'd recommend visiting Crowne Plaza - there is also a lovely bar called Volteur, along with the option of afternoon tea with lovely cakes in the lounge.
