The Anchor and hope is a very nice place for dinner. The shrimp I chose was delicious. Cooked just as needed with a great smell. The staff is welcoming and very helpful. Recommended when in London 👍

We popped in for a quick drink before a visit to the Tate Modern and dinner at another restaurant- when we arrived at the other restaurant we decided none of the mains looked particularly good so quickly paid the bill for our drinks and nibbles then made a bee-line back to the Anchor and Hope.

It was already busy earlier in the evening and was still turning over a roaring trade when we returned around 830ish. We settled in with a drink before being seated about 20 minutes later- not a bad wait all things considered and the staff were very good about letting us know when the table would be ready.

We ordered the lamb's neck with dauphinois, vegetables, and salad for two, pluse a carafe of the house red. The portion is huge- there's a lot of meat on those necks, the potatoes are ridiculously rich and well the salad was just unnecessary. This was perhaps not the best move for 2 people who had downed a couple of drinks and nibbles already... our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs on this occasion so we perhaps didn't enjoy it as much as we should have.

But we will be back because there were a lot of things on the menu that appealed and it's got a wonderfully buzzy atmosphere!

Very different and interesting, but a bit expensive and rushed experience. Had an interesting scallops with lentils and bacon dish, partner had the beef provencale. Shared the flourless choc cake which was delicious and had beer/pimms each. Bill came to £50 for two on a Thursday night. It might have been just us, we were going to theatre so had about 50min to eat, but the place was very full and we felt a little rushed to order...though food arrived in literally minutes. Very friendly staff, I thought the place itself wasn't anything special, interesting that they only have 2(!) two-people tables, rest of us are on tables with other people, which I'm fine with. Has outdoor seating and bar area, 10min walk from Waterloo, near The Old and Young VIc. Might go back another time to try something different. Also, note they don't take bookings except Sunday I think.

My favourite place to eat in London. This is definitely the place to go to if you are in search of delicious gastro pub food. It is a fantastic venue for long lunches with a group of friends and is perfect in both summer and winter. The chefs really know what they're doing and the food is always fresh and seasonal, but I must add, it is not your stereotypical pub grub. When I land at Heathrow next, The Anchor & Hope will be at the top of my 'must do' list. Overall, a relaxed atmosphere, friendly service and amazing food.

What gastropubs are meant to be - fresh, innovative food, cracking beer (& good wine list to boot) and attentive, knowledgeable service. A gem. Deserves the great reviews it's had elsewhere.

Rillettes and Stew. Had the rabbit rillettes and the Lamb's neck stew with scalloped potatoes. Cost us an arm and a leg, but it warmed us up, and made us insanely happy on a very dreary and cold November night.

Arrive early, good lunch. Luckily we arrived early for lunch and easily got a table, the place filled up very quickly. Really enjoyed the lunch, very nicely done. Although my clothes smelled like a deep fryer after leaving, not sure what that's about (??) hopefully just a one-off, because I enjoyed the place and would like to go back.

Relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Good food. But aim for an early dinner as waiting for a table can be a bore.

Manages too be both vibrant and charming. Despite the fact that they don't take reservations for dinner, so you either turn up early or settle in for a 2 hour wait for your table, I think this is one of the very best gastro pubs in town. The floor manager has the most amazing memory! although the same can not be said for all the waiters!

A London favourite. If you were rude enough to put a gun to my head and say "you're only allowed to go to one restaurant for the rest of your life" then this would probably be it. Informal, well cooked food served by lively, knowledgeable staff. OK, it's a bit cramped, ok the table might wobble, but maybe I like a bit of rough in a bustling atmosphere over clean, well-defined lines and white tableclothes in an atmosphere where you can hear a pin drop.

Must-haves? Beetroot, horseradish and watercress salad to start, lamb shoulder for 5-ish with life-shortening pommes dauphinoises and the praline ice-cream. And waddle out. They also do a mean cassoulet. One or two staples remain throughout but other things on the menu are seasonal - see leg of kid and courgettes with mint, for example.

Get there for 6pm and get your name down. If you feel as though you have to book to eat, pop over 32 Great Queen Street for similar fayre.

We chanced it for a lunch here with our little baby - the anchor and hope made us feel like real adults again! We had grouse lasagna and a big pork chop, simple greens and good bread and butter with a glass of wine. You could tell the food was made with love - delicious, saucy, comforting on a cool autumn day, no pretensions but still elevated and elegant. Our daughter slept long enough for us to eat uninterrupted and she loved meeting the kind chefs too! Thanks so much for a perfect lunch ❤️

The food we had on the day was a slightly salty. Nevertheless was not bad. I expected a little bit more preparation on the parma ham and melon starter though.

Warm, efficient welcome. Great service, splendidly yummy food. We ate light but soooo much to like on the menu I’ll just have to come back and try it!

Very good gastropub on The Cut not far from Southwark tube station. Three cask beers on handpump when I last visited. A few tables outside some of them covered. On the latest visit, I was popping in for a quick pint before seeing a play at the Young Vic which is a few yards away. But the pub is primarily noted for its food offering.

Great evening to celebrate a birthday ! They’re dog friendly and the staff are super patient .. you wouldn’t think so but they do a mean negroni !! Good wine list and great cocktails they def know their drinks ! Food wise it’s question of getting what you want quickly because it does go ! Not super extensive on the vegetarian front but what they have is mighty good and generous !! They’re happy to bring all in one go especially as we all wanted to try reach others dishes ! So very amenable!! All in all I definitely recommend for an evening out .. shame they didn’t do a little birthday treat but I guess it would have been de trop .?

Nice place, best to book ahead probably, only one table suitable for a group of three not already booked when I got there at 5pm on Wednesday. Food was tasty, good quality, nice selection of interesting food. Service was good overall, if a bit 'gruff'. We shared the seven hour lamb neck, simple & tasty

You may think this is a pub, but it doesn't have the typical pub optionsand you will be impressed with the food, amazing wine list and great service. It is conveniently located under 10 minutes walk from Waterloo Station. This is the perfect place to meet people that live around London and enjoy amazing food. I highly recommend the lamb neck. And all the desserts were great as well.

Haven’t been since before lockdown, but the food is as good as I remember with the added bonus of now being able to make reservations. Special mention for the Dover sole
