Reviews of Il Mascalzone

A super authentic Italian in Putney. A vast and varied menu with all the Italian specialities great ambience and excellent service. A good simple wine list of Italian and world wines. They don't hurry you take your time enjoy at your pace and leisure. The pizzas are all cooked fresh right in front of you. The veal and all the spaghetti and pasta dishes are delicious.

The restaurant is located along the Putney high street, which is now a quiet area. It's a short walk away from the Putney train station, and nearby is the beautiful Putney Bridge. The staff were incredibly friendly, with lots of smiles. We were seated near to the open window and not far from the families that were eating. Inside are some beautiful display cabinets with bottles of wine, alcohol, and sports t-shirts. The food was affordable and competitive with London prices, which is a bargain considering how good the food is. I enjoyed the Penne Arrabiata alongside a cold can of coke. The portion size was great, and I started eating before I took my photo. Ooops! The ingredients tasted fresh, which for me is the most important part of Italian food. We were offered grated parmigiano cheese, but I am vegan and did not try this. The dessert menu includes lots of delicious sounding options, but we chose not to have one on this occasion. Instead, we paid for our bill and headed out for a walk around the local area. Overall it's a great restaurant serving up some of the best Italian food in Putney. Considering how easy it was to get there from Northwest London - I'll be sure to check it out again.

Delicious food. Had the stewed lamb with pasta and a rosemary/tomato sauce. My dad had the lamb cutlets which he said were gorgeous. All the staff were super friendly. Super efficient. Downgraded 5 to 4 stars just on the basis of tip should be at your own discretion...I don't like it added as table service. Will be sure to return. great restaurant! Left very happy

I am a loyal customer to the Il Mascalzone and I love the food but I wanna mention something extra, in my office we had a birthday celebration and we wanted to have Italian food so I've suggest to get the food from Il mascalzone, I've ordered to the guys the evening before, pizzas and pastas for 13 people. We collect the food at lunch time and everything was ready for us done with accuracy and the food was simply great. I wanna highly recommend this Restaurant and the staff it's outstanding! Well done Guys

Italian at its best. Superb food and wine. I have tried many Italian restaurants but this one is the best in terms of good wholesome food without gimmicks! From Pizzas, Risottos, Fish or meat you will not be disappointed. Service is very good despite it being busy all the time. I will be here whenever I wish to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries or just have a good time. The manager David is knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The Fish, and Chicken were exceptional.

A well decorated Italian with friendly and attentive service but, I have to say, terribly overpriced. Good pizza but not great. Nowhere near the well baked pizza you can get up at Al Forno down the road. They charge you for beer & lemonade when you order a shandy (and that is an abomination). <br/>It's good, not great and very over priced.

Been here a few times and it is always busy so worth reserving a table. Only ever had a pizza here but they have a good variety and really tasty. Their chocolate soufle with vanilla ice cream was delicious. Staff are friendly. The restaurant gets very warm and soon I wanted to leave to get fresh air. But a nice restaurant.

Disgraceful experience - contemptuous staff. Il Malcazone – over the road from the cinema, Putney High Street. We’ve been here many a time over the years, avoiding the back with the TV screen and the very rowdy times, and had pleasant enough (and far too large) meals. Things have been going downhill over the last couple of years, pasta getting drier, inedible, old meatballs which the staff just shrugged their shoulders about when I complained, service getting slower, but we’ve stuck with it because we only visit occasionally. Should have read the most recent Google comments about the staff and especially the manager before we went yesterday for lunch – they are not flattering. We asked for chips as a starter to munch between us, and stressed NO salt. Carbonara and Hawaiian pizza ordered. Asked for extra sauce on carbonara as last one had been very, very dry. <br/><br/>Chips arrived same time as mains, covered in salt which brought on a huge coughing fit had to call the waiter. Told him we’d ordered no salt, he straightaway picked up a cellar and tried to pour more on, another waiter had to intervene and take them away. Hawaiian good, pizzas generally are. I had the carbonara, a huge mound of almost dry spaghetti, even the fork wouldn't lie down in it. I couldn’t get down more than a small amount, too dry to swallow. Too disappointed and annoyed to complain on this occasion, just left it, and it sat on the table for 20 minutes while other half continued his pizza. When he’d left the table to go to the bathroom, the manager approached and asked, "What's the problem with the carbonara?" in a pretty aggressive tone. I explained it was dry despite my request for more sauce, and inedible. He didn't speak, just removed it. <br/><br/>Two minutes later an embarrassed waiter brought the cold, congealed mess back to us in a takeaway box, saying the manager had told him to. We couldn’t believe it. Other half refused to pay, and demanded it be removed from the bill. We paid for the rest and were walking out when I noticed the manager. I politely challenged him about the takeaway but suddenly, after speaking perfect English for decades, he couldn't speak more than odd words. He said the takeaway was Steven’s dinner (pizza, which he’d consumed). Then he said we’d asked for it (of course we hadn’t). Then he said he’d thrown my old dinner in the bin. Then he said yes, it was the mess I’d sent back, returned to me to take home. We both told him he should be thoroughly ashamed of himself for his disrespect towards paying customers. We will never, ever go back there again. I’ve added my disgust to the Google comments about that restaurant (can’t confirm how filthy the kitchens are, as others have commented on, I haven’t seen those), but this contempt on his part was completely unforgiveable.

Never AGAIN. I have eaten here a number of times and the Service has got worse and worse. I can't complain about the food but the waiters and manager I would recomend taking a customer service course !!<br/>No baby changing Facilities and the disable toliet stank of ciggerate smoke.The kitchen upstairs is disgusting and flirthy I'm glad I ordered a pizza which was cooked downstairs.Price is higher than normal and service charge is a joke.Would not recomend here......

Love this place for the service the food and price! To my mother in law to celebrate her birthday for the second year running (this time at her request) and for once ordered some pasta which was lovely if not a little to oily fir my tastes was informed by my partner that this was the Italian way, my daughter tried to beat her record of attempting to eat a entire pizza (she always has 2 slices left) but managed to be left with only one slice! my 2year old stuggled with their over generous 'half portion' of pasta with my partner gleefully rubbing his hands as this would become a 'light snack' later on! The staff are attentive but leave you alone. The entire tables food all arrived at the same time (5 adults and 2 children) even with us ordering differently, ( 3 different pizzas, 2 different pastas and lamb) the discreetly dealt with the cake (brought by my) made a big show - complete with cd- wishing a happy birthday and promptly whisked away with the cake returning with it cut up on plates with forks for all- only complaint there is that they distributed the entire cake between the 6 of us which resulted in some hefty slices! All in all a good time was enjoyed by all again!

Mascalzone used to be great... Then it became popular and has really lost its spark. Chairs and tables are crammed into every available space leaving diners squashed and with no privacy. The food and service weren't up to scratch either. I get the feeling that they're trying to cram as many people into the restaurant as possible and it leads to a disappointing experience.
