Rudies was recommended to us by friends who visited & loved the place , have to say we felt the same excellent service , food & ambiance , it’s cosy and the portions were really good , we had the curry goat and rice , & sides all lively , however the rum cake & ice cream is my fav , we shared it but next time I’ll Order my own as it’s real small , I’d go back in a heartbeat brilliant night amazing food and great friendly staff and owners

Rudie’s Jamaican restaurant in Dalston has been a great success, cooking genuine food from the island and serving up killer rum and other cocktails. The good news is that Rudie’s has just opened another location to give the good folk in the City of London access to their unique flavours. The new outlet is in the Shoreditch Boxpark, a stroll from Bishopsgate. This innovative concept uses re-purposed shipping containers to create spaces for food, fashion and art businesses. It’s chic, stylish and well placed in this buzzing design quarter.

A few weeks back I was invited to Rudie’s to try out their new Sunday roast menu and boy was I in for a treat! Just the décor alone will make you feel as if you have been transported to Jamaica. With posters of official street parties, carnivals and upcoming events in Jamaica placed on the walls and a selection of the finest Jamaican rums at the bar.

Although I was there to try out their Sunday roast, Rudie’s have a huge selection of choice on their menu. From small plates to plantain bowls jerk chicken, seafood, and yard classics.

For starters, I ordered the crispy calamari, which is deep fried in seasoned polenta. I was expecting the calamari to have a hint of spice to it, as I was in a Jamaican restaurant, but it was neutral. TIP: Squeezing the lemon all over the Calamari brings out the flavour.
I wanted to try out some of the smaller plates as starters, to taste what else Rudie’s serve beside their Sunday roast. I also choose the pulled pork balls, which are spicy deep fried jerk pork balls, served with a spicy mayo. Now, this had spice! The pulled pork is shredded inside and is full of smoked jerk flavour. The spicy mayo adds as a great accompaniment and found myself smothering the balls with this sauce.

Sunday roast
The Sunday roast is served with whole chicken crispy roast yams, squash, sweet corns, bakes and rum gravy, which is a traditional Jamaican style roast. Rudie’s roast is perfect for sharing between two people. The chicken is marinated in authentic Jerk rub, where the chef places the herbs underneath the skin to boost the flavour.
TIP: I loved drenching my chicken roast in the rum gravy for extra flavour.
For me, the bakes were my favourite and tasted better when they were soaked in the gravy. The roast left me very fulfilled and satisfied as it was undoubtedly filling. I would suggest sharing between two to three people, as the portions are large, and add rice and peas to the roast, as it is an accompaniment. I was a little disappointed that the roast was not jerked but upon speaking to the chef Vernon Samuels. He explained that Rudie’s serve many Jerk style dishes and they wanted to offer a plain roast with a hint of Jamaican influence.

Samuel’s gave me a tour of Rudie’s authentic drums where they make the Jerk chicken and explained how Rudie’s smoke their Jerk dishes, giving their poultry a genuine jerk taste. I was able to sample some of their Jamaican jerk chicken, which is cooked to perfection and is a reminder of authentic Jamaican cuisine.

Now, what is a Jamaican restaurant if rum is not involved? Be prepared as Rudie’s have a fine selection of Rum and Rum cocktails. My cocktail of choice was Jamaica Nice, which is a fruity boozy smoothie, which consists of Almond syrup, lime, nectarine, pineapple, Appleton rum and coconut rum. Sitting at the window, with the sun shining on my eyes, and beating down on my skin, I was imagining that I had been swept away to the Jamaica for that moment, as the cocktail taste like your on holiday in the islands. This cocktail is sweet!

I don’t go out for Jamaican or Caribbean food all that often in London. It’s not because I don’t love the cuisine but because (save for a short list of awesome places) I tend to find most of what’s on offer doesn’t live up to my expectations of how good the food can be. So I’m pleased to report my recent dinner at Rudie’s in Dalston turned out to be such a tasty treat.

On a Monday I went down to sample a new jerk chicken joint in Dalston. Two days after my superb fried chicken meal at Chick ‘n’ Sours might have been overkill but I figured the two types of cuisine were different enough that I wouldn’t suffer chicken fatigue.

Just to make sure, we started with some fried calamari with a coriander and lime dip. Oh my. I would say these were the best calamari I have had.

The last time I ate Jerk chicken was back in 2011 on our trip to Jamaica. My dad convinced a local lad, he met on the beach, to show us the country. He accepted and drove us in his own car too some of the most stunning locations. Most of these were unknown to tourist and favourites with the locals. Looking back at it, my dad took a great risk with his two young daughters, but these are still some of my most cherished memories.

Having been cited as having ' The Best Jerk Chicken in London', when I was invited for dinner at Rudies, a family run Jamaican in the heart of Dalston, I naturally had high expectations. Luckily, the engaging waiters giving excellent service, great home cooked food, and lively yet chilled surroundings, certainly didn't disappoint!

week it’s Jamaican food at Rudie’s. Jamaica is very well-represented here in. London, so it was actually hard to pick a place to go to. Too much choice. However, when Emerald Street wrote about the zingy cocktails at Rudie’s, the. choice was a lot easier. I’d booked ahead just to be on the safe side, although it

We went on the first night of the fully booked soft launch.  I like opening nights because the staff and proprietors are so happy and excited to be open.  Warm and friendly service.

Food was a little uneven, but hit the mark where it counted.  We shared an order of patties to start.  My companion had a small jerk chicken and I had the medium jerk pork shoulder.  We got one each of the salads.  My companion could order the mango, avocado and cucumber sans coriander.  I had the red coleslaw with coriander.  For starch we had one order of rice and beans as well as corn on the cob.

The patties were tasty but unpleasantly tough having been fried to a deep mahogany color.  I wouldn't order them again.

Jerk chicken was indeed a small portion but fantastically moist, tender and smokey.  All the jerk dishes are cooked over charcoal.  The medium hot  jerk ketchup was a pleasant accompaniment.  My medium sized pork was enormous and I ended up taking home half of it in a takeaway box.   Very good, with a lovely charred crispy skin.  The hottest sauce they do (banana pepper) didn't register very hot to my palate but it was tasty and I liked the fact that it wasn't sweet.  I could have done with a larger serving of sauce, actually.

Both salads were great.  The mango avocado salad also contained thin slivers of red onion and baby spinach.  Nice balance of flavors even without the coriander.  I loved the red cabbage and coriander slaw.  Quite light and fresh, being made with vinaigrette instead of mayonnaise.

We were a bit let down by our starchy sides.  My companion's rice and beans were a bit dull.  Incidently, the best rice and beans I have had in East London was at Barrio East on Shoreditch High Street, where they are cooked in good chicken stock.  My grilled corn on the cob was slightly underdone.

Quaffable house red was £18 for a bottle.

Great food, but quite a small venue. We experienced a few issues with the menu as it was a large party and we were expected to order the set menu without being informed when booking. It was resolved eventually but it seems the service suffered a little.

My first visit, but I definitely will return, cool venue, so diverse! There were groups of friends, couples holding hands, couples from the LGBT community, all races, a truly beautiful scene all with sweet food and great music. I had the set menu, which was totally delicious. Cant wait to return.

Very tasty authentic Caribbean dishes with a twist. Jerk chicken roti and ebony wings recommended! Music selection is a mix of soca and reggae tunes. Slightly on the costly side but would visit again!
