I'd say that after being in so many different places, bars and cities. #Threeeightfour is the coolest one I've ever been to. I can't remember other one with the same level of originality, not at all. Just gathering together dishes from everywhere into the same food menu, the freshness of its decoration and the innovation of its own cocktail menu.. Basically a lovely place in Brixton, may say one of the best ones in southern London ;)

Visited onrecommendation of a friend and wasnt disappointed. Tried a few of the cocktails (theyd just launched a new menu that day), really loved the Paloma and the ziggy stadust (picture). Great snacks with the cocktails, olives, fritters and chimichurri steak. Will be back!

Came here for drinks on a Saturday night. The place was buzzing! Great crowd. Nice atmosphere and decorations. Cocktails were delicious. We ended up ordering some food as well which was great - so many things on the menu looked delicious. Overall everyone very relaxed.

The Vibe

The demise of the hipster, hailed in the Guardian last month, has not been much mourned in South London. Why aspire to the specious counter-culture of Shoreditch when you can enjoy the genuine multi-culture of Brixton? The market still bustles despite Tesco’s invasion. The Ritzy still glows. And drugs still flow on street corners from people who look like they need the money – not the armoured vehicles of Hackney dealers, who don’t.

Yet a graveyard for hipsters, South London has become. Here, bearded types are settling to die – or at least grow up – priced out of Hoxton or exhausted from cycling to and from Homerton. Where, oh where can these watered down wastrels find girlfriends to spur on the transition to maturity?

Enter Three Eight Four, a new cocktail bar with exposed brick walls, distressed unisex loos kitted out with self-consciously retro hand-dryers, presumably imported from East London. Small and local (the premises used to purvey horse meat before the supermarkets took that over), the place has a pulse that positions it perfectly as the scene of a first date with a one-time scenester.

The Order

Cocktails frothing with egg-white. Four in the Pink, an unholy Trinity of Campari, Amaretto and Cointreau, topped with a Love Heart to articulate the adoration that will consume you upon first sip. Three Eight Four‘s small plates of food ensure the drink will go your head while supplying something to chew on if the conversation’s found wanting. Sweet potato chips (£2.25) are at the top of their class. Salt and pepper squid with aioli (£6) is plentiful and perfect.

The Game

Go! Eat, drink, be merry and, if you’re still standing at 11pm, hit the Effra Social, opposite, for its Dance Hall or hop on a bus to Peckham or New Cross to crash an art student’s house party.

The Faults

Negligible. An egregious rectangular plate briefly offended an otherwise faultless aesthetic.

Sex Factor

4. How to deny the dying breath of a hipster past his prime?

Our third stop on Coldharbour Lane (efficient eh?) was Three Eight Four, a small plates restaurant and cocktail bar from those clever folk at Seven.

Seven has made it on to Matt The List an unprecedented three times, as almost every Brixton trip seems to involve a couple of their fantastic £5 cocktails, so expectations were high for Three Eight Four. The fact that the bar was at full capacity when we arrived only added to the anticipation.

Thankfully, a large group soon left and we crammed in at the bar. They won me over instantly with their well-lit bar surface, how novel to be able to read the menu and actually see your drink. It's a good-looking place in general, which is no surprise given Seven's funky décor.

Cocktails are competitively priced at £6-£7.50 a pop, except for the rather special Mr.Flambastic at £8.75 - Blackwell's dark & Red Leg spiced rums mixed with Cointreau, shaken with flambéed peaches in Gran Capataz brandy, theatrically created at the end of the bar.

I went straight for a Smoked Manhattan - Pikeseville Rye with Punt e Mes, Luxardo Maraschino, stirred & smoked on the spot to great effect. I wasn't so taken with the Negroni Sbagliato - Campari & Punt e Mes, stirred & topped with sparkling red wine. Very much an acquired taste, aggressively bitter and almost medicinal.

Caroline chose well with Bombay Kitchen - Opihr Indian spiced gin & Koko Kanu rum, coriander, mint, tabasco & mango juice, with a side of papadum & chutney. It arrived in a cezve, a pot usually used to make Turkish coffee. There was just the right amount of tabasco, and the normally dominant cardamom heavy Opihr played well with others.

Last but not least was Tart'n Tide - Auchentoshan lowland whisky, stirred w/ Licor 43, Cointreau, lemon & honey, over a seaweed infused ice ball. We ordered two of these which came out rather different to one another, perhaps an extra splash of Licor 43 found its way into one of them, but both were very enjoyable. Don't let the seaweed put you off, order this if you like a boozy whisky cocktail.

They've created an interesting little menu and there were some real winners in there, and at £7 they represent great value, though not quite enough to knock Seven off its perch as my favourite Brixton bar. Classic cocktails are also available, alongside well-chosen wines and beers, and some old school American soft drinks (e.g. Dr Pepper Vanilla Float, Dad's Root Beer).

The food will have to wait for another time, but I'm sure you won't go far wrong with the likes of reuben sliders, slow-cooked beef brisket, 'nduja with ricotta on bread, and pear & pecorino salad.

Such a great vibe in this bar, perfect for a couple/smaller groups. The music, service, ambience and lighting are spot on. Huge array of cocktails, impressive range of non-alcoholic drinks too. Would love to come back and try the food.

Such a fantastic little spot. (There is some outdoor seating and a downstairs section, so maybe not so little). The food is FANTASTIC!!! Very aesthetically pleasing. The Bavette steak was super flavorful and I started with this grape/pear/orange salads that gave EVERYTHING!! It had hints of sweet and bitter and earthy backed with a mustard vinaigrette that really brought everything together! The salad was quite large. Definitely enough for two. I had to try the pork collar tacos and those were delicious. Pomegranate seeds added a nice crunch and some sweetness. I finished with the Confit potatoes which were oh so flavorful and crispy. The drinks list is extensive. I started with a local beer since I didn’t plan on drinking. After watching the bartenders make several drinks, I caged for an amazing mojito. 10/10 highly recommended. Navish and Bailey were fantastic hosts!

Very pleasantly surprised by the food here. It's an unassuming venue, but very very nice. The service is quick and friendly and the food really was delicious. Cocktails were very good too, and there was a huge variety.

This place has been on my list for ages. So glad I had the chance to visit on a Random Friday a few weeks ago. I have wanted to visit before but it always looks so busy however this time we decided to give it a go. Sam greeted us and was so accommodating. 10/10 for Sam. He showed us the downstairs space however we opted for a table upstairs. Sam was quite knowledgeable on the wines which was really helpful and I loved his recommendation. I also had a French Martin which I loved. I really love the intimate cosy atmosphere and the warm and welcoming staff so shout out to Sam and Hudson. I can’t wait to return and try the food!!

Unreal cocktails. I’m not sure the last time I saw a cocktail list with over 100 cocktails. All amazing! My favorite was the pisco sour. Food wise, we ordered a lot more but I didn’t get pics of it all. Absolutely loved the chicken wings, the mushrooms and arancini balls. Flatbread was good but I prefer it with a dip. We did end up ordering the houmous however we ate most of the flatbread by the time it came. Would have loved more scallops as it comes with 3. As we were 5, we shared them by splitting in half so as you can imagine it was hard to get a good bite. The desserts were both incredible. Highly recommend. Food and cocktails came out a bit slow. Still would return. Really lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Tables are too small though and servers seemed to struggle with this each time they brought a dish. I think a few dishes could have had smaller plates to help this a bit.

Went there for the first time recently for some cocktails. The list of cocktails is so extensive that you'll definitely find something you like. Also really, really well-priced drinks!

The cocktails are top notch. My go to is the whiskey sour or the Moscow Mule!! All time favourites. However, food could use larger portions I understand that those are tapas and supposed to be bites, but might as well be proportionate to the price range. Service is great, the staff is helpful and super friendly. Would definitely recommend this place if you find yourself around Brixton

All I can say is wow. Many people have told me that I must visit this place, as they potentially do the best spicy margarita. We finally gave it a try, and I was not disappointed. I can only speak on that one particular drink though, as that was all I had from there. Besides that, the customer service was great. The gentleman that served us was very chatty and made us feel at home. Definitely worth the price point too!
