I know many times most of us avoid hotel restaurants because we don’t believe they offer good value for money. But as I’ve realised in the last few years after spending a lot of my time in hotels sometimes we get good surprises. Hide and Seed is part of a boutique hotel in a quiet area of Putney. My plan for the day was to start with a good lunch and then go for a walk along the river.

Just 5 minutes walk from East Putney station on the District line, or 15 minutes from Putney High Street, Hide and Seed is part of Lodge Hotel. The restaurant itself is situated on the ground floor, just off of the lobby. The elegant dining room has a relaxed library style and a wall of black and white sporting photos, all very modern (if a little dark).

Whilst perusing the menu I ordered a cocktail from the bar. I'd like to say that it had bourbon, raspberry and prosecco in, but since I've got the memory of a goldfish and there's no trace of their cocktail list online, I can't say for certain. The drinks list is quite substantial in terms of the bar's own cocktails and some classics.

We opted to get stuck into the mains straight away and both went for burgers. For boy, the hide burger (£14.50) and for me the seed burger (£12.50). Boy's hide burger was an 8oz patty with homemade BBQ sauce and a brioche bun. I managed to steal a few bites! It was cooked perfectly medium with a good balance of BBQ sauce. There was no doubt that this patty was freshly made and hand formed.

In attempt to try something different (I love my beef burgers) I opted for the veggie equivalent. The 'burger' itself was a little disappointing; breaded potato, carrots and peas. But the toppings made up for it. The burger was covered in a generous serving of melted cheese and the bun loaded up with some fresh leaves, avocado slices, onion and gherkins. There was some of their homemade BBQ sauce but I feel it could have done with something a little punchier, like a chilli jam. Not necessarily a bad thing, but when I say the bun was loaded with extras, it really was. This is the first burger I've ever eaten with a knife and fork, far too messy to pick up. Perhaps the bun could have been bigger to allow for the generous amount of toppings?

Onto dessert, we both had our eye on the same thing; chocolate textures (£7.50). But, in the name of trying something different, I ordered the Pink Panther cake (£7.50) for myself.

Boy's chocolate textures was served on a small slate tile, scattered with a few different components: layered chocolate mouse, a chocolate profiterole and chocolate crumbs and was decorated with fruit and chocolate work. Again, I stole a little try. The mousse was a good balance of light and rich between the layers and the presentation was great.

I have mixed feelings about my Pink Panther cake. Again, the presentation was outstanding. There was plenty of fresh fruit, a dribble of coulis, some shortbread crumbs, a scoop of homemade ice cream and even some spun sugar. The cake it self was a gorgeous looking 3 layer sponge, sandwiched between fresh cream and had a pink frosting topping. The sponge itself perhaps wasn't as light and fluffy as it could have been and the pink frosting was a little too sweet. Having said that, there wasn't too much of the frosting and the ice cream helped.

We visited late in the afternoon, 5pm, and it was completely empty. I'd have expected a few people to be at least seated for Friday afternoon drinks, but there was only a small group sat at the bar itself just round the corner. I'm sure it would have picked up as the evening went on, especially with restaurants south of the river becoming increasingly more popular.

It did mean that, as hungry as we were, we got through our meal quickly and enjoyed an early evening stroll through town. The waiter was very friendly and attentive with only us to serve.

I'd definitely recommend Hide and Seed to anyone looking for cocktails and/or burgers in the area. The hide burger in particular. I should imagine it's also a good restaurant for hotel guests fancying some of their small plates, or perhaps a wine and cheese board night cap.

Zomato kindly invited me to give it a go, which was a lovely gesture. They know I love my burgers! Thank you Alex and Zomato x

Earlier this month, I was very kindly invited to try the food at Hide and Seed by the lovely people at Zomato. If you don’t know Zomato you should! It’s a wicked website and app that helps you discover more places to eat and drink in cities all over the world. I use a lot in London. The app really is slick – download it now!

Whenever I decide to explore more of London's food scene, my dining excursions normally tend to take me straight into the heart of the city.

So, a few weekends ago, I saw it as a refreshing break in the pattern when Zomato offered the opportunity to sample some of my side of London's culinary offerings.

And what an offering it turned out to be!

As the name suggests, Hide & Seed doesn't shy away from its ever-changing, meat-heavy menu, although there are some fantastic vegetarian options too. The restaurant places a strong emphasis on sourcing the best ingredients, with many coming from Hide & Seed's own farm. There is also a Robata grill on-site, which hinted at the promise of perfectly grilled meat on the way.

Before long, our starters appeared.

Hide & Seed originally opened with Portuguese head chef Ricardo Soares at the helm. Some of these influences can still be felt, especially when it came to these two dishes.

I'm a massive fan of croquettes, and Hide & Seed's version only strengthened my affection. There were two different types on the plate: cod, as well as Spanish ham, served with a coriander dip. Croquettes, if fried for too long, can become stodgy, but these were light and packed full of flavour.

Chris was most excited about our second starter: chorizo 'bites', accompanied by quince gel, goat's cheese and Spanish green peppers. Easily devoured in one bite, these disappeared quickly!

Our appetites fully awake, we were relieved to find that our mains soon followed.

We opted for the restaurant's signature burger, an 8oz beef patty with homemade bread buns, barbecue sauce and a generous portion of skinny fries on the side.

The second main was what could only be described as deconstructed barbecue-glazed pork ribs. Deboned and served on a little cake of polenta, along with some caramelised butternut and a creamy potato puree, this plate looked like a little piece of art.

While we couldn't find anything amiss with the burger, as it was succulent and well seasoned, the pork ribs simply stole the limelight to become the star of our meal. Imagine the best pulled pork - think sticky-sweet and tender - you've ever had, and you'll be close to this dish, which is brought closer to perfection thanks to its delicious accompaniments.

We chose a dessert and I don't regret a single calorie gained from the dish that was delivered to us.
The dessert in question? A super chocolaty and indulgent baked cheese caramel cake with tea truffles and stracciatella ice cream. It was as tasty as that description suggests.

By the end of the evening, we felt like we had truly experienced the best of both worlds. Firstly, the restaurant is ideally placed for those living south of the river and, secondly, the food was impeccable.

Even if you don't live south of the Thames, I'd recommend venturing out for the food alone; we had some memorable dishes that night - so much so that I'm still daydreaming about those croquettes and pork ribs even now.

Earlier this month, I was very kindly invited to try the food at Hide and Seed by the lovely people at Zomato.
We booked a table for Saturday night so that we could head to a bar first and check out Putney a bit more. We had margaritas at the newly opened El Patron in their downstairs bar. The food smelt amazing so it made us very hungry for our dinner!

We arrived to an empty restaurant and bar. It really was very quiet. We were shown to our table in the small restarant. There are about 7 tables, in a lovely room. The giant doors are immense! Once looking at the menu we were happy. There is a selection of 5 small plates to start. We ordered the chorizo bites and seafood risotto to share. The Chorizo bites were delicious! I love goats cheese with chorizo and the quince 'gel' worked really well. The risotto was okay. We both felt it lacked a little something in flavour.

We were both stuck between the rump steak and pork ribs next so I went for the pork and D the steak. I won this round. They had de-boned the bbq ribs and served it with potato cream and polenta cake. I really fancied some comfort food and it really hit the spot! Now, it does say on the menu carved rump steak. We thought this meant it would come out like a flat iron sliced. But it came chopped up so small, almost like a stroganoff! Not expected. Also, the mushroom, beetroot, grape and port combo didn't quite work. But I was happily eating my choice! Haha.

We were pretty full but there's always room for dessert. D just went for ice cream - they offer a great range of ice creams and sorbets with some unusual flavours. I went for the eaton mess 'textures'. It was like a deconstructed eaton mess which was hard to eat off a slate but very good.

Apart from the steak mishap, the food here is good and the staff nice. It's just a shame is not a bit busier. I think because the restaurant is in a hotel and it's slightly off the main high street people haven't yet discovered this place.

We had a lovely evening and a big thank you to Zomato for the voucher.

1. Excellent fresh food. My favourite dish was certainly the pork belly starter. Great portion size, super moist and packed with flavour.

2. The mains were also really good in quality. The beef was so tender and packed and cooked well. Perhaps a little bit too medium on the medium rare side. I did struggle to finish the dish as it was quite a big helping but better than leaving hungry!

3. The restaurant is in a hotel so it is a little bit quiet. At one point we were the only diners.

4. Great undiscovered gem in Putney.

If you want to have a calm lunch or dinner on a Sunday, this is the place. I and my boyfriend went to Hide and Seed in Putney on a Sunday afternoon and had the place just for us. The decor is pleasant and the service is ok. It was a bit frustrating that none of the Chef Specials was available on the day though. The explanation was the restaurant was very busy the previous evening. Fair enough. But, this was compensated by the rest of the menu that we had the chance to taste. The presentation was really good and the taste equally good. We definitely will come back. Maybe in another day of the week.

There are many places to eat in and around Putney, most of them on the high street but if you are willing to walk a little further you will find Hide and Seed at the Lodge Hotel. I was recently offered the chance to dine here through Zomato so off I ventured.
The signage for the hotel is discreet (I nearly missed it) and the locals I know didn't know there was a restaurant here.
I was therefore surprised on entering to find a very pleasant and ambient place for my dining shenanigans that night.
The restaurant itself is lined on one side with a fabulous bookshelf filled with interesting titles and on the other decorated with black and white sporting prints. The tables are set with lovely linens, silverware and on this occasion fresh geraniums. Setting it all off are some glorious chandeliers and I do love a chandelier.
I opted for two starters, after all I do have a good appetite. The courgette ravioli (which does not contain pasta just in case you thought it might) and the croquettes. The ravioli was tasty although on the light side especially when compared to the more substantial croquettes. Filled with cod and serrano ham these were delicious and I really enjoyed the coriander sauce that came with. A first for me and a triumph in my opinion.
For the main I opted for the 8oz steak. It was cooked to a perfect medium-rare as per my request and beautifully presented, I would say though, that some elements of the dish, including the plate were on the lighter side of warm. I also felt that the dishes were under-seasoned but as there are condiments on the table this wasn't a big deal.
My final course was the cheeseboard and a liquer coffee.
The coffee was great. Full-bodied and definetly contained whisky, happy days. The cheeseboard I found to be a bit meh, that's a technical term don't you know. It was also served straight from the fridge. If you are going to order this I would recommend letting chef know ahead of time so that the cheeses have time to come to room temperature. It does make a difference.
Apart from a few small details I enjoyed my night. The setting is lovely and the service was friendly and efficient. If I was to give one piece of advice it would be for the waiting staff to have more knowledge on the dishes. I find that more people these days like to know where their meat and food is sourced. I found it somewhat amusing when asked for an explanation of the cheeseboard to be told it was 'brie, cheddar and stilton. I think the brie is from France'. Also if dishes have run out it's a good idea to know this ahead of time, the man on the table next to me needed to re-order twice, the restaurant wasn't full so....... Giving a fuller explanation of dishes and where they are from all adds to a top dining experience.
To end I would say that if you are looking to try somewhere new in Putney with an intimate setting and great quality of food then you should check this place out. Next time I'm in Putney I will happily return and look forward to it.

I left the comforts of Richmond this week and ventured to another South West riverside neighbourhood, Putney. Word around camp fire is Putney is becoming more gentrified, comparisons with Shoreditch, with cocktail bars and the likes popping up here and there. Having said that, when the cool cats @Zomato offered me a chance to check it out, I jumped at the chance. So, if you want to yourself a favour, walk down Upper Richmond Road, past the usual 'restaurant row' (where the likes of Greg Wallace's restaurant meet its demise) until you come to the Lodge Hotel and resident restaurant Hide and Seek.

The Hotel has a modern boutique feel, and the restaurant .... it's more hushed, well, it's basically set in a library, a cosy library at that, decorated with crystal chandeliers. We were right on time for our booking and were offered our choice of seating. I was taken by the feel of the restaurant, it was intimate, dimly lit and a lovely place for an autumn evening. The menu looked traditionally British but with Spanish inference. Perhaps this is influence of the chef Ricardo Soares who is Portuguese and incidentally had trained under Elisher Carter (The Landau).

To start I ordered the autumn truffled chestnut, wild mushroom and zaatar spiced kale. The chic geek went for his favourite .... Pork Belly. Now I've not one iota of what Zaatar is, it appears to be a mix of middle eastern herbs/spices but for me the dish was mostly a trinity of harmony between sweet, salty and cream. It was in fact perfectly balanced. The mushrooms were served in cream with kale underneath, this gave good body to the dish. The chestnuts were sweet and potato-like in texture. All of this topped with roasted Kale that dissolved in puff of delicious nutty saltiness - careful if you do opt for this one - it may induce dribbling.

If I could say anything about the crispy pork belly was that it presented beautifully, the meat was portioned up well and was soft - great gamy flavour, but not too much. The Chic Geek mentioned it was up there with some of the best pork belly's he'd had. But hey, what would he know ;-). It was indulgently good and excellently cooked and served with an amazing smoky consomme, parsnip puree and dots of delicious plum and chilli jam. So far the service had been impeccable, our waitress was confident and explained the menu pre-emptively. We'd not needed to ask for anything, this was the service through the entire sitting.

Two great starters followed by two mains where I feel the chef really hit his stride, the meat was outstanding. We tried the slow cooked 24hr lamb and the 8oz sirloin. It was hard to define in low light photo's but the sirloin was firm and dense with dramatic results in flavour, I suspect from the robata grill. The 24hr lamb had the familiar middle eastern/north african flavours with celeriac cream and a sweet potato puree. There is definite ability here, the flavour intensity in the purees' were stellar.

To finish we had a trio of chocolate of what was a delectable chocolate ice cream with fresh mint, a parfait of white chocolate with once again strong milk flavour component, and finally a choc nut brownie. All ice creams were hand made and each piece was delicious. We also tried the cheeseboard, a selection of English Stilton, French Brie and English Cheddar. I am normally not too keen on English cheese as they tend to be saturated with salt instead of flavour, but at Hide & Seed they had picked excellently.

Overall Hide & Seed must be one of, if not, Putney's finest restaurant. The menu is under stated, but this adds to the delight and once you've dined here, one feels you must return. I'm honestly not convinced on the faux library setting but for autumn, and the winter months to follow, it will, in my opinion, only just be good enough in comparison to the excellent food served here.

Great venue, friendly staff and fairly adventurous food that to be honest doesn't always work - but 10/10 for avoiding a boring, standard menu. There is a 15% discount on Monday - Wednesday dinners so it's well worth checking out.
