If you haven't been to Maharani before, I suggest you try their Sunday buffet spread. It is good value for money and the best way to decide whether you like their food or not.
I am always on the look out for authentic Indian/South Asian cuisine and Maharani is one of the handful that make the mark. I was rather impressed by their Sunday buffet which is good value for money and also well prepared. The restaurant is not one of the typical London curry houses and this tends to put off some people. However, to me the authenticity of taste is what matters. Of course, they have chicken tikka masala if that is what you like eating, but if you are the adventurous kind, try the house specials. I would definitely recommend their lamb dishes as these are as good as the ones found in the Indian subcontinent. Although they eat goat there and not lamb. Their kebabs and tandooris have just the right amount of spice, without making your eyes stream and they have never delivered a charred tandoori chicken. Even the British-Indian concoctions, as the salmon tikka masala, are a tribute to south Asian flavours.
I would definitely recommend Maharani to everyone because their chefs pay heed to your requirements and you never have to worry about their delivery service. The staff and the chef are accommodating and dishes can be tailored to your needs or your children's needs. The prices are reasonable and they have their own bar. You don't have to bring your beer with you unlike some restaurants in Brick Lane. They are open till late on weekends and can serve large groups of people.
This is a slightly more upmarket curry house (or at least is trying to be) situated bang in the middle of the brouhaha of Clapham High Street.
One of three on the road between Clapham tubes, North and Common, Maharani has the best reputation and the decor inside lives up to this, or at least relative to the area.
As an advocate of Tooting being the curry capital of London (if not Europe) I prefer a bit more character than these somewhat sterile, Anglicised affairs. This said, that is my opinion and isn't as much a fault as a preference.
The food was certainly good, although the naan was a bit dry. We tried two specials the lamb apeli gosht which had a heavily garnished, leafy taste and the goan chicken masala, that had a bitter, yoghurty edge. Both commendable.
Whilst slightly pricier, the main dishes and interior live up to the price tag. The staff are also good although sometimes they were a little hasty in clearing up and took attentiveness to a new level. At times it felt like they were permanently occupying a continuous and irritating imaginary conveyor belt around the centre of the restaurant which passed by our table at too often a frequency. This said, in general, a decent curry venue for central Clapham, but for a more adventurous and authentic experience then a short trek to Tooting is definitely in order.
If you want a traditional Indian meal out in Clapham with no twists or gimmicks, choose Maharani.
Impeccable service and reasonable prices.
Recent menu updates have resulted in improved variety of dishes
Good value and great tasting food. This place isn’t fancy or pretentious, it’s just really good curry and the staff are super friendly and I’ve personally never had a bad meal here which is why we keep coming back. For 2 people sharing a curry and side dish with the naan and rice plus a drink each it’s around £30 which in this day and age is very good value for money. If you’re looking for a good classically English curry house this place should tick all your boxes.
Best curry house in the uk! I’m local, and try and go once a week! I also go with my football team, the staff are great, and gave us all free shots of Baileys at the end! The food is sublime and the beer is great! Couldn’t recommend enough! Maharani rules
Like stepping back into 1970. Small space with many tables. Think Only Fools and horses lol. Staff are extraordinarily the grumpiest I’ve ever been served by in a restaurant but THE FOOD WAS GOOD! The chicken tikka was over done and rather dry but the dishes were very well flavoured and reasonably priced. We went on a Tuesday night so it wasn’t busy. Bill was £100 for 5.
Have had the most delicious Bangladeshi food. The lamb chops are to die for and you mustvtry Achari Chicken
Have been here several times. It’s a fabulous authentic traditional curry house. Fantastic service and all the usual curry dishes. There’s loads of seating too. Recommended!
Amazing food, one of the best and Such lovely service!
This is a great restaurant and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a great indian meal. I come here for special occasions and it is amazing! The staff are VERY friendly and even have a conversation with us (we know them). The food is absolutely delicious and is not too fancy, it just gets to the point and you can get a brilliant curry/korma. Also the price is worth what you are getting,
If I could give this more than 5 stars I could!
Ideal place for Authentic Indian food in Clapham.
Staffs are extremely friendly and reasonable price foods.
Really tasty food and a well-maintained restaurant with quick service; however, the staff whilst efficient, weren't particularly chatty or offering/checking on us during the meal.
