If you want a decent pint of ale, this is undoubtedly the best pub in London. The slight drawback is too many people know it, so it gets a bit busy!

Amazing beer selection, including large Mikkeller bottles. One of the rare places in London with lambic on tap. And all reasonably priced!

I am in love with their dishes. They have one of the yummiest food in town. I tried their salad and I'm already in love with it. The veggies were so fresh and green. Also the ambience is so good. I'm happy I visited this place. Also they have yummy deserts one should definitely try.

Good solid pub. The selection of beers is extensive, and the gin cocktail list is worth a look too. Great ambience and character in a local neighbourhood spot.

The Earl Of Essex Islington is located off the beaten path, in Angel’s residential streets but for those who choose to seek it out, the reward is one of the best craft beer pubs in London.

We pressed on towards Angel, and decided to make one more stop at the Earl of Essex, a craft beer pub tucked away in a residential part of Islington. Tom took us via Camden Passage - a lively little pedestrian street which I can't believe I have never found before. Taro was on the hunt for food, but we managed to stay on track and got some seats at the bar. I love a good beer board, and the Earl of Essex didn't disappoint. The selection is fantastic - I knew most of the breweries but they had some really interesting beers from each one. We tried all sorts, making up for my lack of a beer flight at the Taproom earlier on:

Oskar Blues Dales Pale Ale, Brugse Zot Brune, Moor Revival, Offbeat Grateful Deaf, Liverpool Beer Co American Red & IPA, Magic Rock Clown Juice and Arbor Twigs in Space were all sampled. I was particularly impressed by the Liverpool Beer Co offerings. Moor Beer Co (Somerset) continue to be one of my favourite breweries. There are lots of great beers in the fridge too, including some craft cans all the way from Maui in Hawaii - Maui Brewing Co Big Wave will convert you to canned beer.

It's a very friendly pub, and the staff looked after us very well (especially hungry Taro - see his previous List form here). Everything on the food menu is paired with a beer that they should have in stock. There is a nice garden out back too, though we don't have many beer garden days left this year. Whilst Tom and I chatted about football, Taro befriended a barman who works round the corner at Smokehouse - a new gastropub (near the top of The List's most wanted) with smoked meats and a huge amount of beer on tap. It is one of many places around Upper Street that I need to start ticking off - House of Wolf, John Salt, North Pole, 69 Colebrooke Row, Ottolenghi and Slim Jim's to name a few! Thanks to Tom and Taro for kicking off the Islington List exploration.

Truly one of the best pubs in London if you want amazing keg beers and maybe a decent plate of hot food. Also has a nice small walled garden round the back which is pretty shielded from the wind. They had a great range of beers in different styles. In a lovely area of Islington housing. What an local pub this is!

One of the great pubs. The Earl of Essex is apart of a local group of amazing craft beer pubs. All of them have a great selection of rotating taps from across the country. The Earl of Essex has a lovely garden out the back, and a well designed interior with lots of seating. The food is usually really nice, and the truffle Parmesan chips we had were very tasty. The only thing to note is that it is slightly more expensive than your average boozer.

Amazing food and friendly staff. I had the chips and homemade curry sauce (vegan), as well as the banana, peanut butter and toffee cheesecake (also vegan); both were so delicious I nearly forgot to take any photos!

If you value the craft of beer and genuine approach to elevated pub food, then this quaint little neighborhood spot is a must try. Awesome atmosphere. Great selection of craft beers on draft and cask. Cool vibe. They don’t take themselves too seriously.

Pleasant public house, welcoming and friendly staff. Fantastic choice of beers and lagers - many local brews. Food was good. Atmosphere is good - busy but relaxed. Impressive outdoor space out the back. Plenty of cycle parking at the front. Located in an interesting area.

Good variety of beers, delicious food. A bit on the pricey side of beerland.

Aussies will love that they have a parma on the menu (seasonally). Staff are good value. My mate recommended the Sunday roast chicken—great value. Super juicy. Large range of beers on tap. The Neck Oil is an easy drinker. Lovely location right next to the canal.

Lovely pub with a nice outdoor area. Lager wise we're talking £6.80 or £6.20 for a Camden Hells. The Redemption ale for £5.90 was also nice.

Fish and chips were good. Fish was slightly overcooked but not too dry. This pub has a good selection on beers.
