Had an amazing dinner at the Hoppers yesterday. First time trying Sri Lankan food and loved it, we had no idea what to expect but everything tasted so good. For starters we had the devilled paneer which was nice and really spicy! Lamb kothu roti was also really good. We then had the chicken kari for mains, we've ordered a hopper, a dosa to go with the curry to see the difference, the dosa was massive, and they were all lovely! We also had the green mango cooler which was so refreshing! We saw other people order the lamb shank and it looked so nice but we were too full to fit any more food in, so next time we will give this a try!

This is possibly the best Sri Lankan food in London. The menu is not extensive, and the portions are not big, but everything in it is mouth-wateringly delicious. It feels like the home-cooking of my childhood, and instantly transported me back to Colombo. It is a beautifully decorated place and feels relaxed. There is a large (covered) terrace. On busy nights it might be worth booking a table but front of house staff do their best to cater for walk-ins, too.

Sri-Lankan food done well ish….. and let me tell you why. Having travelled to Sri-Lanka and being very impressed with the food, I was very excited to try out this authentic restaurant, in the heart of Kings Cross. Let me start with the booking process. It was straight forward, but as we are a group of 8, had to pay a £200 deposit. A little steep don’t you think! Fast forward 3 days and we are greeted at the front door of the restaurant by smiley faces and helpful staff. Our group of 8 were showed to our right squeeze of a booth. The table really is more suited to 5 or 6 people than 8, but we made it work. The menu was minimal, and I didn’t really know what I was doing. The staff did however try to explain the concept, but it was so noisy that I couldn’t really make out what they were saying. Putting that aside, and after a quick Google as to what everything on the menu was, I decided to go for the Hopper (it is called Hoppers restaurant after all), and a lamb shank biriyani. As they had run out of lamb shank on their busiest day, I was then forced to quickly choose something else - the chicken curry. Overall, I’d say the food was good, but not quite the authentic and bustling flavours that I’d experienced on my travelled. However, the devilled squid was exceptional! We then move onto desert - the chocolate biscuit pudding was lovely, but 2 or 3 spoonfuls was more than enough. It was incredibly rich! I wouldn’t be in a great rush to return, but glad we gave it a try.

I personally wouldn't come back mainly because all dishes are somewhat spicy, with no option for non spicy in any of them. That said, I did enjoy the squid as a starter and having the lamb as a main. My colleagues who like it really hot, complained the food wasn't hot enough. So, if you like spicy, make sure you ask for proper hot. If you don't like spicy, think twice before coming as there won't be options. Good portions for sharing though, staff was professional and attentive, and service was quick 👌

Amazing food! We were lucky to get in early Saturday evening, even though we’d not booked we were offered one of the high bar tables. Staff were super friendly, could not have been more helpful. Food was absolutely lovely, full of flavour and can’t wait to go back! One of the managers came over after our meal and asked if everything was OK, had a really nice chat with him, we left feeling like royalty! 😊

Great food (albeit beware if you don't like spicy!). Also it is more of a tapas concept so it can add up to a fair bit but really tasty and well cooked food. Service was excellent - they advised us to get cheaper dishes and replaced a dish we dropped to the floor without a comment.

Went in for a light dinner and ordered a few plates of starters. It was around 9pm and the restaurant was buzzing and still slightly busy - the experience was quite enjoyable. You must ask the waiter for their Banana leaf from the secret menu, it was absolutely delicious! We did ask for recommendations from the waiter, to be honest, waiter’s recommendation of the Chettinadu Chicken Bites starters was pretty mediocre as it was over cooked and slightly dry. We decided on the hot butter squid which was really really good, a 10 out of 10 and the mutton rolls + Lankan ketchup was decent. Drinks were nice and refreshing. I wasn’t too happy about the mandatory service charge since the service was okay but not brilliant and also this is the UK.

We ordered the hot butter squid, prawn kari with basmati rice and my partner ordered the lamb kothuroti. The squid starter was flavourful and delicious. I really enjoyed the main prawn kari; the taste resembled those I had tried in Sri Lanka. It was a little spicy, but also delicious that I wanted to continue eating it. I asked for some yoghurt and the waiter got this for us very quickly. It paired very well and I cleared both plates. Unfortunately, my partner didn’t enjoy the kothuroti. There was more salad than roti and lamb and he didn’t like kale, which took up half of the plate and lacked flavour, which we felt was not worth the hefty price of £15. The tables for two were also placed just too close together and we could overhear too many conversations. However, the service was great. There were many waiters on the floor and all waiters that we encountered were very attentive and friendly. Overall, expensive for the portions served, but a positive experience.

Amazingly tasty food with super crispy roti. The dahl is a great texture to eat with the roti and hoppers. The dosas aren't served with chutneys so you have to order them separately which is a little strange as they are included at many other restaurants. Restaurant is always busy so can be loud inside.
