I so wanted to give The Old House 1147 the 5 stars that it used to warrant, however for me it loses a star for a couple of reasons.
For a start, and most personally crucially, it is less of a chef's dining experience compared to when we were last there in 2021. Back then the menu was creative, a bit adventurous, tasty, and a bit different. Now the Old House is another casual dining outlet. Admittedly however a good one.
The other reason I have taken the once 5 star rating down to 4 stars is perhaps a little bit picky. And that is that I felt the service was, again admittedly, on rare occasions ever so slightly off. For example, dumping the dessert cutlery on the table and leaving us to sort them. A small thing yes, but I was expecting better. And to be fair 98% of the time it was.
We would definitely go back there, especially on a warm afternoon or early evening when you can sit outside. It is at the end of the day a special place, the history, the stunning Tuscany-like view, the lovely village, and the building itself are the key factors that make it so.
Nice upper market pub b&b inn type stay with amazing views of Welsh countryside and hills. The evening meal and breakfast was good quality. The room was spacious and my room had an extra double bed bunk bed. Perfect for a night stop over on the way to Port Talbot.
The food was really nice. Beautiful place and views. Friendly staff. Will be going back again.
