Viet Guy is one of two Vietnamese restaurants along Northenden’s “main drag” (we’d been to the other one before and thought it OK). We came across this newish opening last year, quite by chance, and popped in for lunch. Loved it and decided that we must come back for dinner. It proved to be a good decision. The layout and furnishings feel more café than restaurant. That actually felt right for the casual nature of the food. And service was lovely – welcoming, efficient and generally very smiley. It’s a short menu although with dishes being available with different proteins , it feels longer. So, for instance, with Vietnam’s best known national dish of pho (which I had for that lunch), you can get it with beef, chicken, duck, prawn or tofu. Goi du du is the Vietnamese take on the Thai som tum salad, albeit without the use of chilli. So, what you have is a light fresh plate of grated green papaya, mango , carrots and herbs. It was taken plain but can be enhanced with chicken or prawn. The other starter was Banh Xeo – a very thin, crispy pancake made from rice flour and vivid yellow from turmeric. A different texture to an Indian poppadum but the same sort of crispiness. Stirfried onions and beansprouts and your choice of protein, in this case tofu, are added and the pancake folded round them. There’s a little mixed salad on the side and dish of fish sauce for dipping. It looked lovely and tasted just as good. Again, really light and fresh with the contrasting crunch from the pancake. We both went with noodle dishes for main courses. Different variations on the same theme. Bun Hanoi is in the northern style, whilst Bun Saigon represents a southern presentation. There didn’t seem to be much difference between the two (we claim no knowledge about Vietnamese food, so maybe others would detect differences). Both have noodles, vegetables, side salad, chopped peanuts, dipping sauce, etc. However, with the latter, the protein is stirfried and they use a little chilli, whereas with the northern version the meat is char-grilled. We had the Saigon version with pork and the Hanoi with a beef and spring roll combo. The spring roll was interesting – a different texture to the more familiar Chinese version – lighter and crunchier, so presumably a different type of wrapper is used. Both dishes come with a dipping sauce. Both are complete successes. In due course, we may run out of things we fancy eating on the short menu. But not for now. We’ll be back.

We tried a variety of their starters including the summer rolls, salt and pepper chicken wings and spring rolls. They were all incredible! Fresh and tasty. Tastes authentic and freshly cooked. For mains we had the special pho each. Best pho I've ever tasted! The portion sizes are huge so I did struggle to finish my main after devouring the starters. I honestly can't say a bad word about this restaurant. 5 star food and service!

Great fresh food, large portions and excellent value for money. Would definitely recommend. Only downside was that the service wasn’t great, but we did visit on a Saturday evening and the staff appeared busy.

This place has a special place in my heart as sad as it sounds. Me and my partner always come here whenever the diet allows. They had a new waiter Zack (I think). He was absolutely brilliant, very friendly and accommodating. Good luck Zack. Next time we come in we expect you to remember our order 😉 (only kidding). The only lady who was doing her make up on the table (don’t be surprised next time, I do this quiet often) 😂

I have been to Viet Guy many times and have introduced lots of friends to this restaurant. The modest interior belies a skillful chef. The food is delicious and according to my Vietnamese wife and our visits to that fabulous country, it's very close to the excellent food served in Vietnam. We've tried nearly everything including the vegetarian options and every dish has been well prepared, tasty and fresh. The staff are friendly and attentive. Even if you're not in the vicinity, it's worth a trip to this place and your wallet won't feel the pain.

First visit for us as a family and first venture into Vietnames food. Overaul view, will definately return again. The traditional pancakes were fantastic as were the salt and pepper prawns, everything tasted fresh. We ordedred too much food and felt guilty about the waste but everyone tried each others meal and were very impressed. Drinks reasonably priced for a restaurant, genuine Vietnamese beer at £3.50 a bottle, nice tasting as well. All in all a good place to visit, fantastic food at good prices, friendly staff and not too far away.

The food was very tasty. I recommend it to everyone - the customer service was excellent I would go back again. The special noodle soup was to die for you and the papaya salad is a good vegetarian offering for those looking not to eat meat.

enjoyed our spur of the moment lunch here me Saturday. Great choice on the menu, all different to us. Shared a couple of starters and had a main meal each, two soup style meals and a variation of pad Thai. All very enjoyable and very friendly staff.

I do like my Vietnamese and to find this place in Northenden was surprising. The negative side first. The place itself feels cold and a bit soulless. Actually that was the thing that stood out the most. It felt very odd to be eating in that environment. The decor? The lighting (I think the white light made it quite clinical)? I cannot really say. It also was not inviting to spend long chatty time there. The client base was very eclectic: a table of elderly women to a table of uni mates... very diverse. The service was adequate. Now the main reason why you’d go to this place: the food. I had a prawn summer roll and a bun bo hue. The summer roll was larger than regular and very nicely stuffed. The taste was great... again nothing more or less than what you should be expecting from a summer roll. Bun bo hue (rice noodle in a spicy soup with beef topping) could have been better. The stock was somewhat not as flavoursome as I was expecting. Maybe a lack of beef bones? Or brewing time. I wanted more beef flavour in that (this comment goes as well on the Pho). Not spicy enough but the condiment and herb was the touch needed and all was great. All in all. It was a pleasant experience and will go again! Or... order it from Deliveroo. The food was equally good!

Excellent foods in authentic Vietnamese cuisine and Helpful staff 👍🏻. All the sauces here are perfect. Highly recommend summer rolls with peanut sauce. It is fresh, juicy and the sauce is incredible. Salt and pepper dishes are good as well, crispy and tasty. It is worth to try Vietnamese noodles here, perfect soup with many choices of toppings. Also, coconut sizzling could be a brand-new experience for you with the food served on a hot dish and the mouthwatering smell of coconut sauce!!!!!

Both of us enjoyed our meals. I had Viet Guy Special Noodles which were delicious, lovely sauce, it had crushed peanuts on the side which also added something nice to the dish. My Mum had a crispy pancake containing prawns which she said were lovely, beansprouts and some other veg, she said it was absolutely beautiful. She had a jasmine tea and I had a homemade lemonade which was quite nice. For personal taste I'd have it slightly less sweet, but it was still enjoyable, and that is just personal preference really. Staff were very friendly. Service was very quick.

Visited Viet Guy for the first and unfortunately last time today. Upon entering the restaurant you are kind of stuck in an expanse of no man's land while you wait for a member of staff right at the back to notice you. The waitress was friendly enough and after sitting down we got to see the menu. Don't worry if you are unable to see the menu online - just look for Mi & Pho as it is exactly the same! I say exactly the same, I should really clarify a little there - the dishes are the same, but the prices quite a bit dearer and smaller. For drinks I had a diet coke (£1.80 for a can) while my missus had one of the two beers on offer (small bottle, £3.50). Starters were chicken wings and chicken spring rolls which were both, quality and quantity-wise, far superior to the 'mains'. We had the sizzling coconut seafood dish and the chicken egg fried rice. The coconut dish DOES NOT COME WITH ANY SIDE - it is literally the skillet in the picture and nothing else - not even a plate. The egg fried rice came on a plate with a three slice cucumber side and nothing else, and was more like a side, portion-wise, with seemingly mechanically processed chicken and basic rice. Basically, we got a complete meal between us at twice the price of the same at Mi & Pho, but without the great customer service or attention to detail. At no point did anyone ask if everything was okay. The chef who brought my dish over couldn't speak because he was actually chewing a gobful of food when he put the skillet down, so just mumbled something incoherent and wandered off. The quality of food was good, but good enough to warrant the reviews it's got? Not in my opinion. My advice is try one of the many many other eateries in the vicinity. There is a lot of choice out there and one that charges so much for mains that don't come with rice / noodles included in the price and sell 25p cans of coke as £1.80 soft drinks won't get our business again.
