Japonica Japanese Restaurant

Had a lovely girls catch up dinner here recently. Family run (very friendly) and really tasty food. We ordered so much food. We started with a selection to share - crispy chicken, sushi, potato and chicken bites and gyozos. And then moved on to main where I ordered the Katsu don which was crumbled pork, onions and rice. Really delicious and generous portions. Will be back.

I had some take away from this restuarant. The dishes were hit n miss unfortunately. Initially the hot green salad was really tasty served with a sweet sauce. The miso soup was delicious, with a good depth of flavour. The miso eggplant was moorish and perfectly cooked, soft in the middle and moorish. The tempura prawns were good, served with a light batter and the prawns cooked well. The mushrooms were tasty, and plump with a nice sauce. But ny chicken karaage was dry, thin pieces of unpleasant thin strips of, chicken. This was THE worst chicken karaage I've ever eaten. Awful!! Avoid this dish. My unagi (eel) was cooked well, and tge sauce wasn't too sweet. A good dish. The fresh tuna was really disappointing. The tuna sashimi and sushi was so watery, and I have never eaten anything like it before. There was no flavour to this dish other than watery ... well nothing! This was THE worst fresh tuna I've ever eaten. Just awful. Avoid this dish. Overall the meal was really average and I hope my score reflects that.

There is nothing Japanese about the decor. On a less busy service, the staff can be too eager to clear plates--I don't know why. The restaurant comes of as a misinterpretation of Japanese food. There's nothing authentic about the food: The gyoza was obviously microwaved, the tofu dish was flavourless, the beef tongue was tough, chewy, and bland. Even the decor is confusing. It's just hard to recommend a place like this. The most I could say for them is that they're dining area is clean. I can't think of a time when I'd recommend eating here.
