A lovely old fashioned cafe and bakery. It has the beams and ambience of an ancient dwelling and the owner has lived there all her life. We had a pleasant lunch and conversation in what must be a real cornerstone of Newbury life.
Stopped for something to eat after a long journey. A warm welcome and an all day breakfast which was absolutely delicious.
One of those lovely old bakeries where there is a cafe in the back. Locally sourced ingredients, including flour from the local mill and years of skill by artisan bakers. A really lovely, friendly owner too - proper old school.
Definitely worth a visit - even if it’s only to marvel at the fabulous display of treats in the front window!

Was visiting Newbury and stumbled upon this lovely bakery! My wife and I just had a rum truffle and a donut between us and both were fantastic. £2.90 for both so reasonably priced. The lovely older lady serving was friendly and chatty and this place is the kind of bakery we all used to visit when we were children. I wish we lived closer so we could visit regularly but probably for the best as I'd be the size of a house!!
If you want the best Lardy cake in the world- you go to Empire Cafe
They can also post worldwide
Thanks to the baker, Wendy.
It was worth the wait!!!
Home cooked meals
Great for good old home cooked meals, reasonably priced considering is actually home cooked by the owner on the premises, bakery is really good as well
I can’t think of a bakery I like more. (Disclaimer - I’ve not eaten in the café so this review is really just about the bakery part of the business.) This is a proper old-fashioned English bakery, making real bread, with delicious traditional cakes and patisserie, as well as sausage rolls and pastries. The bread is excellent and the cream slices great. They also sell flour, jams and local free range eggs, and I’ve seen them sell fresh yeast to customers too. Friendly service and good everything baked in old-fashioned brick ovens. Bakeries like this are rare these days, and the prices are reasonable too. This is no hipster sourdough bakery - this is the real thing.
Excellent service and food cooked to order will definitely be going back
Lovely and cozy find in Newbury
What I'd call a great experience; lovely traditional café with a deceptively big menu, home cooked food to order at good prices. Who could resist taking home a cheeky cake afterwards? Especially fond of the almond biscuits and danishes. A great place in Newbury for anybody, and Wendy the owner is such a lovely person to add. I'd recommend to anybody who likes good food and good customer service.
Just nowhere else like it. A wonderful variety of bread, cakes and savouries as well as a comprehensive menu of British breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas, all baked and cooked fresh on the premises. Great service and a lovely traditional setting. Celebration cakes baked and decorated to order are second to none and the traditional lardy cakes are another speciality of the bakery. Nothing is ever too much trouble for Wendy and her team. An integral part of Newbury and a tremendous asset to the town.
