Small place, very casual, supreme cooking. This is ideal if you want to eat meat with a low carbon footprint. Lots of game shot in Northumberland and they know how to make what can be dry into the tastiest parcels. Bargains on wine list too, such as 8-yearold Croze-Hermitage for £30...

Delicious food - I’ve been thinking of visiting for a while and finally got around to it this weekend - the food and the wine were amazing, especially the game. Would definitely go again

The food, ambience and service here is excellent. A lovely neighbourhood restaurant! I highly recommend it to all. There is also lots of game on the menu, which adds great variety to the area and it’s all sourced locally. Friendly knowledgeable staff and good booze selection. Can’t wait to go back!!!

We popped in here for lunch - really pleased we did! Goats cheese sandwich was lovely, as was the moules frites. Would really like to return one evening to try the a la carte menu. The restaurant is in a really nice area, & we expected the prices to be high - but we actually thought it was very reasonably priced.

My partner and I were visiting family in the area and wanted to try something quite different to what we would get at home (NZ). We liked that the food is predominantly locally sourced and seasonal. We opted for pheasant and mussels for our starters and then wood pigeon and venison for mains. The food was sensational. Really well done and presented fabulously. We also received great service from the Maître d’. He explained all of the dishes really well and was very accommodating when I was choosing wine (the Beaujolais I had was beautiful). Will definitely return next time we are in the North East.

I think the title says it all really! First class service and cooking, from the delightful starters to the incredible mains everything eaten really was superb. I couldn’t recommend this place enough and thought for the quality of the food it was excellent value and we are all already planning our next visit. Well done to the whole bistro team, keep up the stellar work!!

Good food but set against finding it was over £10 more expensive than originally quoted price per head (this was a pre-booked works Christmas meal). Moreover, my coat, taken and hung up by a waiter was taken by someone. The waiter clearly couldn't have cared less - totally indifferent to the loss. For large groups - place became like a jacuzzi. Good food but service left a lot to be desired. Will think twice before recommening it to anyone.

Bistro Forty Six provided exceptional food, good service and a very pleasant ambience. It was well worth the journey from Manchester to meet up with the family there. Jay Rayner was dining at the next table. I hope he enjoyed the restaurant too!

It was a quiet evening as the rest of the world were fighting their way through the crowds in a frenzy of purchasing! We, on the other hand, enjoyed a calm dinner with amazing food, principally game based, with excellent, unobtrusive service. The wine was reasonably priced and complemented the dishes superbly. I am positive that, even on the busiest services, this restaurant will offer a really good experience to its diners. We will be going back!

We have eaten here a couple of times. Quite honestly it’s probably the best restaurant we have eaten in. Lovely atmosphere great food and the best food ever.

We had a really fabulous experience at this restaurant last night. The food is so very tasty and also very generous portions. There is a good choice on offer even though it’s not a big menu. Good choices on fish and vegetarian as well as the fabulous venison and other locally - sourced produce. And, to top it all, the front of house is very good too. It’s a smallish restaurant in a quiet street. Highly recommended

Had the celeriac and cumin soup followed by signature venison. Generous servings! Didn't need the extra veg. Excellent service. Everything grown or foraged but the chef apparently!

Went with friends for birthday dinner. The ‘ethos’ was explained ! The mussels were cold albeit the broth was warm and there were lumps of what looked like pork floating which were dry, chewy and indigestible The mains arrived but the veg did not until we had albeit finished and as they were all extras would have been sent back The food is average, Had better non boba and the halibut one could have cooked at home And as for the puddings Well if there are only two, male sure you have them and if you don’t, font wait until we’ve drunk our coffee and the person who was waiting for it calls you over and you then explain you have no ice cream Some special birthday meal that was Do better

My boyfriend suggested this for a change. I am the type of person who does not like change as we always go to the same places so i was little anxious when he suggested this. We pulled up and to be honest does not look great from the outside so i did have a little moan but my god when the food came i was shocked!!! Was absloutley outstanding in every way one of the best sunday dinners ever and both me and my boyfrind are foodies. I can not recommend this place enough the food and the service just amazing and will be our restaurant of choice.

First time visit to this restaurant. My wife walked past one afternoon saw the early evening menu and was impressed and so we booked to check it out. We were not disappointed and would go as far as to say one of the best foodie experiences we have had in a long time. My starter was an excellent Halibut Fishcake well presented and my wife had a ham terrine which she described as very good. Our mains of Halibut and Venison were superb. The Halibut in particular was perfectly cooked and all the meals were well presented and served. The server was very good and friendly and fully explained each course and the fact that the food was locally sourced and even foraged were appropriate. We also sampled an excellent bottle of French Merlot and overall the cost of £70 including a freely given gratuity(optional and not requested) was very good value for a first class meal and dining experience. We will return.

We visited for my daughter’s birthday as we had read good reviews about this restaurant & they were right! The staff were attentive & knowledgeable about the food . The atmosphere was relaxed & friendly. All of our food was excellent especially the lamb & venison. We will definitely return next time we are in Newcastle.

Venison bons bons, Confit duck leg and 'ma I've dropped my icecream'.. Max (chef owner) butchers and foridges his ingredients and serves them with such passion. Thoroughly enjoyable dining experience had here with good wine and attentive service. Highly reccommendable..
