The Grill

What a fantastic restaurant with amazing views. The chef, Terrance, is phenomenal. We had the capellini as an appetizer and the flavors were amazing. The calamari was the tenderest we’ve ever had and the tomato soup was off the charts. Our entrees were the grilled swordfish and the tuna steak. Words can’t describe how incredible the fish was. We couldn’t stop raving about it. The side of sweet potatoes was unlike any other we’ve tasted- the bacon!!! Christina was our server and her wine recommendations were spot on. For an amazing meal with ambiance and great service, choose the Grill at 41 North.

The steak was amazing but but the service was lacking. The bartenders were not personable and somewhat off putting. The waitstaff seemed overwhelmed as if they had never had a full restaurant before. When we went to order our appetizers, they said we had to order our entrees at the same because they were so busy. I'm sorry but if I'm going to spend almost $300 on a meal for two people, the service should be more capable to handle the demand of a saturday night dinner rush. Since the restaurant has some of the best views of the sunset in Newport, I'd assume that the rush is similar every weekend throughout the summer so there really is no excuse for the lapse in service. While the views and food were great, I don't think I would eat here again.

We had a few meals at 41 North during our stay there. The Grill did a fine job during breakfast and evening snacks/drinks, but was off their game during dinner when there was more of a crowd. We were impressed by our omelettes at breakfast and great drinks during the afternoon but would find other places for dinner. The grilled items (steak and swordfish) were of the quality you could find in a nice supermarket and cook at home. Service was slow and sloppy. Bread came out halfway through appetizers, dinner arrived before appetizers were finished, we were missing silverware and napkins until we requested. Not a top tier experience.

As a New Yorker I expected average. This was average at best. As someone who has alway sat at the bar and notice what everyone does and touches. I've noticed the serving staff use the same gloves all night, touch the top of everyone's glass, take the straws apart with the same hands they have punched into their pos system your meals. If this was 7 months ago I would just say yeah it's expected from a somewhat busy place. Unfortunately in the times we are in I think this is unacceptable. Average meal nothing more nothing less.

We had a table of six adults. We asked a male waiting staff member if he could kindly take our photo. He begrudgingly obliged, but he threw over pillows in the process out of anger. When one of our group members asked him if everything was okay, he squawked that they were "too busy" to be taking people's photos. We only asked for one photo. The serving staff did not fall too far behind this unprofessional gentleman. Multiple requests were made for water refills and went unfulfilled, and drinks and meals were served to the wrong people. When the check came, she gave us one large check of the order of the high hundreds. She didn't ask if we wanted separate checks, and when we tried working out a method of splitting the bill, she became frazzled and did not return to the table for an additional 40 minutes. She was then surprised when we asked her to move things along. After all of those experiences, we left tips on our cards, and those who paid by cash left cash tips. Needless to say, calculating the correct amount was far from easy given the disorder of splitting the check. Once we left and waited in the parking lot for the valet service, a staff member came running out asking us why we didn't tip X amount. None of the six of us will be returning, but we will certainly be spreading the word.

Located on a great spot in the Newport marina, The Grill at Forty 1 North is a classy bar and restaurant to chill with friends and loved ones as the sun goes down or to check out the docked superyachts (and maybe say hi to their owners and crew!). Although known more as a hip bar with cool cocktails, the food and service here are excellent too, for both lunch and dinner. It is pricey, but you are paying a "location tax" and it's worth it for a special treat, or to impress! The seafood towers and the squid ink pasta were fantastic and highly recommended.
