We were in the area walking and looked for somewhere to eat and found this place. Called to book a table and luckily they had a table for us!
Really lovely place. Cosy, warm and plenty of space between tables and had a lovely atmosphere. Even though all the tables were occupied it was not crazy loud and we could still have a sensible conversation (so many places just seem so loud when full)
The menu has enough choice for anyone to find something they want, and obviously because it was Sunday they were also doing roasts (but it's great they also do their regular menu on Sundays too)
I had the burger which was very impressive.
The burger itself was very big, juicy and very flavoursome.
I normally object to paying extra for cheese on a burger however there was a LOT of lovely melted cheese which tasted great with the meat of the burger.
I asked if I could have the pretzel bun that came with the 'garden burger' and was told yes with no hesitation. Glad I did as the pretzel bun was amazingly soft and doughy!
My wife got the roast beef which was also very good.
It came with a jug of gravy so you put on as much or little as you want. I wish everywhere did this!
Good quality beef, cooked nicely and still pink. Lovely buttery mash, perfectly cooked roast potatoes and a bowl of lovely well cooked vegetables.
We shared the sticky toffee pudding for dessert which was the best dessert I've ever had. The sponge was so so soft with a really lovely flavour. It came with a good amount of toffee sauce but not loads (the perfect amount) and unusually the sponge and sauce were not overly sweet which just made the whole thing even nicer to eat.
Service and pace of the whole meal was perfect. We didn't feel rushed at all, ordered quickly after being seated, and the food came out much quicker than we expected considering how busy the place was.
Prices are not cheap, however they are similar to many other places these days. But the quality of the food and service definitely made us feel that the prices here were worth paying.
I can't remember the last time we had such an all round amazing meal and we would definitely recommend this place and we will be back.
Thank you for an amazing experience.
We made a reservation here for lunch after a walk around the Cow and Calf, and they had a nice snug area for the 5 of us (plus a dog!). We went for the “famous pies” and they were truly delicious…amazing pastry, proper pies, great chips on the side. Relaxed, traditional atmosphere. The rest of the menu looked good as well, with a nice selection of vegetarian options. We would come here again just for the pies!
Food, service and ambiance was amazing! Very Christmasy! The festive menu was great, some of the best roasties and cauliflower cheese I've had at a pub. Parsnip soup and herby butter was delicious and the treacle tart was the best ever. I'm still dreaming of that treacle tart.
