My favorite restaurant in Oxford and by far the best Japanese food I've had in the UK. Been there countless times and the food is always great (try the Salmon Terry), the prices are fairly decent, and the owners are always friendly. Sushi night on Thursdays is a must.
Delicious, authentic Japanese food, lovely staff and always a welcoming atmosphere! Love Edamames
Niche market, hours are kinda odd because the campus. Food meets the price point but unfortunately they ran out of salmon which kinda got rid of a third of the menu
The only problem is space. We went there for lunch and were low on time, so we took the forst opportunity when they were able to clear a table for us. Two of us shared a table with four others, and it was not really pleasant to eat surrounded by strangers. But it was worth the food. Everything was delicious and portions were huge. I will most definitely visit again!
Every Thursday is sushi night. This is the bible we (who work down the road) live by. Be it rain or shine, snow or an hour long queue, if there is Edamame's sushi on the other side of it, it's worth it. Especially if you love raw fish.
First of all, their salmon nigiri comes with a generous fish to rice ratio. This is extremely important. The salmon is also so fresh it has a texture that offers up just enough firmness to sink your teeth into satisfactorily before it melts, almost like butter, in your mouth. Next, the unagi (eel) nigiri, seasoned with a sweet soy paste, is one of their must-have specials. The availability of these specials (unagi nigiri, spicy tuna and more) are made known to diners on flimsy pieces of paper pinned to the wall, and customers who have yet to order sit (and queue) in silent fear of them being taken down...
When we go we order (quite frankly) disgusting amounts of sushi, and leave with a stomach so heavy we sometimes take rest on the steps of the Bodleian.
Be mindful of their limited opening times and very specialised menus; they typically only open during University term time (because they are just that good). I have heard that their menu for other days are good as well.

Okay homely food. To be honest, I was majorly disappointed after my first visit. Reading reviews online and seeing the long line of patiently waiting patrons built up very high expectations. Vegetarian dishes tend to be very bland, which is very disappointing. Had far better Japanese at many different restaurants in and out of Japan. Having said that, it's one of the very few (decent) Japanese restaurants in Oxford, and the service is great, so I go back for late lunch from time to time.
We had to wait about 15 minutes in a queue before entering but it totally worth it. Delicious meals, very big potions, friendly staff. The menu each time is limited but you’ll find interesting options for you. They make sushi only on Thursday evenings.
The place isn’t that spacious and there is only one toilet.
One of my favorite restaurants I have ate at in the UK!! Went here twice during my 2 day stay in Oxford because the home-cooked food is so comforting. Extremely high quality and greatly priced for the portion sizes. You are seated with other parties, which is pretty common in Asia. Highly recommend the salmon dishes for dinner!
Heard great things about this place and have been wanting to try for ages! unfortunately there’s always a long line outside and so I only managed to get in today after trying three separate times.
I had the yakiniku beef special (£9), miso soup and rice, and my vegan friend got the tofu steak. We also got the buttered potatoes, which were really good (£4). The miso soup was amazing and the tofu was soft and well seasoned, but I thought the beef was a bit tough and lacked sweetness.
we were seated quite intimately with two other pairs and the turnover rate at this restaurant is quite high, so we spent only about an hour there.
Food was good, but slightly on the pricey side. Seats are limited so sharing with other customers is an efficient and effective way to serve more people! Highly recommend the stir fried burdock!
A wonderful place, a genuine taste of Japan in a small, crowded but friendly space in Oxford. It's excellent value, properly Japanese in flavour and rightly one of the most packed places in the city.
Amazing food and staff, great prices. I think the best sushi I've had in Oxford. Generally a queue but you are seated quickly and definitely worth the wait. Sushi night is Thursday night. Will be back soon to try the normal menu! Highly recommended
I try and eat here every time I’m in Oxford as I grew up in Japan and love their simple but fresh home cooked food and fresh ingredients.
The menus have few dishes but they concentrate on quality.
It’s very popular and there are often lines outside this small restaurant. But turn around is quick—this is not an establishment to linger.
Mind the unusual opening times:
lunch menu - everyday except Monday and Tuesday
sushi night menu - Thursday early evenings
dinner menu - Fri / Sat early evenings
They have meat, fish and vegetable based dishes to choose from. Their Agadashi Tofu is to die for if you come for dinner on the weekend.
Prices are modest. This is not a fancy place, so it will suit students. I paid under £13 including a 10% service charge for a vegetarian lunch with tea.
Super kind and friendly staff.
My first time in Edamame was my first time trying Japanese food. I went back yesterday for the first time in eight years, expecting it to fall short of my memory and every bite was just as delicious as it ever was! Still a bargain too.

After seeing some of their Yelp reviews, I decided to have lunch at this restaurant during a day trip to Oxford. I could not have made a better choice. My mom ordered the salmon teri. The quality of the salmon was exceptional, and the teriyaki sauce was far from standard--in fact, I think it's the best I've ever tasted. I also thought that the texture of the noodles in the chicken yakisoba I ordered was particularly good.
We enjoyed our lunch here so much that we decided to return for dinner. At dinner, the waitress recommended the bata horenso (baby spinach pan-fried in butter and Japanese seasoning), so we decided to give it a try. The sauce was incredibly fragrant and unusual--spinach has never tasted better! The tofu steak (in soy sauce, with radishes and leeks) was another highlight of the meal.
We're already looking forward to coming back and sampling more of the menu.
Loved it! The place is very small in a beautiful area of Oxford on Hollywell Street, opposite new college, which creates a great atmosphere. Staff were really friendly and accommodating, including finding space for our push chair. But mostly the food is great. We had dishes from the Lunch menu, with the specials as well. Experience was great. Highly recommend and will be going back.
