I ordered Indian lunch for my buddies on my birthday, and surely it was not a disappointment. Indian cuisine is loved so much in UK and Malika's has found that blend for the UK and Indian audiences. I order Palak panner, butter chicken, along with a variety of naans and roti (Indian breads). Loved it.
nice ambience and food.. worth trying once.. inhad some indian breads and curry and they were good and kind of similar taste as one can get in India
Malikas - Oxford, England. Being in England, it is obvious that many choices for Indian cuisine would be around Oxford. Malikas goes to a slightly different route by offering a contemporary version of the cuisine. Heading down Cowley Road, this is near the end of the stretch of restaurants and on the cusp of suburbia. Malikas is conveniently located and deserving of the testimonials that it gets.
I went here with a couple on a Sunday - Sundays are went many restaurants in Oxford do buffets. It was a hard choice, but we settled on here.
The inside of the restaurant is divine and gorgeous. It is well maintained, clean and decorated - a few plants in places, a skylight and they even fold the napkins very well (sort of like a stegosaurus). There is a bright and relaxing atmosphere here that has respectability to it but still allows one to have a good time eating
Service is exceptional. The waiter we had was friendly and professional. He was friendly and went further miles such as getting a bigger plate when he saw the one I was using might be a bit small.
Bread was also freshly baked and all that needed to be done was to request some naan bread (though it was more like a roti).
The buffet had a small selection of curries and entrees - actually good so diners could try the lot.
For starters there were papadums which came with a vareity of sauces and salad. Other starters were vegetable pakoras and chicken tikka. The vegetable pakoras were okay - they were a selection of fried vegetables; they went especially well with the sauces. The chicken tikka was cooked really well, combined with well-cooked onions and were infused with a good Marsala mix. Quite different from most Indian buffet entrees, they were lighter and did not detract from the mains.
The curries were a lamb korai (lamb with capsicum, onions and lemon), a chicken kurma (a classic), chicken madras - hotter than usual, bombay aloo (spiced potatoes) and mottor baigon (chickpeas and eggplant). This was a good range of curries, with different levels of spice and different consistencies going from creamy (korma) to vinegary (korai) to au natural (mottor baigon). All of them were really tasty and stood on their own by not being akin to any other in that selection. The roti was freshly baked and soft acting brilliantly for scooping up any extra sauce. Alongside the meal, I had a sweet lassi to try which was very tasty.
To end with, there was a chocolate mousse cake with a selection of fruits around it. This cake was a good finisher to the meal having subtle flavours of spice in it.
Clean, exceptionally friendly and with food par excellence I would love to revisit Malikas.
