We went for a family Christmas meet up meal and it was the first time any of us had been there. We chose it because we were meeting family off of the Fast Cat from the IOW and the pub is just opposite and looks attractive and inviting. It was very busy that night, but the staff were brilliant and we didn't have to wait long for our food which was all delicious and well cooked. They have a good choice of wines, ales and beers also and the ambience of the pub is olde worlde and cosy. They have large TV screens with sports on if anyone wants to watch, and we were also very impressed with the toilets which were very clean considering the amount of people in the pub, and had a very good decor. We will definitely be returning and will recommend this pub to anyone.
Back for another family meal. First time was mothers day and the staff went out of their way to accommodate us all even though we hadn't booked. Today again the food Was delicious and the staff catered for our every need without question. Great food for great prices and great staff. Thank you all.
Really nice local pub. Great food and friendly service.
We visited the Ship Anson a week ago looking for a late breakfast and coffee before visiting the adjacent Royal Docks.
The exterior is period and well maintained and attractive. The interior is traditional, and attractive albeit with multiple Sports Screens, but we did not find these intrusive or distracting.
The welcome was warm and we had no trouble finding a table but I suspect that this would be more difficult later on.
There is a wide selection of beverages to choose from and an excellent and traditional food menu, all at very reasonable prices. Breakfast, served until noon, is excellent and at £4.95, amazing value for money!
The welcome by Keith and his team is professional and friendly, and if he can make time, Keith (from Liverpool!) will, and will tell you about the history of the pub and its connections with the Navy and Admiral Anson.
Toilets - these are well maintained and spotless.
All in all the Ship Anson is well worth visiting.
Highly Recommended!
Amazing owner that gave us the best seat in the house when we booked and explained what we were in town for. Food was great, very fast service and great atmosphere. Received the ship Anson shilling from the owner! Highly recommended!
Convenient location, tasty food, big portion, variety choices of beer, friendly staff and atmosphere🥰

Staff was friendly.
It looks as atmospheric from the outside as it does inside, great service and great food and beer. We ate here throughout our stay in Portsmuth. I recommend !!!
Fabulous atmosphere, great staff. Brilliant stop to have a drink in good company. Flat level entrance. Opposite bus station, and train station and excellent for visit to old navy base. Very old traditional pub. Car parks nearby food sold.
First time back here since the fire earlier in the year, the renovation has been done really well with a great outdoor area for the smokers. As before the staff are great and the service is exceptional.
Also do discount for veterans which is an added bonus.
Best pint of 6X for a long time. Good selection of ales. Light lunch menu was fine, sandwiches were good (one, the bread was a little dry). Good place to sit outside and people watch. Will return to try the evening menu - was told the fish & chips was very good.
