It is extremely rare for me to visit this pub, but I have done so occasionally over many years. Yesterday (25.05.19) was such an occasion.
Not including the hotels in the area, this is the closest pub to Moorgate.
If you are wanting a quiet pub ie no music, this will fit the bill. There is one tap room, and two quieter rooms that are obviously more tranquil. I've always found the latter to be quite pleasant and relaxing.
The rooms appear to be decked out with pine, and are very clean with comfortable seating.
Being a Sam Smiths pub, the price of bitter (which is what I drink) is reasonable- currently £2 for a pint. If you are intending driving here for just one pint only-DON'T. The taste of this beer is awsome and you could easily be tempted to drink more in my opinion.
There is an outside drinking area with solid wooden tables/benches, and the usual car park.
Visiting from out of town:
Although it could be described as being on a bus route, buses along Broom Valley Road are not very frequent, but there is a fix for this.
The quicker access is to catch a bus to Moorgate Rd, and walk for 6 minutes down Burnswick Rd. The pub is located at the bottom, off the small traffic island.
The New Broom has always been a bit marmite. The back room has been a bit rough, and the front room a bit quiet and full of old fogies. The beer, however, has always been good - and cheap too, thanks to this being a Sam Smiths pub.
Recently though, they've started doing Sunday lunch. I was sceptical at first, being a bit of a food snob, but honestly - it's genuinely marvellous. Tons of veg and meat and only a fiver. The first few visits were marred by tough meat but now it's really soft and tender - outstanding.
It is truly a pleasure to head to the Broom for a sunday dinner these days. Who'd a thought it?
Very friendly great staff good selection of stouts, lagers and beers and several fruit beers. The prices are very competitive too. Give it a try if you are in the area.
i may be a bit bias as i run the new broom but wre sell great priced beer 'n'lager we may not be the greatest of pubs but we are friendley ,have a great menu and serve good fresh not frozen sunday lunches come and join us .
Cheap as chips lager, the Alpine 2.8% is very nice, and they do nice crisps. No mobiles allowed though !!!
Good atmosphere, no music so good for a conversation, excellent choice of beer, lager, cider and stout, very friendly and efficient staff
I suffer from b.p.d and anxiety and I use to sit on the same bench outside always at a set time. Now thanks to Carl and Lynne and the regulars I often take time to sit inside and have actual conversation.
