Went for our anniversary, which we mentioned to the staff when they asked us on arrival if this was a special occasion for us - and 10 minutes later they handed us a personalised ‘happy anniversary’ card. Nice touch - as were the personalised menu and the granola to take away after the meal.
Service was very good, prompt and attentive. Atmosphere was nice, slightly formal but definitely not stilted. Wine was good too.
Food was excellent overall. We had the ‘Experience Two’ tasting menu. All the dishes were impressive, top quality, some quite original. I would have given 5 stars but for a couple of things that show why it’s not quite reached Michelin star standard yet:
- sourdough bread was nice but overbaked;
- Parmesan crisps were a bit overcooked;
- the ‘cauliflower cheese’ was original but not particularly interesting (or maybe the flavours were just too subtle for my palate?)
But don’t be put off by these very minor criticisms. Overall, I’d definitely recommend a visit - it was an enjoyable experience and good value for money.
Just finished having Mother’s Day lunch this year The RAFTERS “ Way “ from our ‘Bunker ‘ down in Hillsborough, today it was the Takeaway Way. Picked up from the restaurant by our Son-in Law, WOW it was Superb complete with yes even lovely bread/ special butter, fantastic Lamb, Dauphinois Potatoes, Sauté Cabbage, we accompanied it with bottle of PORTO6 Red Wine a previous James Martin recommendation ( Sainsburys £7.50bottle ) great value.
Well Done to all the Rafters Team. BEST TAKEAWAY WE HVE EVER HAD.
So in a world where everything is changing, one thing that remains the same is Rafters amazing food! Did their new take out menu, £30 for two people, Treacle Bread, Hendo’s Butter, Lamb main course followed by Cheese Cake! Wow, wow, wow!! This place is awesome every single time! We were late collecting as my wife is in the hotel industry and they are going through some difficult times. Thanks to Ali, Sam and all of the staff. It will be tough for many businesses and people over the next few months, good luck to everyone.
We could not fault anything about our visit to rafters. The food, service and feel were absolutely spot on. The relaxed feel of the restaurant and great service without being overly fussy was great.
We both ordered differently though the evening but both came to the conclusion that we had both just had the best meal that we've ever had!
We'll be back very soon!
We have eaten in some pretty spectacular restaurants and our daughter felt she was missing out on a fine dining experience so Rafters was the obvious choice for her 9th birthday.
I’m not sure Rafters is used to catering for kids but she did us proud (as she always does) and equally impressive was the staff’s treatment of us. They made us feel so welcome and her so special.
We loved the tasting menu and gorgeous wine. The service was fantastic, even inviting us into the kitchen to see them making the beautifully presented dishes we had just enjoyed. They went over and above, not least with presenting us with a second round of their fabulous palate cleanser (creme fraiche sorbet with blood orange curd and torched meringue) it’s not even mentioned on the menu but it was absolutely sensational!
Thank you so much Tom & Al and your terrific team for making our daughter’s birthday so unforgettable :-)
Absolutely incredible, I had no idea that Sheffield had somewhere of this quality lurking within it! Yes it is expensive, the £10 Cauliflower Cheese as the special was bordering on insanity, but it did come with a beautiful letter from the chef explaining why he'd made the dish and quite frankly, you just have to lose yourself to the experience and enjoy it. Easily the best restaurant i've been to in Sheffield and I've never seen such a high staff to customer ratio in my life. It was fairly busy but there was always more than enough staff on hand to deal with anything that came up.
We’ve lived in Sheffield for years and have never visited Rafters, having been under the (very wrong) impression that it would be a bit stuffy and formal. Oh my goodness, we have been missing out!
I really can’t say enough nice things about this place - the food was all delicious with little treats between courses, the waiting staff were friendly, and the owner was so enthusiastic and knowledgable about his wine selection! The food alone would be reason to return, but the service really made the evening special.
The place itself is a great mix of smart but comfy and cosy, so you can really settle in for a lovely long evening of eating and drinking. We will be visiting again soon I’m sure!
Overall very expensive for drinks and food, attempted fine dining experience but food tastes mediokre and not amaizng. Service is slow and the waiters boring and unfriendly, overall average
This was a wonderful treat (a Christmas present) and it surpassed expectations.
Everything about the evening - from the great Bloody Mary at the bar just round the corner, to the wonderful sticky bread that opened the meal, to the very thoughtful gift for the following day’s breakfast - was fantastic.
A hugely enjoyable evening, in a relaxed and quite informal setting that also managed to be indulgent and luxurious.
Fabulous staff. Brilliant food. Terrific.
Very much looking forward to going again.
Beautiful, delicious, elegant, creative food - every mouthful of every course was an absolute delight. Excellent service, too. Highlights from the tasting menu for me included the scallops, pigeon and cauliflower. Top quality all round.
Had an evening at Rafters with family recently. We had drinks in the new bar before the meal - service and drinks were great. In the restaurant the the food was excellent and service faultless. My favourite place for a special occasion. Hope to visit again soon.
Eaten at Rafters numerous times now and I have to say it gets better, they are improving every time I go bringing in new menu ideas and entries that are just so good, the Cheese Tart and Quails egg are incredible and always leaving you wanting more! Alistair and his staff are always so welcoming and accommodate for whatever our needs, I and my Mrs don't eat fish so they always give us a stunning alternative. The lovely dining area makes it feel very special and pricing is always fantastic for what you get. Tasting menu under £100, in my opinion, is perfect especially for the quality of the food here. Overall I struggle to find fault, a fantastic meal always thoroughly enjoyed. Oh and the bread and butter is to die for!
Rafters has just started doing a 7 course tasting menu on Tuesday nights in February for £40.
We tried the first Tuesday in Feb and were blown away, as usual, with the quality of the food, service and ambience.
Fantastic value, fantastic food, fantastic recommended wines. My favourite Sheffield restaurant. A wine bar has recently been opened by them too directly underneath. Drinks and staff great, but not decorated to my personal taste.
1 criticism, the carrot cake had too much going on with the extras and none were particularly tasty. My opinion, but otherwise 10/10. Love it.
Until you get your feet under the table, this is an unassuming place. Until being the operative word because as soon as you get up the stairs the experience begins. Such a joy of good service from gazelle like youths with tact and wit in equal measure.
We went for the taster menu and each plate was a delight. Yes we were in good spirits which always helps though I couldn't imagine not being uplifted by this food. It gave us goosebumps of anticipation and pleasure. So good was the experience that we returned the following evening. Now, I was a bit sceptical. To try and repeat such a glorious experience seemed to me to be foolish.
How wrong I was. There were a few changes though I would have been perfectly blissful to have had a full repeat. Al and his crew have done an amazing job of creating a place of excellence, somewhere special to celebrate if you need a reason to go. Personally I don't need an excuse to go again - despite the 200 mile distance, I'll be back!
Recommended by friends and wasn't disappointed, had the tasting menu with wine flight. Some really good cooking. The room is a nice space and the staff are really good. Will be back
We've been to Rafters a few times and have always enjoyed the experience. It's the type of place to go for a special occasion and the food is always of top quality and very original with fabulous ingredients. I would highly recommend Rafters, it's informal but fine dining at the same time.
Our only gripe on this visit was we had to wait a long time to be served. We were given a menu and not approached again for a long while which ultimately meant we we didn't start to eat until over an hour after our arrival. Also, on this occasion, the staff seemed to regularly gather in the kitchen to have a laugh and a joke - whilst I'm not against this at all, it did mean the dining area was completely empty of staff (with just the diners only) and because it's a quiet restaurant, all we could hear was the laughing and joking coming from the kitchen, which spoiled a bit of the ambience.
As I say, I'm not against people laughing, but there needs to be a little more respect paid to the diners who can hear the guffawing whilst trying to have an intimate restaurant experience.
Having said this, we will return as it's a favourite restaurant and well worth experiencing.
If you want a special fine dining experience in Sheffield then Rafters will always please. Beautiful, tasty food and attentive, knowledgeable front of house staff in a relaxed atmosphere. Sheffield’s finest!
Went with family to celebrate my Mums 70th and had the tasting menu. Superb.
They easily dealt with her shellfish allergy.
Some interesting wines as part of the pairing though, if the sommelier is reading, I’d ditch the sherry from the dessert course.
A very warm welcome, fantastic food and wine. They really go the extra mile to tickle your taste buds. Very cosy and relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended
I can definitely recommend the taster menu, it’s delicious and although the portions look small they are the perfect size to enable you to enjoy the whole menu, why would you want bigger portions but not be able to manage dessert!
The staff are really helpful and friendly too.
I only took one pic of the food because I love eggs and wanted to show a friend and I didn’t want to be completely rude by using my phone during the meal all night 😀
