Until you get your feet under the table, this is an unassuming place. Until being the operative word because as soon as you get up the stairs the experience begins. Such a joy of good service from gazelle like youths with tact and wit in equal measure.
We went for the taster menu and each plate was a delight. Yes we were in good spirits which always helps though I couldn't imagine not being uplifted by this food. It gave us goosebumps of anticipation and pleasure. So good was the experience that we returned the following evening. Now, I was a bit sceptical. To try and repeat such a glorious experience seemed to me to be foolish.
How wrong I was. There were a few changes though I would have been perfectly blissful to have had a full repeat. Al and his crew have done an amazing job of creating a place of excellence, somewhere special to celebrate if you need a reason to go. Personally I don't need an excuse to go again - despite the 200 mile distance, I'll be back!
Recommended by friends and wasn't disappointed, had the tasting menu with wine flight. Some really good cooking. The room is a nice space and the staff are really good. Will be back
We've been to Rafters a few times and have always enjoyed the experience. It's the type of place to go for a special occasion and the food is always of top quality and very original with fabulous ingredients. I would highly recommend Rafters, it's informal but fine dining at the same time.
Our only gripe on this visit was we had to wait a long time to be served. We were given a menu and not approached again for a long while which ultimately meant we we didn't start to eat until over an hour after our arrival. Also, on this occasion, the staff seemed to regularly gather in the kitchen to have a laugh and a joke - whilst I'm not against this at all, it did mean the dining area was completely empty of staff (with just the diners only) and because it's a quiet restaurant, all we could hear was the laughing and joking coming from the kitchen, which spoiled a bit of the ambience.
As I say, I'm not against people laughing, but there needs to be a little more respect paid to the diners who can hear the guffawing whilst trying to have an intimate restaurant experience.
Having said this, we will return as it's a favourite restaurant and well worth experiencing.
If you want a special fine dining experience in Sheffield then Rafters will always please. Beautiful, tasty food and attentive, knowledgeable front of house staff in a relaxed atmosphere. Sheffield’s finest!
Went with family to celebrate my Mums 70th and had the tasting menu. Superb.
They easily dealt with her shellfish allergy.
Some interesting wines as part of the pairing though, if the sommelier is reading, I’d ditch the sherry from the dessert course.
A very warm welcome, fantastic food and wine. They really go the extra mile to tickle your taste buds. Very cosy and relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended
I can definitely recommend the taster menu, it’s delicious and although the portions look small they are the perfect size to enable you to enjoy the whole menu, why would you want bigger portions but not be able to manage dessert!
The staff are really helpful and friendly too.
I only took one pic of the food because I love eggs and wanted to show a friend and I didn’t want to be completely rude by using my phone during the meal all night 😀
Amazing food, wonderful ambience. Alistair and his team have created an incredible dining experience.
The food here is terrific - imaginative and delicious. However, although we knew that we were an early booking (6.30) and could not expect to stay after say 8.15, the way in which it was made very clear to us by a grumpy female member of staff towards the end of that period spoiled the experience. Would suggest some customer service training!
A group of 6 for a special occasion, food was again excellent as was the service and ambience, excellent place for a special occasion, you get what you pay for and it's certainly worth paying a little extra for such high quality, the whole party loved everything they had.
We went here before going on to see a show so had to be a little quicker, however this wasn’t a problem and they were very accommodating.
We each had 3 courses and loved every dish - the duck in particular was lovely and the deserts were a little different but equally nice. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for - excellent food, excellent service and a very nice little restaurant.
Absolutely loved the food here. Not cheap but you pay for quality and experience. Had the duck breast and was not disappointed. Amazing decor and fantastic service
After wanting to go for many years, I booked for my partner's 30th birthday and they did not disappoint!
I gave a few days notice for my vegan meal and there was no hassle at all and the food was absolutely delicious. My partner also loved his and the additional cheese course.
The waiting staff were brilliant; my only suggestion is that they brush up on their knowledge of vegan wines (though this may now have been addressed).
Thanks again for having us! Can't wait to return.
Enjoyed a truly unique evening celebrating my girlfriend's birthday with a smorgasbord of sophisticated and delicious courses combined with personal touches that made the evening very special for both of us. Will be returning. Many thanks to Al, Tom and the team.
The food was exceptional and the service was excellent. It was raining and they ordered the taxi for us and even waited for it so we could stay dry. My favourite restaurant in Sheffield.
Rafters, a tiny upstairs 'fine dining' restaurant in a suburb, uses imaginative methods of cooking and sauces. Our amuse bouche, first course, fish and duck main course, and cheese were all excellent. The staff were very young but professional and knowledgeable about the wine and food, as well as appropriately charming. Their marking of it being our 48th wedding anniversary was delightful. The loos were clean and pleasant. The downside? Far too small portions, and NO fruit and veg at all in my dinner, a minute amount in my husband's (5 a day???). This is a Yorkshire fault I know, but they do need to struggle against their provincial roots if they are to succeed in being 'fine dining'.
Ate here in August for my husbands birthday. We did the tasting menu and wine flight. The food was fantastic! Each dish was cooked to perfection and amazing flavours / creations.
I would not recommend the wine flight, it is almost as expensive as the meal and we felt it was a let down! Really minimal quantities of wine and nothing exceptionally. Personally next time I would choose a bottle of wine that we would enjoy!
Overall, lovely place, great atmosphere, and amazing food!
Great food, service, atmosphere. Friendly staff who were attentive but not overly so and who were very knowledgeable about what they were serving. Food was superb, wine was excellent epecially having been given advice on what to order which was much appreciated. Using locally sourced products was nice to see. There was nothing we didn't like.
I went here for a family meal last December and have only just been reminded that I didn't leave a thoroughly deserved review.
The food was excellent. By far the best meal I have had in a restaurant in Sheffield.
The entree of homemade treacle bread with whipped henderson's butter was delicious. As was my main of duck with a fondant potato.
I highly recommend this restaurant and will be revisiting when the next special occasion arises.
We ate dinner from the "simple" dining experience menu. What we experienced was a steady succession of fabulous small dishes to rival anything we have found in London or even Lyon. Service delivered by Alistair and our charming waitress Bella was excellent. The restaurant is small but although full, didn't feel crowded. 7 or 8 courses and a decent bottle of wine for half what we pay in Mayfair. Thoroughly recommended but you should book.
