We went there chiefly because of the food - Make No Bones closed and their team moved to become the in-house caterers at Church. Makes total sense. They get a new state of the art kitchen and much bigger space in a cool part of town (not that Meersbrook isn't cool) and can concentrate on what they do best, which is making amazing vegan food! All underwritten by Oli Sykes' millions. Ace!
The food was sublime, and we tried about half the menu! The beers were a fine selection, a little on the pricey side for out of town but hey ho (and they charge for soda water which nowhere else does).
The bar itself is an interesting space, all dark colours and with interesting mosaics and a spectacular ceiling mural.
Staff were dead friendly and chilled.
There was a match on - England v Sweden and though it was pretty busy and boisterous there were no twats, so a good place to watch the footy without wanting to murder people.
I'm told that it already gets very busy on a night so if you go for the food it's probably best to go during the day.
There's a full programme of stuff for Tramlines - not my kind of stuff but I'm hopeful they'll get some gigs on because it's a decent size and could potentially fill that gap between the smaller/DIY venues and the medium/larger places, like Leeds' Brudenell has done until recently.
There's also a riverside terrace which i haven't seen, apparently.
Will be going back very soon!
The Church is a great place. The minute you walk in you're trying to take it all in - the mosaics, pictures on the ceiling, the confessional, and many more. Nice, friendly staff, great atmosphere. Amazing food. Really worth a visit.
Been here many times for drinks which have always been good.
Went for the first time for their Sunday service and got their Sunday roast. We got a regular and a small 'beef' Wellington. The portions are decent so the small was perfect for me. The food was excellent and wouldn't be able to tell that it was vegan. We would definitely come back again. Only criticism maybe slightly thicker gravy would make it 10/10.
Update: Tried the carrot and spinach wellington, was also very nice.
Excellent and friendly staff, the art and decor is just absolutely stunning, I genuinely cannot put into words how beautiful this place is. Crosses hung from the wall covered in an array of coloured flowers. Stained glass windows and detailed ceiling paintings. Little built in video game huts. Just a true dream. I came when this place first opened, and to come back years later and see how gorgeous it is now is an amazing thing. Last thing, the food. SO delicious. Oh my god. Reasonably priced, too! Overall, I don't think I can credit this place enough. I would come here all the time if I didn't live a 2 hour drive away!
So far, the jewel in the crown of vegan restaurants I've been to. Exemplary food, A* service - the chefs and waiting team here are masters of their craft. Not only a restaurant, but a venue, community space, bar, clothes shop and tattoo parlour - this absolute gem is very nearly centrally located in the UK, making it accessible equally to everyone. Go. Here. Soon as you can
Went there last night with my friend and we had a great time! Great location. The food and drinks are very tasty and have fun names - the staff/waitresses were lovely as well!
Our favourite place to eat!!! We've been here so many times, never disappointed. The food is always amazing, the place looks incredible. We always stop by the photobooth afterwards & if we get there early we play on the games for a bit.
Interesting place with funny decorations. Quite expensive but beer and food were really good. However, my ma’doner could be warm.
Absolutely scrumptious and extensive menu, staff amazing in every way possible, food was stunning and atmosphere and decor beautiful. I could live here for ever and ever.
This place is a lovely converted steel works decorated with some tongue in cheek religious iconography.
Staff are very friendly, beer is great, food is excellent, prices reasonable and a good atmosphere. Really good stop for a Kelham Island pub crawl or a night out.
Quirky and a fun atmosphere. Fantastic food. Great service. Looking forward to visiting again soon.
Delicious food, served in an amazing atmosphere.
The vegan menu was perfect for my husband who has been dairy free for a year, and meant we could order anything on the menu with confidence, but many of the dishes you'd have had trouble to realise it was vegan food. As it was a Sunday afternoon my husband went for the Sunday service, the 'beef' Wellington which was delicious and served with roasties, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and Henderson relish gravy. We ordered cauliflower cheese which was delicious and a couple of extra Yorkshires. The only disappointing thing was the Yorkshires, they were a bit heavy and the wrong texture, but given the ingredients are usually egg and milk I can't fault them for trying.
I had the 'not chicken' skewers with rainbow slaw which was lovely, though the satay sauce was incredibly spicy so I didn't get to enjoy it as much. It's not labelled as spicy on the menu so beware if you order it and are not a fan of hot sauces.
For dessert we had a creme brulee and a solero cheesecake, both were gorgeous and rich, if you're a dairy free person I recommend going even if just for dessert as its so hard to find delicious creamy ones without there being something involving dairy.
My only issue with the atmosphere is that the dining area was quite dark when we sat in there which means you'd struggle to really see and appreciate how beautiful the food looks, though I would just ask for a table in a lighter area if we went again.
The building itself is fabulous, opulent and modern at the same time, little pods to sit in to play PlayStation games and a brilliant photo booth where for £3.50 you get 2 copies of some brilliant photos as a momento. The amazing stained glass windows look great from the outside too. The location is a little bizarre, it's not quite in Kelham island but feels as though it would fit in there. It's worth spending some time looking around inside if you get the chance, the amazing ceiling frescos are so quirky
Prices aren't cheap but are reasonable, for 2 mains, a couple of sides, 2 desserts, a coffee and a bottle of wine came to £73. Service was fantastic from start to finish.
Highly recommended.
