The old bank never disappoints. This intimate up-market restaurant is our favourite place to eat in Norfolk.
This old bank is an owner managed business - Husband Lewis in the Kitchen and Wife Aga as the perfect host out front. That said, as your evening draws to a close, you are just as likely to be served by Lewis.
This is a tasting menu experience only. There’s a choice of the longer or shorter menu, and (if you so desire) a wine pairing. The menus change regularly so you can (as we do) go back regularly and get a new experience every time.
Lewis is a talented chef. Every course is not only beautifully presented but perfectly prepared. He mixes flavours and textures in a pretty unique way. We often find ourselves discussing the food, comparing the courses and ranking them on the way home. It’s pretty rare to find a restaurant where you are actually talking about the food on the way home - don’t you think?
The menu is based on local produce and sustainability - and they have their own allotment from whence some of the ingredients hail.
Our most recent visit was as good as ever.
The wine list continues to improve. There’s a good selection of wines at pretty reasonable prices.
In terms of value, this place is excellent. I think it’s probably the best value tasting menu I have ever found.
The service is very special. It’s an owner managed business so expect a passion for keeping the customers happy and an enthusiasm for the quality of what they serve. All the staff are super friendly and helpful. I think the fact that it’s a small dining room helps with the attention given to all their guests.
I cannot recommend highly enough.
My Tips
- Book early. This place fills very quickly. They only have 20 something covers.
- I think the longer menu is the one to go for. If the table next to you get a dish you don’t you’ll be really disappointed.
Absolutely incredible. Every course was a triumph; a really interesting combination of textures and flavours. Plenty of local and seasonal ingredients which were all extremely high quality. The restaurant is intimate without being pretentious, and the staff were very pleasant and knowledgeable about the origins of the food.
You won't be disappointed.
We had a really nice meal at The Old Bank, celebrating our mother's birthday. Nice relaxed atmosphere, friendly passionate staff and delicious food. We went for the larger menu and so glad we did. Only one of the courses was just nice, the others we either really nice or exceptional! There were 2 outstanding courses, the potato, truffle with seeds and the pineapple, greek yoghurt with fennel. There was no talking amongst us three over these two courses, just random sounds of delight and amazement with lots of head nodding. We were so glad we chose this place for a celebratory treat.
What an amazing restaurant. This gem of a restaurant is run by the chef/owner and his lovely wife, who does front of house. They offer a 5 course or 7 course tasting menu. The food is “to die for”, service is excellent and the wine options are good although not extensive. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. We dined there with local friends while visiting from Australia, and it was up there with the best we have experienced worldwide. Don’t miss your chance to dine here if you can, and support a small local business.
We had the longer sample menu with paired wines. Every course was beautiful - some of the best food I have ever eaten, and nicest wines drank. Already looking forward to going back!
Our meal was absolutely delicious. Our first visit, we will definitely be back. Recommend book in advance. All the dishes were my favourite. Staff were really knowledgeable about the dishes and were really friendly
It was simply amazing, absolutely delicious food accompanied by wonderful service. A truly sumptuous treat for my taste buds. My wife and I loved the whole experience. The food combined with the wine pairing was sublime.....highly recommended 👌
Great service and very tasty, well executed food made for a fantastic dinner with friends one Saturday evening at The Old Bank Bistro. The whole experience was faultless, we highly recommend this place and we will definitely be visiting again!
We've since visited again for Sunday lunch and had an equally excellent experience 🤩
Went for Wedding anniversary meal and had the lunchtime 3 courses for £22. Couldn't get in for the evening meal but still amazing. Started with Negroni Spritzer, Slow Cooked Beef for Starter, Chicken main course and Warm Stout Cake with Malt Ice Cream for Desert. Absolutely amazing food all washed down with a Rioja. Would highly recommend.
Absolutely stunning place to eat. Wonderful atmosphere, incredible staff and delicious food!!! What a find! Cannot wait too come back and try new menus!
