After researching good restaurants in Southampton I came across this restaurant. Trip advisor reviews were very good, so I booked. Starters were disappointing, mains average. My risotto was strange, with an overpowering flavour of cheese. Service was good but Felt it was overpriced for what it was and we wish we had gone to the Indian downstairs!

Following a 2 hour ferry delay heading to the Isle of Wight, we found ourselves with 3-4 hours to kill. Superbly positioned with ample parking close by, lunch at the Gatehouse 1833 was the perfect option. 8 of us dined both adults and children on the sunny terrace overlooking to coast. The food was fantastic and good value, however the service made the experience even better than we could have hoped for in the impromptu visit. Evelina sparkled with her friendly, warm and hospitable service, very attentive and very happy to help. James took customer service to a new level, polite, professional, expert on food and drinks, he made us feel incredibly special, we’re a bunch of well travelled people and we were all taken back by just how awesome he was, both these employees are wonderful assets, I hope they are well looked after. Thank you to you both, you made was we feared would be a painful and disappointing wait into an visit that we thoroughly enjoyed, well done and thank you again!!

We visited with 4 American friends who were shortly to depart on a cruise. I had been asked to find a place to eat and reserve a table. We arrived a few minutes early and were given a table with a delightful view. The Staff Members were attentive and we were able to order drinks promptly. We had a bottle of Prosecco, a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and a Pinot Noir. We had 4 of the special shrimp and whitebait starters, calamari and beef croquettes. For our mains we had 3 Halibut specials, a lamb rump, a steak and the lamb sausages with a side of slaw and a blue cheese sauce. We had 3 cheese boards, a lemon cake and a fondant for dessert and 5 lattes. With a couple of bottles of water our Bill came to a very reasonable £295. We added £35 tip and were pleased with the value. All the dishes were well cooked and nicely presented - the 2 chefs did really well. We had some complimentary bread and oil with olives. The seats were comfortable and we were able to chat throughout without raising our voices. There was a pleasant and relaxed ambiance. All the plates were cleared and everyone said how good it had been. We eat out a great deal and would be happy to eat there again. There were just a couple of small points that need to be noted. The lovely view was slightly offset by the brilliance of the sun and we needed to lower the blinds - but they were translucent; and there were rather a lot of stairs with only a single hand rail which made access very difficult for my wife who has mobility issues and might also discourage others. That apart we had a lovely evening and were generally impressed with the whole experience. The Chefs of the Restaurant on the floor below kindly offered to look after my wife’s wheelchair. There are a couple of reviews which might have discouraged us but our advice would be to ignore those. If they get a lift of stairlift we would be delighted!

We had a lovely day on the New Forest Tour bus via the Hythe Ferry and called in here for dinner. We had visited before but sat inside because of the weather but this time we were able to sit outside on the terrace. We both ordered the smoked haddock risotto which was very good although a little on the small side. My boyfriend ordered the cheeseboard and I ordered the deconstructed mango cheesecake both of which were excellent, we had a bottle of wine and my boyfriend had a port and I had a rum and coke (no brandy at all available). Service was very efficient (we were early 6pm) and there were customers just in for drinks at that time. It was a lovely evening here apart from Red Funnel's frequent bin emptying beneath, you would not notice this if you ate inside though.

The restaurant is ideally placed with a lovely view of Southampton Water on a summer evening from the terrace. The service staff were also very attentive and friendly in the spacious and comfortable 1st floor restaurant. That said, the lighting was a little bright and could be toned down somewhat. The food, while tasty, was overly complex and too expensive for what it was. The mains were very well presented if a little small by comparison to other restaurants. The choice of desserts was also somewhat limited. The lemon drizzle cake was a little dry with a strange mix of accompaniments including white chocolate “soil”, black current jam, and unfortunately not much in the way of actual lemon drizzle. For 2 people each having a main and dessert with a couple of drinks each, this came to £90 including tip. This just felt a bit steep when considering the competition. Perhaps the fact that the restaurant was empty when we left at 9.30pm on a warm summer Friday night speaks for itself.

We were expecting something special after reading the very good reviews, however, overall we were all disappointed. The restaurant lacked ambiance and was loud, very open plan and few soft furnishing to absorb the noise. The food was ok at best, service was a little slow. On the plus side, the view out of the window of Southampton water was nice, but from the other window was a lorry park. We. Won't be going back.

Restaurant is nice, decorated well, lovely view out to Southampton water. I have been before but a long time ago. Food was very good, nice flavours, well presented. It’s worth a visit.

I was in Southampton for a work trip, and I didn’t know where to go. I found gatehouse1883 the perfect place to have a dinner! James was taking care of me and I had an amazing and superb service! The food was delicious and well presented, I had calamari as a starter, the haddock risotto which it was something incredible good and the dessert at the end. With my glass of white wine I’ve spend around £34. Next time that I’m in Southampton I will definitely come back straight there.

Following a friend's recommendation my partner and I decided to visit for a romantic evening treat. We were not disappointed. the lamb rump was perfection itself, cooked perfectly pink, just the way I like it. My partner's steak was cooked to perfection, and the zesty slaw was an interesting accompaniment. Luckily, the fries can be ordered as an extra side, so there was no need to choose between coleslaw and fries. The mango and passionfruit cheescake was a perfect blend of zesty and smooth. We will definitely be going back, they have a nice summer terrace with a view of the water, so perhaps it will be a lunchtime trip next visit!

First time at Gatehouse 1833, a friendly well-presented waitress named Helen took care of us, the food was amazing, would recommend to anyone and will definitely be coming back. Thank you.

For an office work, few months back I visited Southampton, UK. As a genuine food lover, before travelling I was searching which will be the greatest place for my tummy . And believe me this was the dream restaurant, I will suggest from my travelling mind, to every one . The head chef of this restaurant is, respected Lee Burdenn who has come from a restaurant in Winchester called Chesil Rectory. I will suggest every one to must try the Terrace Menu. I was amazed after taking the fish starters. The taste of 'Light Bites' and 'Gatehouse Classics' are just marvelous . One must visit for his/her life time experience .. Cheers.

We`ve been here for a Sunday lunch- food was tastsy & fresh; staff was really customer oriented making our lunch a pleasant experience. We recommend this place for the view, food and lovely atmosphere. We had Duck liver parfait,Roast beef as a Main and Lavender and dark chocolate ‘lolly’ for dessert. All of them were delicious and the price was right (£ 22).

For those who are looking for an extensive menu that offers wholesome and flavorful food, Gatehouse 1833 does not disappoint. The Terrace menu delivers traditional British foods with a cheeky flair, the Halloumi fries are a must have for those wanting to expand their palate and enjoy something a little different. A quick 60th birthday lunch for my step Mum turned into a leisurely afternoon spent sipping G&T's on the terrace while the attentive wait staff took care of everything we needed. Overall, the experience was amazing and extremely reasonably price.

The widespread lawn, the awesome scenic beauty and outstanding aesthetic of Gatehouse 1833 are just romance conducive if you have come with your partner to have a relaxing time. The food is so luscious that you feel you are enjoying the taste of elixir. The service and behavior of the staffs are very customer friendly. You’ll love checking into this place again and again.

Having seen this place was almost the best restaurant in Southampton, we visited on Saturday night and couldn’t wait. At 7pm we were one of two couples in the restaurant. There was no music and the venue has no atmosphere or ambience. The nibbles were appalling, £4 for warm olives that were saturated in a bath of warm olive oil, not sure what the idea here is. The starters were actually quite good, light and just enough. We both had lamb for main it was ok, nothing bad really but considering the rave reviews very underwhelming. We really struggled with all the great reviews on this place, perhaps expectations were too high, but if you compare it somewhere like the Jetty for example, it’s not even close. Nothing bad (aside from the olives!) as such, but not what it’s cracked up to be; food is average, price is high and atmosphere lacking.

We had Sunday lunch at The Gatehouse. The service was quick and brilliant. Beetroot and goats cheese salad was awesome.

Gatehouse is definitely trying to bring their standards up to that of a good restaurant, and in honesty they are doing very well at this. The food was well presented with fresh, top quality ingredients and tasted delicious.
