This is a good place to grab decent japanese food, not too expensive, quick service. Its right opposite waitrose on lower ground floor and right next to exit so can be a bit busy and cold to sit and eat in especially with the exit doors opening and closing in winter months.
After walking past this place several times and struggling not to through my diet out of the window for all the amazing Japanese sweets and snacks on offer (just like all those really yummy ones you see on youtube), I have finally found a sushi lover Federica De Dominicis to join me in eating at Umai! This is essentially a little colourful convenience store that offers everything from tofu and rice, popin cookin DIY candy boxes, Japaneese china with adorable kitties on it, to freshly made sushi and hot food. Since discovering this little gem we have been back several times, with me always opting for the sashimi, which have been really fresh and delicious. You can taste that the fish used is a sashimi grade fish, the tuna and salmon just melt in your mouth. The sitting area is basically a part of a food court, and is small but efficient, the staff is friendly, and you get a good value for your money. I can see myself going back to Umai again and again.

A delicious range of Japanese dishes are served in this small space that looks like one of the family run restaurants that I used to go to when I was living in Osaka. From the sushi to the tempura and soba, to the curry, everything is prepared perfectly and deliver the original taste I'm fond of. On top of that you get the chance to buy the ingredients to prepare a lot more back home, with a variety to choose from that makes me so happy and poor at the same time. The atmosphere is absolutely authentic and brings back many memories for people away from home and those that have had a chance to go there; the staff is efficient, polite, professional and willing to help in your most peculiar enquiries. The prices are fair for the huge portions and the quality you are served. Worth more than one visit!!
Excellent, high quality sushi. You can eat in or take away, I think the eat in charge is a bit of a rip-off as the seating is not much better than the free seating just 10 yards from the store. Apart from that small complaint Umai is excellent. The sushi is fresh , you see them make it and pack it in front of you. Keep an eye out for the mixed sashimi boxes, the quality of sashimi is better than the usual sushi chain take aways. I did not try the warm food but it looked very good as well.
My go to place for a tasty takoyaki and salmon sashimi or tuna sashimi.
I wish that someday there place will be bigger like the one in white city. With more food options.
But still I am just glad that there is a japan centre near us.
Great convenient location right in front of Waitrose. Tables and chairs in a spacious hallway from the door and not too busy here. I love getting some snacks and hot food for a quick dinner. They do loyalty cards for over £10 purchase.
Fresh and nice sushi good that they have different options. Price a little bit high but worth it
Service was fabulous, the man was very friendly and helped us with the food and payments for eating in.
I had a Ramen Meal Deal which was served with gyoza and a soft drink. Food was delicious! They also do 10% student discount for purchases, therefore make sure to have it ready if you are a student!
I just used a cafe that is within this lovely convenience shop inside the Westfield shopping centre at Stratford. Loved the ramen, and my colleague was very happy with his kabocha pumpkin. The meal deal was reasonable priced, and i will return again.
White Natural Ramen with Edamame and Soft drink and also Tofu Teriyaki Skewer! Yum! Ramen was not drenched in sauce so I could actually taste the flavours, the Shiitake broth and mushrooms!
Good food. It is a little awkward to dine in Japanese restaurants served by other nationals. But very friendly staff. Good food
I went here yesturday (Friday 25/08/23) for my first time in Stratford , it is a nice store but very small store so cant get everything as what is stated on the website but did not affect me as I got myself nice green tea Mochi & small bottle of sake. Prices might not always be cheap as most products like the sake i bought imported from Japan but for £8.89 for small bottle sake a treat as not had sake for ages. Mochi was £2.29 .

Love this place, such good food and vibes, ramen place up top is awesome and can get things you wouldn't otherwise be able to in England
My favourite dish is eel on the top of the rice. It is always fresh cooking. But sometimes you need to wait for half a hour for it.
