Imagine taking years of experience at the heights of gourmet cooking, traveling the world and building a pathological desire to find the best freshest ingredients locally. Now put that into running a quintessential bistro in the Somerset market town of Taunton. Augustus is a must for anyone looking for a taste of class. Chef Richard Guest is a scholar of cooking, he is straight talking and has an amazing talent for creating dishes that pluck the culinary heart strings. Like the time I tried his Moules Mariniere et frites, I was transported to my first taste of mussels while staying on the North Sea French coast. His attention to detail with the accompanying array of ingredients also come through strongly whether as a starter (the bread and pate are to die for), a fabulous entree (too many to mention) or as a finishing desert (if you are lucky his rubarb trio is amazing , he is from Yorkshire after all)
What completes the experience is the wine selection and atmosphere. with such expertise and attention to detail, rarely seen in bistros of this size, it is no wonder this is a must for any serious diner.
taunton' best kept secret is no longer a secret.
As I live in Florida now, I can guarantee Augustus has left a long lasting impression and will be first on our plans when we return for a visit!
The best restaurant in Taunton by far. Exquisite food, top class service (Cedric is amazing) and a cheese board that blew us away. Our favourite place by far
Went there with my wife for 3 courses dinner in May. Great food, roasted duck and curried butter fish in particular were very nice and full of flavor. The atmosphere and decor was relaxing and cozy. All this came together with a attentive staff and service.
Highly recommend!
Would definitely recommend this restaurant especially for birthday celebrations :)
A truly wonderful experience. They adapted their menu for me, which is rare these days. I miss out on a lot of occasions with family and friends because of my dietary requirements, but they couldn't have been more helpful. The food was delicious! Super friendly, great atmosphere, and excellent service. Everywhere was spotless. Highly recommend Augustus restaurant. It was my first visit, but it won't be my last!
I loved this restaurant, the atmosphere was very pleasant and the attention was very friendly! I loved the food, the lamb, I think the paste lacked some flavor, but in general terms I rate it well!!
Myself and my partner managed to get a short notice booking the day of Taunton carnival. Staff really accomodating, and venue beautifully tucked away in the centre of town. Food amazing quality and certainly not something you'd see on an everyday menu. Two starters, two mains and an alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink came to less than £100... mind you we both probably had the most expensive dishes on the menu so really good value!
We would definitely recommend the steak tartar, not only delicious but a really good portion size too!
Will definitely visit again, and hopefully when neither of us are driving so we can both sample the amazing wine and port menu
Quotes of the night included, "excellent seeds" and "meat up to my ankles".
Augustus is a fantastic, elegant restaurant, hidden in the centre of Taunton. This is a high end eating establishment. The food was impeccable, but the service was above and beyond, from taking our coats to topping up our wine.
The food though, it's only a small menu, but they do it well! I had the cheese soufflé which was incredibly creaming inside and cooked to pure perfection, followed by the steak. Now, I'm not really a steak kinda guy, but that steak was delicious, and the duck fat chips were the cherry on top!
We didn't have pudding, but im sure that would of been top quality too. We did witness someone order cheese as an after dinner treat, and the selection was huge, and they bought it out on a tray to serve and slice for you.
Please, do visit this fine place!
Beautiful lunch for my mothers 60th. Cederic and Hannah were amazing and very attentive. Can’t wait to come back.
This is an excellent place to dine out. Went for my wife's surprise Birthday and they could not have been more attentative and accomodating for us. The food was excellent and the value is second to none.
Cannot speak highly enough of the staff, thank you.
My partner found out about the restaurant today in the morning while she was researching fine dining around the area for a blog at work and she found Augustus and instantly booked a table there to take me. Very spontaneous visit and oh my god I am so glad she took me here. The place is gorgeous, the staff are courteous and very professional. Made us feel like royalty and from what I heard around, they made everybody feel like that which was amazing. Starters were delicious and the food was exceptional but the dessert was out of this world! Our waiters were nice and sparked a conversation asking about us and whether it was our first time here. I am amazed I never heard anything about Augustus until today. After the dinner I said to my partner that this place should have a Michelin Star, which I found out after leaving the door that it does. I was also gobsmacked that we spent so little as I always thought if I ever was to eat at a Mitchelin Star restaurant I would cost and arm and a leg. Thank you very much to everybody, the staff and hats off to the Chef for this experience. Will be visiting again.
A great experience, A lovely setting, great team of people and a nice easy classy environment. The food is some of the best I've had in a restaurant. I will definitely be returning. Thank to all that we met, great work. I definitely recommend.
We had a fantastic lunch here today. Food was excellent. We had scallops followed by the lamb, both were beautiful. Service was perfect, nothing was too much trouble and front of house were very welcoming. Will definitely visit again soon.
