Never judge a book by its cover, or an Indian restaurant by its facade. The Bengal Lancer is a little gem of a restaurant; a cultural oasis amongst the Withernsea wilderness. The drab, tired exterior and bland simple furnishings do nothing to enthuse and warm you to the restaurant. However, the Bengal Lancer is a wolf in sheep's clothing. The Maitre D' and second waiter are very welcoming, friendly, pleasant and attentive to your requests. The food is excellent amongst the best I have tasted; including all the Bradford and Manchester curry houses that I have tried. We started with a couple of fresh poppadoms each, followed by onion bhaji and mixed kebab starters. The service was good, the plates were nice and warm and a dish/plate warmer was placed in the centre of the table. Both starters arrived sizzling on a metal platter and were served at the table excellent. Both starters were of good quality and the restaurant was now beginning to sit favourably with us and transform our original impression. A large pickle (3 dishes) tray and mint yoghurt sauce was presented with the poppadoms and starters this was complimentary and was warmly welcomed fantastic! We didn't have long to wait for our main course Chicken Korma, Garlic Chili Chicken Korai, Pilau Rice and 2 Tandoori Roti's. The Roti's were sublime, probably the best that I have ever sampled. My friend commented that her Korma WAS the best that she has ever had and that the rice was also nicely cooked. My Garlic Chili Chicken arrived steaming hot in its Korai dish and had an exquisite aroma. I waited a couple of minutes for it to cool, before diving in with my Roti curry heaven! The dish was intricately spiced with fresh green chilies and was top class. The chef is worth his weight in gold. As others have mentioned, they do not have an alcohol license. They do however sell a wide range of soft drinks and bottled water. They were quite willing and happy for us to have a jug of ordinary water and didn't charge for this. They are also more than happy for you to bring your own wine/beer/lager to accompany your meal. The Bengal Lancer is a great Indian restaurant and I would strongly suggest that you try it, should you happen to be in the area. We are back off there on Friday, in order to try a couple more of their dishes. I am sure that we will not be disappointed.

If you fancy something different then this is the place to go,but if you wish to have an alcoholic drink with your meal you need to take your own as due to some licencing laws they are not allowed to have it to sell to you but you are able to drink it there. The meals served here are excellent & just the right type for each individual (mild or Hot whatever suits)the service is excellent, great friendly staff who are always on hand to help at the raise of a hand. The food prices vary slightly but are all cheap compared to town prices.Cater for parties, multi bookings etc so anyone with a birthday coming up a great place to celebrate it.Definately woth a look

Really good tasty food, and very friendly, welcoming staff. Cheap night out, as you need to bring your own drinks!!...so can get a bit noisy, but usually a great atmosphere. Takeaway also handy, but i dont think they deliver?

Me and my family bought a holiday home in Withernsea last year and as Curry aficionado's we were eager to sample the local Indian Restaurant. having been to some of the country's top Indian restaurants including Mumtaz, Akbars of Bradford and the truly sublime Cinnamon club of Westminster London, we can be slightly hard to please when it comes to our Curry's. We first visited the Bengal Lancer June 2008 and the food was absolutely fantastic the staff were extremely friendly and welcoming the decor is very simple and old fashioned but clean and tidy. Its not Licensed which is a bonus to me as it means i can take my favourite bottle of wine and save a fortune on what most restaurants charge on alcoholic beverages. Now the Bengal Lancer is not in the same league as The Cinnamon Club but then not many are but for a traditional British style Indian restaurant its as good as any. The dishes i highly recommend are the chicken chat starter and the mixed starter the chicken tikka garlic korai and the lamb tikka pathia the naan breads are beautifully cooked and are freshly baked to order.

We had a takeaway from this restaurant last Friday while we were in holiday with the family in Withernsea. The food was so good that my son and his partner went in to eat as a couple last night, and my husband and I went in this evening. We would go again happily if we come back to Withernsea another time. And would highly recommend it to others who enjoy Indian food. However the restaurant does not serve alcohol so you have to take your own!

Weekend end away birthday tea, went to this place after reading reviews. Well all I can say it's as good as they say according to my wife best inndian she as ever had. Some really good choices all cooked to perfection at very reasonable prices. The staff are very attentive and a very good vibe. Word of caution please book first because it is a very busy establishment

We were on holiday and wanted a curry. The reviews were amazing, as was the food, hence the 5☆ review. We placed an order for collection, and when we collected it, the manager had a go at the young lads for getting a drink order incorrect. I understand the frustration, but to do this in front of customers and a full restraunt, I found this very uncomfortable, and I honestly had to keep my opinions to myself. The food was amazing, but treat the staff a bit more respectfully at ALL times. We all get thongs wrong sometimes.

Avoid at all costs. Arrogant non accommodating staff - as soon as you sit down they ask if you’d like poppadoms, we said yeah please , they asked how many; we asked for 2. They brought 4 out with a pickle tray, we asked for 4 tap waters and brought a bottle of water, £12 for a curry with 4 pieces of chicken in. Staff didn’t once asked how our meal was. When we went to pay it was £78 for the bill, to which we noticed they charged us £7.60 for the poppadoms. And extra price for the pickle tray although we didn’t get an option. £4 for a bottle of water, do not fall for the poppadoms. They are NOT free. Quality of the food just shocking. Chicken tikka starter was plain bland chicken with no flavour- when we paid we mentioned how the food wasn’t great to which they replied ‘okay’ - completely unbothered, didn’t ask questions etc. please don’t go there. They also wanted 4 people to have a curry each. We ordered a curry between 2 people , they came back trying to make us buy a curry each

Came here on the 11/8/23 for a birthday meal. Upon arrival we was early but was still shown to a table. The boss of the place took our order and the food came out hot and tasted amazing! Me and my son ordered chicken korma and it was lovely My wife ordered the chicken and lamb masala and when it came out there was no lamb. The waiter had misheard my wife but instantly sorted it out by bringing out some lamb straight away The only downside to our meal was we ordered garlic and cheese naans and they wasen't much cheese on them but apart from that the rest of the meal was delicious Would definitely come here again when next in withernsea
