my husband and i needed somewhere to rest our weary legs and they just happened to have some delicious wine and cheeses to help with our recovery
We had the food and drink pairing. Six glasses of wine accompanied by carefully chosen complementary meats and cheeses.
Jamie talked us through each wine and why it was paired with the selected food. He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We spent nearly three hours there but it flew past. The atmosphere was lively and at times quite noisy but it was Saturday night.
All staff were friendly and helpful.
Can’t leave this review without mentioning the apple crumble dessert that accompanied our pudding wine....YUM.
will definitely return if back in York
Disgusting experience, unsafe wine bar, threatened by a member of the general public, staff have zero control and did nothing to stop the issue. Nor did they intervene when abusive and threatening language was used. Very unpleasant experience and unprovoked. Would not recommend under any circumstances!
We’ve visited pairings twice now and had a fantastic experience both times. The charcuterie, cheeses and wine are all delicious and excellent value.
The service is great.
A brilliantly simple concept done very well.
Had a lovely meal. The sharing plate for 2 with matching wine. We couldn’t fault a thing. Loved the wine really enjoyed the blue cheese & Ibérico ham. Would highly recommend.
Great wine, food and service in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Always visit here when in York and will continue to do so.
We enjoyed pairings but felt the concept could have been played on more. Me and my husband are suckers for being sold things and we wanted to 'sold' the wine that matched the food, as promised by the website I guess. But it didnt live up to that. The food and wine were lovely, staff were friendly but something was missing ...maybe staff being more passionate about food and wine could have helped or more knowledgeable rather than saying it's up to you and what you like! We know that... But!?! Theres definitely nothing wrong with this place, you wont regret booking it. But it just lacked the experience we expected.
This place is cosy, friendly, value for money and generally amazing ! The absolute kicker for us was Megan the wine expert. Full of info, knowledge, and humour. Could not recommend more!
This is a wonderful venue for both food and wine from hosts who absolutely ‘know their stuff’!
The room itself is modern and fashionably industrial to some extent, with ambient house music and occasional live acts. Service is well-judged with very knowledgeable staff.
We chose two wine flight paths, with accurate tasting notes, and found both interesting and enjoyable with some new flavours.
We chose a deli sharing platter paying the supplement for a quite superb Iberian ham. This really was stunning in terms of the flavours of the cheese and meats. Wow!
Great vibe, very knowledgable about wines, attentive staff. The flight of wine was a fun way to taste some different flavours. Wish we had space for food because it looked amazing!
Excellent wines, good selection of bottled beers and interesting food choices. We shared the deli board and enjoyed choosing our meats and cheeses from their varied selection. Service was very good, knowledgeable and friendly.
I visit York couple of times a year and try to visit Pairing every time, the cheese board is devine, and if you dont fancy one of the cheeses on offer the chef is very happy to offer differnt choices. the staff are wonderfully knowledgeable and can recommend wines from the foggiest of opinions. I love it here!
What can I say, great wine, great cheese and well informed staff. I couldn’t ask for more. I love this place and will keep coming back.
Fabulous ambience, fantastic staff, superb wine, if only there were more wine bars like this!
We enjoyed several visits over a couple of days and each time was a joy.
Our favourite wine was the Il Faggio Montepulciano.
Called in for a board and wine after an evening at a service in the Minster. Table wasnt quite ready so we had a seat at the bar for a few minutes first, before being seated at our table. Carafe of chilled water was on the table without being asked for. Always a good sign in any establishment. Quality of food and drink was excellent as was the service. Reasonable price and a nice taste in background music. A good night all round.
We only spent the weekend in York but managed to visit Pairings twice, great wine, great food and great atmosphere, have a wine flight and either a cheese or meat platter, or go the whole hog and have "Yorkshire Platter"
Staff knew their stuff , about the wines and all the food they served, just perfect.
When we come back, and we will, this will be top of the list for a visit
When booking they made us pay a £10 deposit for our table. Turned up and table not reserved or ready !
Food was OK but owner didn’t engage with customers and didn’t even apologise when the £10 deposit wasn’t even taken off our bill !
I think she needs a few lessons in customer service and running a successful business !
Fancied trying something a little different and this was perfect. Six wines with food to accompany the wine, along with a brief bit of history about the making of each wine we tasted. Our host was fantastic, very friendly and extremely knowledgable. If you fancy trying something different and tasting some new wines, give this place a go!!
Visited this gem of a bar for a wine tasting with my aunt. Tried 6 wines (you can choose the colour and how many of each when you book) and with each we were given a mini lesson on how it is made etc. Really impressed at the range of wines we tried - some unusual ones in there that we wouldn't have normally selected for ourselves which was fab. Added food to the tasting and shared a really lovely veggie platter with some added cheese. Definitely book in advance as it was very busy even though only 4pm on a Saturday!
In York for the weekend and stumbled upon this place, looking for somewhere to get out of the cold. What a fantastic place! We had the Spanish board which was delicious. And a couple of red wine flights which is a great idea, giving the opportunity to try a variety of wines. Friendly and efficient service, will definitely recommend to others and will come again.
