Trendy and very busy wine bar on Castlegate. You will need to book ahead to guarantee a table. We enjoyed a carafe of a really nice SB but what we should have done is gone for one of their wine flights, three 75 ml measures of wine with tasting notes, paired with a trio of artisan cheeses, meats or mini desserts. Next time!
Great place good service, delicious food to accompany the wine (lots of choice, interesting wines, wine flights)
We’ve wanted to try wine tasting for ages so thought doing a wine and food pairing was the way to go. We had Alex for our experience and chose 2 x white, 2 x rosè and 2 x red all paired with cheese or meat. Alex explained everything about each wine and food choice which was soooo informative as basically we knew nothing. He even went over the making of the wine, origins and why wine is different shades etc. We absolutely loved it and would 100% go back when we return to York. It was such an experience not just a tasting. Loved it!! Xx
Great wine and platters. Absolutely brilliant place, only wished it was closer to home so I could go every week. Visited with my husband. We both had one of the wine tasters and enjoyed the french and Yorkshire platters. Both delicious
My wife and I booked a table and were allocated it for two hours on a Saturday evening. This was plenty of time to enjoy a relaxed meal. We had the tapenade (delicious!), Yorkshire platter and the French platter. We also ordered the light and crisp, and the aromatic white wine flights. The food was delicious, like so many others on here, we particularly loved the Yorkshire Blue cheese. The wine flights were very nice but in hindsight I wish we’d just got the bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc (Stoneburn?) we had when we arrived, which was lovely. We had a trio of deserts with a pudding wine flight, all of which were very good. Total cost of less than £100. Staff were very friendly and a nice atmosphere...once the loud and foul-mouthed people on the next table left at least. Would recommend and will definitely go back.
Really enjoy this place , great food, staff so attentive. Fab selection of wines.
The platters are always fresh and plentiful. Sometimes more bread or crackers is needed but staff always happy to bring more.
Rang to reserve a table, but couldn’t. They only book 50% of the covers and keep 50% walk-in available, which is fine. I tried to establish the chances of being able to get a table but got a confused response which was vague, but we decided to chance it.
Arrived at 6.30pm to find no tables until 8 except the window bench or sharing with other couples. Not really ideal if you’re out for a romantic meal so we opted for the window bench. This is fine for a drink, but not suitable for eating at all because of the height.
We were left with the menus for 10 minutes before our drinks order was taken, which then took another 10 minutes to come.
The Three Cocked Hat red is outstanding and worth selecting.
After another interminable wait our food order was taken.
We shared the Yorkshire and French platter, both exceptionally good. The delice des gaves charcuterie was the highlight of the french, with the Yorkshire blue cheese the best of the other.
We finished our first drinks and again had to wait another 20 minutes for the staff to realise, take out order and finally bring it over from the bar. We even had to stop eating because we’d been without a drink for so long!
Lovely platters and wine, but the experience was poor due to the service and tables.
I ordered the wrong thing!
Eating out in York is an embarrassment of riches. Pairings is a fabulous little gem.
We ordered a gravalax plate and the Yorkshire platter. Both were delicious but the highlight was the Yorkshire blue cheese drizzled with honey like they suggested.
I’m annoyed with myself though as I ordered a carafe of (excellent) Sicilian red before I noticed the lovely tasting trays of wine, they looked fun and I wished I ordered that instead. Oh well I’ll have to go back!
Best experience for wine, especially a few hours away from the kids! Thank you and would recommend pairings wine bar
The atmosphere is lovely, and the bar is nicely set out. We had a wine tasting paired with food. Excellent service a young man who I believe was named James, very knowledgeable about our wines, excellent selection of food paired with them and needless to say delicious wine. One person in our party doesn’t drink but ordered some food which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Be aware there are no disabled toilets, the toilets are down a flight of stairs which was a bit of a struggle for the disabled member of our party but in fairness we hadn’t enquired when booking.
Would definitely go back, loved the experience.
We booked a wine pairing experience - two white wines, two red and one desert. The wines were well chosen and interesting - especially with the tapas served. The experience wasn't rushed, it was great value and we had a superb night out. Thank you.
I had lunch with my sister and her family at Pairings in York yesterday and really enjoyed the experience. The ambience was lively and food was fantastic. We all had a "Wine flight' which consists of three different wines, I chose fizz, all with information about provenance and their unique flavour. We shared three different food platters with different cheeses, cold meats and pickles, gravadlax and hummus. Everything was delicious.
Having read such great previous reviews I decided to book here for my partner and I as we are both foodies who enjoy a glass of wine.
We were not disappointed.
We ordered the white wine "flight" which was 3 wines each accompanied by an item of food to match. We also ordered the deli platter to share which came with 3 cheeses (the Yorkshire blue was amazing) 3 meats, a pork pie and olives and breads etc. All of the food here is absolutely delicious (the chilli chutney was that nice I bought a jar) and I would highly recommend a visit. Beth our waitress was super friendly and the atmosphere here great. If I lived in York I would be here every weekend!
This wine bar is stylish and offers an interesting concept. You can book a table, which we did and is advisable as it gets very busy. We shared a deli platter made up with our choice of cheese and cold meats from well thought out and varied list. The food was very enjoyable. But, surprisingly we were a little disappointed with the wine list. The quality of wine was only average, but expensive. We like Ribera del Duero, but this one lacked the depth and flavour it should have had for the price. So, overall enjoyable and good, but could be great with better wines.
We found this place as we were staying next door at the Hilton and it’s brilliant. Staff really friendly and attentive and the food (tapas style) was delicious. Gets really busy but they call you and let you know table is available so all good. Wine selection great too, cocktails looked good but didn’t have one! Definitely go back again if in York again
Had a wonderful evening here! My friend and I came for a couple of drinks and food and loved it! The atmosphere was lovely and it felt cosy but not cramped. We'd been recommended the sparkling red eo started that which was strange but rather nice. The food we then had (veggie platter, salmon pate and 3 cheeses on a charcuterie bosrd) was absolutely delicious! Best sharing food we've ever had! Shared a bottle of the monastrell which was, again, delicious! After such an amazing meal I almost dreaded seeing the bill, but was very pleasantly surprised by the reasonable cost of it all. And the cherry on the cake was the brilliant service! Our waiter (I think his name was Alex) was wonderful! He made us feel so welcome, comfortable and relaxed. We could not have asked for a better waiter! I hope to return and will definitely recommend Pairings to my friends and family
Came here with the better half for the belated valentines meal as we both work in the industry!
Didn’t get around to booking a table (how dare I!?) but decided to chance it anyway, was greeted amazingly and very quickly. Service was impeccable throughout.
Was looked after by a young lad called Alex who’s service was next to none! Not to mention his wine knowledge was amazing!
All on all it was amazing night with quality food and exceptional service! Will definitely be popping back when me and the mrs get a night off together!
Thank you again guys! (And Alex)
Excellent visit. Wine and food pairing.
We were served by friendly and knowledgeable waiter. Each wine and food got explained in details, very informative.
Enjoyed every minute of the experience. Highly recommended.
Have been here a couples of years ago when we were last in York. Still very nice. Great selection of wines. Loads of people eating and food looked good.
I came to pairings last night with a friend and it was fantastic, plus very relaxing with their live music on that evening. Our waiter was excellent with very good knowledge on wine/helping me choose. I've been needing to buy a wine for a wine tasting event (black or gold label), I didn't know where to buy one from or how to tell if they are black/gold label. I really enjoyed one of the wines on the menu so asked about it and the waiter knew straight away it was gold label. I wanted it but was worried it may be quite expensive, the price to take away was very reasonable and I'll definitely be doing that again as saves postage costs buying from other wine shops etc :). The cheese was delicious too, thank you!
