One of us has acute gluten intolerance, so dining out is a rare and dangerous endeavor. That's why we were so happy and grateful to find 2 Oxford Place during our stay in Yorkshire. We ate their four times in less than two weeks, enjoying each dining experience. The menu is varied, offering panache without pretension. The baked goods are a highlight. Posh eggs and a gluten-safe full English breakfast are savory treats. Sandwiches to go are a highlight, on bread that does not taste like it has been pulled from the bark of a tree or scraped off the roadway the way so many other GF breads taste. Service is friendly and informal -- so this might not be the best place for a rushed meal. The owner is generous with information about gluten-safe baking and cookery. An older woman who waited on us was an absolute delight. We tried almost everything on the menu and rate it all highly. One tip would be to go with the fish cakes over fish and chips.
Need to say that I’m Not fan of GF food so for that reason didnt order anything but except dessert and I really enjoyed. Super busy , Impressed of service, feel welcome and like at home from start to finish! I will recommend to my Gf or vegan friends
Did a search for GF place to eat in York and this place came up, we knew where the location was so headed in. What an amazing find! The food is delicious, the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting and the staff are lovely.
We will definitely be back, Thank you 😊
Gave this a go today and were delighted with our order of roast chicken sandwich, homemade fish finger sandwich, chunky chips and a pot of tea. Both sandwiches came plates with freshly made salad and homemade coleslaw. Enjoyed every mouthful and my mum could not believe it that she could have ANYTHING from the menu! Thank you 2 Oxford Place.
(One smaller separate comment- the loos would benefit from someone with a pair of rubber gloves and some cleaning experience but they were just over right line of acceptable so it didn’t put us off)
The restaurant took cash only today so come prepared with some. Our meal cost £20.50 (2 sandwich meals, pot of tea for two and a side of chips-yum) which I thought was great value for what we had.
I have a gluten and dairy allergy. What a find, a restaurant that recognises that 100% Gluten free excludes no-one. We had the Southern Fried Chicken and defy anyone to notice the difference between gluten and dairy free and Southern Fried with gluten and dairy. Oh there were 3 differences, no stodge, no gloop and no worry about cross contaminationThis was excellently prepared, cooked and served food. Well done everybody concerned.
Another gluten free visit in York took us here for brunch, as it's a 100% gluten free cafe I took one for the team as only my missus has the gluten intolerance, but was pleasantly surprised when my poached eggs on toast came and I could hardly tell the difference, the other half had French toast and the only problem she had was she couldn't finish it all! I asked at the end where they sourced their bread from and was pleasantly surprised that they made their own and sold the bread mix as well, would happily come again.
We had lunch for two here. One coeliac and the other not. We both enjoyed our lunch.Salads in particular were good and portions are generous.Welcome and service could move up a notch.Great to be able to eat in a 100% GF Restaurant.
Came here for coffee and cake and was not disappointed. We chose this place as it is a gluten free cafe.
The coffee, tea and hot chocolate is brilliant as are the cakes.
The staff are friendly and polite.
I would recommend this cafe, and would go here again.
I am coeliac and finding somewhere that is 100% gluten free is heaven. We were visiting York for the day and had decided to have a breakfast first off. Found 2 Oxford place on the internet and went straight there for breakfast. Excellent. Service was very good, food very good and portion size very good. Saw several meals go by and all looked as good as the breakfast. Will definitely go there again when back in York. If you are coeliac then this is a definite for you. If you are not coeliac the food is excellent, do not be put off by gluten free, you will never know.
Tried this cafe again. Quite baffled at the vegan breakfast, why won't they buy in vegan gf sausages? Too expensive?
Why does the vegan breakfast not include toast yet the meat one does include toast? The vegan breakfast is served with roast veg...yuck.
Just don't like much of the menu and the home made bread is pretty awful really. Not a patch on the Leeds branch. Distinctly average
Just got back from my birthday weekend in York & as a coeliac I always find it hard to eat somewhere where I can 100% trust specially as I get really really sick within two hours of being glutened. My husband heard of this place and I was very excited to go for an all you can eat breakfast which was delicious! Can’t fault the food at all and only wish I lived closer
Monthly get together with girl friends for lunch.......my turn to choose venue! Always try for independent eateries, passed '2 Oxford Place' on bus route thought hey let's give this a try, revues glowing. Relaxed urban decor, I booked which had been suggested as at busy lunch time....glad I did! It's now 17:50 and I'm still stuffed after I had a Pastrami and mayo sandwich with large plate of green salad and red cabbage coleslaw. The sandwich was Devine the bread tasted nothing like i had ever had before......Go and try, you will not be disappointed.
Plates of food passing by we're full very large portions ! Only saw one member of Staff who was very pleasant. Glad my chosen venue of the month was a Hit one friend had Scrambled egg and Salmon on toast she too is still 'Stuffed' 😀
The food is amazing. The bread is so soft and delicious, almost unheard of in the gluten free world. The atmosphere was peaceful and the service was great too.
A group of 10 of us had lunch here recently. Although only one person in the group requires gluten free food, we all really enjoyed our food. The portion sizes were very good and a really good choice of food. The staff were friendly and efficient. There is a nice, small garden at the back with a few tables too.
Such a fantastic find, off the beaten track in beautiful York. Travelling from Australia with a coeliac 11yr old daughter, 2 Oxford Place should be bottled! Divine food, friendly service, gorgeous garden to sit in the sunshine and a happy child - what more could you want! Thank you for providing an anxiety-free lunch, knowing that everything on the menu was free from gluten and any risk of cross-contamination for my recently diagnosed child. They sell the flour for their delicious GF bread too. Will spread the word in Australia!
A late lunch in their garden at a picnic table. Being celiac is difficult to get real and tasty beer battered fish and chips. This place delivers and has two types of gluten free beer to wash it down. Delightful! I was stuffed or would likely have tried their cakes and scones. Well done! A 100% GF restaurant.
We made a purposeful visit for brunch after reading all the positive reviews. We were not disappointed. The all day breakfasts were delicious (meat one for hubby and a vegan one for me). We were even tempted to have cake to finish off. We really enjoyed it and will definitely go back.
Was looking for a gluten free cream tea and found this amazing cafe.
Started with a gorgeous home-made quiche and salad which was delicious, then onto the main event...warm scones with butter, clotted cream and jam. Just divine.
I visited 2 Oxford Place last Friday with friends from Canada, two of whom are coeliac. I had found the café on Trip Advisor and we decided to give it a try. They were busy with a member of staff down, and apologised immediately saying there would be a slight delay with taking our order. We didn’t mind the wait because it’s gave us longer to decide what to have and the fact they told us as soon as we walked in helped.
We knew we had made the right decision to go to 2 Oxford Place when our food arrived - not only was there plenty of food, it was absolutely delicious! It was well worth the wait and my gluten-free friends thoroughly enjoyed their meals too. They all had the fish and chips and a portion of chips with chorizo and cheese (they were hungry) and being vegetarian I had all day vegan breakfast with toast.
We highly recommend the café and I will definitely visit again when I am next in York whether I’m with GF friends or not.
Our family went yesterday as our youngest daughter found it as she is Celiac so was excellent place to visit
We had our Boston Terrier with us so he was allowed to go as well
The adults shared three portions of fish cakes and three portions of loaded chips
Plenty for the five of us the two children children’s meals of fish and chips and fish cakes
Place was lovely there is a nice seating area outside but we choose to sit inside
Very nice clean decor and friendly staff
We all cleared our plates and found the place very good value for money
We spend a lot of time in York so will be back
