Busy small restaurant where the welcome is friendly and the food simply amazing.
Yorkshire Lamb main was a feast to the eye and delicious. Prawns were a delight and the deserts well, don’t miss them as properly made and home made.

We booked in advanced and spent a great night. We were seated in the backyard room and it was cosy and relatively quiet.
The food was good and we went for a mix of seafood and meat.
I definitely recommend the banoffee pie that was really good.

Food, staff, all absolutely awesome. I think I just had the best Sunday dinner I've ever had, starter was the fish main shared, then 2 mains shared of Beef and Lamb, gravy was delicious and even the cheese sauce on the cauliflower was 10/10. A bottle of red. Now for a sleep.

Turned up on spec and received warmly without question. The food was wonderful and the service better. Will visit again, the 260 miles from home will be worth it. Excellent ☺️

We had a wonderful lunch today! I’ve often walked past this restaurant and have been tempted for years! So we decided to give it a try! We didn’t need to book and was able to get a table straight away. The staff were friendly and attentive. We chose a main and dessert each and weren’t disappointed. The food was fresh and steaming, and full of flavour! It was beautifully presented and was so delicious! You can’t fault anything! We will definitely be back again to sample the rest of the menu!!

Possibly the best food we have ever tasted! A real gem of a bistro.
Friendly, welcoming staff, pleasant bistro style decor, prompt service. All really good. But the food is the star....as it should be!
Good traditional bistro style meals but with additional flavours that are beautifully complimentary to each dish. All beautifully cooked. Black pudding with an oozing poached egg. Lamb leg joint with a tasty jus and beautiful salsa Verde....and the heritage beetroot was divine!
As for the puddings..... heavenly! We wanted to pick up and lick the plates!
👏👏👏to all the staff at no 8 bistro but particularly to the chef!

Absolutely amazing. The duck was delicious, and so was the lamb. Dessert selection was impressive and well done. Reasonable prices and very friendly and fast service. Will no doubt come back next time I'm in town! Can't wait.

This place was recommended by Rick Steves and it exceeded our high expectations. The menu is limited, but the food was FANTASTIC! Full of flavor and cooked to perfection. Service was also quick! Recommend the duck or the stake.

We booked in for dinner on Saturday night, and we were amazed at how great it was! Highly recommend for anyone visiting York.
We shared the pate starter and it was incredible!
For mains we had the rare hanger steak with the most amazing chips, and the grilled lamb steak with creamy mash.
Both dishes were absolutely delicious, and everything was fantastic value for money.

Great place, the food is fantastic and the price is amazing. The staff are very friendly, and are more than willing to help with your menu, or wine choice! The 5 stars I give them are well earned

We booked a table to have dinner here as there are only some tables, so it's advised. Really laid back atmosphere and having a cosy feeling throughout.
We had one waiter and 2 chefs in the kitchen. The waiter was all friendly and chatty. He even told us how to make some aspects of the dishes, which was really nice of him to share.
The dishes are beautifully presented like fine dining and just as tasty as they looked. We had the following:
Starters - Black Pudding and Beef Carpaccio
Mains - Belly Pork
Dessert - Ginger Chocolate Truffle and Banoffee Pie
This is definitely worth visiting!

A remarkable place, with great food and a lovy garden at the back. A two dish set of a starter and a main is £15 and it definitely fills you completely with a choice of freshly made goodies. It is not far at all from the Centre and the visit is worth your time!

Beautiful food. The Sunday lunch is the best around. Lovely place and the people are very friendly. Wouldn't go anywhere else in York.

A little gem just nicely tucked away from the centre but easy walking distance, I was recommended visiting and now I am doing the same...... great friendly service and awesome tasting dishes from a small yet plentiful evening meal menu.. a must book in advance place though, people being turned away on the evening ... that says it all !!
Black pudding & ham hock croquette starter was amazing, served with a perfectly cooked poach egg and grain mustard creme fraiche..
14 hour feather blade beef was melt in the mouth, served with bubble & squeak and horseradish cream and amazing beef jus, Pork belly with pork bonbon and fondant potato with quince was also amazing.
Desserts were no different, amazing and tasty, lemon posset with rhubarb compote and Eton mess ice cream was a real palate cleanser, while the dark chocolate delice was rich with the booze cherries and the most amazing licorice ice cream....,
Easily 5 star rating from me ......

Not the obvious place to take a small child but service and food was excellent and we will return. High chairs are available and the staff were very helpful. Thanks for a delicious lunch

Great service in a very beautiful and peaceful setting close to york city centre. And to top it all off, the full English breakfast with the homemade bubble & squeak hash browns was delicious.

We were fortunate to try the roast dinner on Sunday at the Merchant Adventurers Hall. It was well presented, tasty and good value! I heartily recommend it .... and the chocolate ginger and and apricot cake for dessert which we took away was moist and all that a dessert ought to be! 5 stars :)

One of our most memorable meal during our trip to UK was in this tiny little cafe around the corner from the main touristy attractions. This humble place serves beautiful food. The waitress was lovely and friendly. Love the horseradish cream and beetroot as the starter. Very aromatic and enjoyable. The risotto was damn perfect. The roast with gravy and yorkshire pudding was heavenly. It was the beginning of our love affair with Yorkshire Pudding as it was so inspiring.

Overpriced!. Over priced in my opinion, ok for a coffee, have eaten there on a couple of oocasions, thought that the food was unremarkable. Soup paticularly disappointing, bland, tasteless, could have made better myself. If the food was as appetising as it sounds on the menu and board, then the price would be no concern.

Great little find for those wishing to eat before the theatre which is just round the corner.
