Absolutely the best street food. I stopped by twice, first for the “Harry Trotter” Pulled Pork sandwich, which to my surprise, came with a sparkler tucked in for fun. Talk about a memorable experience. My 2nd visit was for the “Dick Turpin” Beef Reuben. Also a great sandwich with ample mustard and pickles. This is my go to spot for street food in York. Next time I visit, I’ll be stopping by.

Any sandwich that comes with a sparkler in it, has me at hello. Luckily the sandwiches aren’t just style over substance- god those guys make a great sarnie.
We got the Beef Barbacoa and the Reuben. Both sublime, made with care, thought and precision. Were they “cheap” sandwiches? No. Were they worth every penny, absolutely 100% yes. Stacked, flavourful, perfect. Will definitely visit again.

First time visiting Shambles kitchen, and I have to say they were some pretty amazing sandwiches. That certainly curb that hunger whilst we were rambling round the town.
Highly recommend calling in whilst on ya traves round York. Bit on the pricey side but you do pay for quality an freshness - everything is freshly prepared each morning. 😋
Only scored it a low atmosphere dude to no I door & out door seating, it's pretty much a grab an go place.
Michael Cortopassi
Excellent take away sandwich. Might be the best food we had on our entire trip to the UK

Been wanting to try this sandwich for ages now (the camilla) ever since I saw it on Instagram and wowwww it didn’t disappoint!! Packed full of flavour and tonnes of textures going on, so so good. Quite messy to eat so not one to grab on the go / if in a rush. Vegan heaven but they’ve got loads of meat filled options for the meat lovers too

I've wanted to visit for a while and finally got chance, the problem was deciding what to pick as each sandwich looks amazing. I went for a "Harry Trotter" pulled pork one and wasn't disappointed, the pork was tender and really tasty with a great smoked aftertaste. Salad was fresh and crunchy and the bread held it all together perfectly.
The sparkler was a nice touch.
Great service just added to the experience, I'm looking forward to the next visit.

Good experience, little late on the review tried the guy Fawkes sandwich last year on our trip to york! It didn’t disappoint, will recommend it - it was really busy on that weekend and we couldn’t get through the queue on day 1 so had to go back the next day! Plan your eating time accordingly to avoid the disappointment if you do have to wait in a queue..

A few different options, we tried the pulled pork sandwich and it was very tasty; fresh bread, tasty meat and sauce. Waiting time was about 5-7min. I will def go back to try the other sandwiches they offer!

It's easily the best sandwich in my whole life. Really! I ate two days in a role, and I could eat every day, always craving for more, hahaha 😆

If you are looking for a sandwich to beat all other sandwiches this is the place, yes the price is on the more expensive side, but you are in the center of a city and its good food. What else would you expect
You simply order at the window, you get given a buzzer if its busy, then you enjoy in the food in the streets the atmosphere doesn't get better than that.
Also some of the best pastrami I've ever had...

Having been meaning to visit this place for over a year, I finally made it to see Simon Long and his team at Shambles Kitchen. Had the pastrami sandwich and it was immense!!!! Would highly recommend this place for anyone visiting York. You will not be disappointed!!!

I was a little unsure about this place, my sister read reviews and said we had to go. The guy behind the counter welcomed us and gave us a glimpse of the hot food on offer. The chicken Thai green curry was absolutely gorgeous who would have put it in a box with rice with zingy coleslaw sour cream and hot sauce. I'd never tasted anything like it absolutely amazing. Cannot wait for my next visit to York !

If you are ever in York as a tourist or a local, head down the famous street the Shambles, and visit this place! I have never experienced a place that puts so much flavour into its products with so much love and attention for its work. Being a Vegetarian the Grillied Cajun Haloumi wrap is the meal to go for for me, and the soup is also delicious!
Adam Mouse-Zambrzycki
Had some great smoked brisket, slaw and tatty salad. Great to see the people so enthusiastic about food they love. A must have for meat or bbq fans. Thanks.

Best pulled pork sandwich ever, forget the rest have the best, well worth the trip from Australia to have it once again. :)

Terrible attempt at "street food", the place looked dirty (they should have a H&S inspection really), food overpriced and tasteless. Never again.
Amy Killingbeck
Friendly, polite staff and I sampled the tastiest smoky pork burrito at the York Food Festival!Would definitely visit again now I know they are available all year round.

We went in because the pulled pork smelt so good and the reviews looked amazing. When I realised they had a vegetarian soup I had to try it. It was the best soup I have ever eaten. Butternut squash with lime leaves and lemongrass (I would pay for the recipe!). Brought two extra cups back to Essex with us. I would travel the five hours back to have it again and my husband loved the pulled pork and is currently tucking into a burrito that he bought back (in a fridge). You have to visit if you go to York.

Delicious and tender pulled pork with rice and salad, just the sort of food i love. Thanks so much for making it gluten free for me.

Just the best food lovely staff, look forward to sat every week 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Delicious pulled pork roll. Looked just like in pictures and tasted even better.

Amazing food and customer service!! Would highly recommend if in York!!

The pulled pork was soooo good, great coffee, staff were lovely, will definately be back next time we are in York!

Great staff, great food and great location.. What else do you need in life!

Delicious and fresh food. LOVE the chicken shawarma! First time in York and experienced a warm welcome by the friendliest staff ever

Always good food

How adorable. Very small amount of seating but pulled pork is wonderful. I had pulled pork in a box with brown rice, quinoa, salad with the apples and ? Sauce. Mitch had pulled pork burrito.
The wait staff was friendly and cooperative. They explained everything to us.

At the advice of the the Cajun Halloumi, which contains couscous, gherkins, grilled red peppers, baby plum tomatoes, lemon-pickled red onion. It's my first time eating halloumi and I really enjoyed it. The other ingredients came together quite well, and a good change of pace from the eggs benedict I had earlier that morning.
Only regret that I didn't grab a larger size of the wrap or take a picture of it.Friendly service is a bonsu.

Thanks for the recommendation Yelp. Really great pulled pork sandwich on a soft roll with mayo and coleslaw. Pork was super tender and juicy. Service friendly, if a little gruff. Prices a little on the high side for the portion size, but this was a seriously good sandwich.
Nate V.
It was fantastic. Absolutely worth the visit. The pulled pork sandwich was delicious. The rest of the menu looks good as well.

Ran into this restaurant while getting lost in the shambles. Me and my wife both got the pulled pork with shambles mayo. What a great sandwich. A generous amount of tender and tasty pulled pork, in a large roll and complemented with a tangy coleslaw. The coleslaw does not have any mayonnaise, but has a nice quick to it. Would definitely recommend, 10/10. Good value, £18 for two sandwiches and two soft drinks.

I heard about the Shambles Kitchen when I was still in the US, and all the results were overwhelmingly positive. So I had to make a point to visit. I had already been a little tired from exploring York so my brain was being a little slow trying to figure out what I wanted to order but the staff was so welcoming and helpful! After we ordered and ate my girl and I were in awe at how filling, and fulfilling the experience was. This is how you do lunch on the go. Bravo!
Audra M.
Yes!!!! Omg seriously one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! I ordered the pork sandwich with the shambles mayo and a side of hot sauce! The combination of flavors was so refreshing! The slow roasted flavorful pork with the tangy slaw and soft roll was perfection! Only spending 2 days in York and I'm seriously considering heading back for another sandwich before leaving! The service is great too!! The two girls who were there were friendly and seemed genuinely happy that we loved our food!

Having lived in London for three years, I'm automatically suspicious of touristy areas. My experience is that the restaurants there are generally expensive, unfriendly and poor quality.
But Shambles Kitchen is completely the opposite, despite being on the most touristy street in York. I had the (very reasonably priced) pulled pork sandwich and it was delicious, with grated carrot and a hint of coriander (which added a nice twist to the classic pulled pork bap). There were three sauces available, but I opted for the hot sauce which was a good choice. When is hot sauce not a good choice?
Not only was the food great, the place was run by friendly, enthusiastic staff who made us feel very welcome. The restaurant is rather small, meaning that it feels very intimate and makes it easy to have a chat with these lovely people as you eat.
If you're in York and you want a casual lunch in a charming setting, this is the place.

I think this place should be cooler than 3 stars but I was just a bit disappointed. I came for a fairly late lunch and I think they were over serving people. The girl wasn't exactly friendly and seemed to really want me to make up my mind and leave. The soup I ordered was tasty - winter vegetable with lots of rosemary. And it was served with real sour dough bread which is a nice change from most cafes. The tables were all wobbly and tiny but in such a small space there isn't much they can do about table size. I suspect I just experienced the end-of-lunch low and this place is worth the visit at other times. I hope so anyway because the concept is definitely a good one.

Three words for you: Pulled Pork Sandwich.
Have it with the honey mustard sauce. This must have been one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long long time as I find it very hard to find good ones in the UK. We came back here twice in one day: a first time as a late second breakfast. Then again around 3pm for a late lunch. Both times we had the pulled pork one and the second round we also had a chicken mozzarella toasted sandwich/panini.
For £5, this is absolute great value (I bet in London they would ask at least £8). These are delicious, easy lunches. If you happen to be strolling around the old city centre in York and want a quick delicious bite, go to Shambles Kitchen!
Joy L.
We were here for a weekend and we found the pork belly sandwich so good we came back twice. The bread is super soft and fresh and the pork belly so tender... YUM. We also tried their wraps, almost as good. The smoothies are made right in front of you and are a delicious take-away as you go back out to walk the city. I wish this place would open in London, would be a great success!

Great and clean food for £5. This spot offers unique and healthy daily specials for a steal. It was great to stumble in and enjoy a delicious pulled pork sandwich and their daily special, Thai meatballs with rice and slaw. To top off the great food, the atmosphere of this little eatery is great...clean, aesthetically pleasing, and extremely friendly staff.
Carol J.
If you want a truly healthy decent clean, I mean really clean, farmers sourced food and you truly care about what you put in your body then this is the place for you!
I pop in here for made there and then in front of you fresh juices. The locally sourced farmers food is visible in crates in the shop, there's no supermarket chain store sources grub in here! The guys are cool, friendly and chatty and as far as I could tell their pulled pork sarny was the biggest hit amongst it's punters! But for me grabbing the freshest all green juice on the run that's made fresh in front of your eyes, well it doesn't get any better. Thumbs up guys!

A fantastic gem at the end of the York shambles, shambles kitchen is the best pulled pork in the uk! Situated in a small building with very tight seating, the shambles kitchen is very endearing. The staff are incredibly friendly and the food itself is the best pulled pork in the U.K., I highly recommend the mayonnaise sauce.

We stopped here for quick bite, very reminiscent of New York Bodega food was fresh and awesome had the meatball burrito wife had pulled pork this is definitely a must eat when in York
Abby P.
Not a ton of vegetarian and vegan options but the staff was so nice and made us a really tasty dish of soup and other vegetables and rice to round it out, which was very appreciated.

Six weeks in York and this is the place we kept coming back to. Their popular pulled pork sandwich is yummy and the daily changing soup and street food options were always delicious. Didn't try the smoothies because I got hooked on the Liver Cleanser juice (beetroot carrot Apple lime and I got it with ginger). It's a tiny place with loads of personality.
Tehlia N.
An amazing find with brilliantly fresh delicious food and fresh smoothies to match. The staff were friendly and more than happy to tell us some must sees in York and Leeds. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a quick lunch bite.

As an American, I didn't realize (yeah, that's a 'z') that there are so many smoothie places in the U.S. and that it really isn't a 'thing' in the rest of the world! I was walking the Welshman all over York, as it was his first time to this fantastic place when the Welshman suggested we stop for a drink as it was an exceptionally warm day. Exceptionally warm for Britain... In my head I was thinking smoothie or milkshake (think American, extra thick milkshake) because that's what you do on a hot day... so I led us to Xing. In his head he was thinking a pint of Stella at a pub... oops.
Anyway there was a lady standing outside with samples of two of the smoothies. I love free samples! The shop is small with some seats along the window and wall. The menu is not very large, but a number of things obviously appealed to me, so I decided to go with the Passion Ration: Passion fruit, peach, mango, 100% fat free frozen yoghurt, apple juice. The Welshman decided he would pass, but I ordered the largest size because 1) I'm American and 2) men always say, "No I'm alright", but they always end up sharing whatever you have!
The staff were very friendly and the smoothie was heavenly! It was just right... just the right amount of sweet and tart, it was slightly creamy, but not heavy, and definitely very fruity! I offered a taste to le Welshman (that's French for Welshman) and he had a sip and acted unimpressed. A moment later as we were walking, he reached for the cup and took a another large sip. This continued for sometime until I was tired of holding the cup and asked, "I think I'm finished, can I toss this?" He reached for it and finished it off... That was his way of saying that it was alright!
The only reason I didn't give it a full five stars is I would have liked a few more options on the smoothie menu or at least an option to create your own. However, I recommend the place to my students and the next time I'm in York, I'll be stopping in to try another smoothie!

I went to Xing a bit ago and it was pretty nice. They are located down the lovely Shambles and they sell a lot of healthy yummy things like smoothies, wraps, and juices. I had some kind of chicken wrap which contained some kind of spicy chicken and cous cous and it was delicious! Really filling but not too stodgy like a sandwich can be. I also had a strawberry milkshake type thing which they make with frozen yoghurt rather than ice cream so it's not as unhealthy. Again the milkshake was really yummy. Can't quite recall the price but I think it was slightly high end but not too expensive and certainly worth it. Would definitely eat there again.
