Lovely staff, always eager to help with the wide range of beers available. Theres plenty to choose from menu, starters, mains with sides and desserts.
We chose just to have a few starters so opted for spicy Mexican nachos with pulled port, garlic bread and onion rings. All was tasty, hot and not over filling.
Really cozy pub with good food and nice drinks/ale selection. We had the yorkshire pudding with roast beef (its a special, not always on the menu) and the chicken sandwich (fried, its on the standard menu). We ended up staying for QuizNight and had a fun time with that as well. Welcoming staff and friendly patrons too.
Great location, nice food, service was good, friendly staff. We left the over packed Fat Badger due to the number of people and noise and walked next door to the Hoke in the wsll. I'm glad we did. We got sat straight away, placed our order at the bar, and was served not long after. Nice, homely friendly pub.
Food was great, had childhood favorite, scampi, and steak pie.
Service was just fine, as one might expect in a pub, atmosphere was great proper English pub atmosphere.
Only downside would be food took a very long time to arrive but we worked in a rush so it was okay.

I was impressed with the cozy atmosphere of the pub. The decor was warm and inviting, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The highlight of the meal for me was the Yorkshire pudding - it was delicious and perfectly cooked. The portion sizes were generous and the prices were reasonable. Overall, I had a great experience at Hole in the Wall and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a cozy spot for a meal in York.
Great pub that has a unique history. Important to note, at this pub you order your food and drinks at a counter and don't have more formal service. It also gets very busy after 6:30pm, so I would recommend going early. We went here our first night in York, and they also ran out of yorkshire pudding after about 7:00pm, so again I'd recommend going early. The yorksire pudding isn't on the menu but is instead the special. I think be paid arround 13 quid for the yorkie meal and it was a very large portion and delicious. Great little pub!
Such a sweet pub. Cozy is the best way to describe the atmosphere. Had the Hunter's Chicken and it was very good. Also had a red ale that complimented all the flavors of the chicken. Staff were very pleasant as well. Will definitely come again when I return to York next year.
Cute pub. Live music on Tuesdays (open mic). Cosy pub and just about misses the tourist crowd as it is on the edge of the walls. It is a lovely pub in general with good staff and friendly regulars. There isn't any parking available nearby. They also have alcohol free beverages, too. One of them is actually decent! It's very close to the minster and very close to a main road so good to either start the night at and then wander into town or good to get a taxi easily from to go home.
