Me and my girlfriend stayed here for the night in Saint Catherines Room. Even though nothing happened, the room was very spooky and atmospheric. The staff were really nice and the location was great!
You can also stay in the front bar and drink(your own) alcohol when the pub has closed! (Picture attached)
Overall, well worth a visit!
Visited for a pint often throughout our visit to York. The atmosphere was great, staff friendly, and the pints varied and properly served. Very much enjoyed the squeaky floors, creaky doors, and all the other bits you hope to find in a pub over 500 years old. Would totally recommend. Thanks for having us 🙂
I just came across this pub after being in other pubs in York. As soon as I walked in the atmosphere was brilliant as opposed to any other bar I had been in. The live music was spot on and the clientele were so friendly. There was a table of extremely loud Americans but that is par for the course! All in all a fantastic place. Last night in York tomorrow so I know where I’m heading to.
Another one of yorks best pubs, a very traditional pub which gets quite busy but you can always get a beer pretty quick. The food is supposed to be lovely however I’ve not had the pleasure of eating here yet. The pub does have an outdoor area which is quite nice too.
One of the more popular pubs so does get busy.
haven't stayed in the rooms, but the bar and staff are really nice. very atmospheric gave them 4 stars because hadn't seen the rooms. they responded saying thank you for the review. so I've changed it to 5 star. Even after service from this crowd. you deserve the 5
Brilliantly creepy pub. Love the haunted atmosphere and the decor made it perfect. Sign on the outside detailing the different ghosts sighted. Beer garden was lovely and staff were so helpful.
Loved that it’s a stonegate venue as I was able to use my staff discount 😂
We booked the Shambles Room that has a view of The Shambles.
Large room with beautiful antique furniture. The bed was extremely comfortable with good pillows and blankets and everything is kept clean and tidy. We had a very comfortable good night sleep.
The bathroom was amazing with a large walk in shower and freestanding bath. They provided bath soak, shower gels, hand wash and moisturiser, it all smelled wonderful, we had such a good pamper.
The building is very old, full of character and history.
The bar is great also, with friendly staff, live music and a large well kept beer garden.
Twice in the week we were here for food. Great both times, burgers were great. A good location for before or after heading out into the centre attractions. There’s obvious skeletons and ghost things dotted around the pub and death masks etc making it a bit spooky, but this is no gimmick place, it’s been there since around 1503 I believe, a genuine piece of history, and an interesting venue to those with a keen eye, evident by its uneven floors and ancient wonky walls. A local told us a few compelling ghost stories. It’s not just a pub with good food, but an experience, for those who can see past the surface.
I don't know about haunted, but the beer they have on tap is brilliant. The bar staff are friendly & welcoming, and to be honest you can't beat it for atmosphere. Was a brilliant (if unplanned) visit for a quick pint. A must for a beer if you are in York.
One of the best traditional pubs in York, with live music regularly and a great pint of Guinness, definitely somewhere to visit on a trip to York.
