Great cask selection and a brilliant choice of ciders. Very friendly place and the landlord was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Had some live acoustic music (at a very mellow level) on the bank Holiday Monday we were there. Overall a great place to visit when in York.

This is such a great place from Back Sheep Pubs. Very cosy and relaxed. Great beer and great decoration. Wish I lived here to come here often.

What a cracking Friday night session. Five fiddle players, three guitars, accordion, tin whistle, washboard player and fabulous singers. Like Fisherman’s Friends on the lash. Weekly event apparently! Worth the train fare from London.

Situated close to York's glorious Minster, I found it a very pleasant bar to shelter from the rain on a quiet lunchtime. Though it is not intended as a meal provider I always find it disappointing when a pub only serves crisps etc. & a few people came in and immediately left due to no proper food. Still, seems like a good venue and live music evenings sound like they're worth a visit.
My pint of Black Sheep Bitter was in good condition and the lass serving was helpful. As with most pubs these days I couldn't afford more than a pint or two due to the eye-watering cost, which isn't the pub's fault - in most cases.

My husband and I were visiting York on Bank Holiday weekend. We were drawn to this pub by the sound of live folk music. We stayed for hours watching and listening. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed, and the bar staff were brilliant.
We had a memorable evening.

Beer very good staff pleasant and friendly sadly no food. Could do with old fashioned pub food on a lunch time like pie and peas ploughman's baked potato, sandwiches etc on a lunchtime. 2 couples came in while we were there "do you do food?" Sorry no and they didn't stop. It's not rocket science. I worked in the licensed trade for over 40 years and I can spot what's going wrong.

Nice place for a drink as it's not too noisy. Good gin selection, I'd recommend the Black Sheep gin, superb.

Came in for a few quiet drinks and it was great, nice atmosphere, friendly staff and plenty of cask beer to choose from.

Stopped here an imbibed in a couple of pints and a large gin for the good lady wife.
Barman was really friendly with good knowledge of all the available drinks and spirits etc.
Deceptively roomy inside with a nice pub atmosphere. Ale I had (Guzzler) was spot on and not overbearing. What I would call a good "walking" ale, not too heavy.
The missus had a fruity gin who's name I forget but she really enjoyed it (double of course). Great pub with a good atmosphere. And no horrible loud music.
10/10.

I loved this pub. From the moment my friend and I went in we were made very welcome by Simon, the Manager. We were also really pleased that they sold Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio, as much to our surprise, not all the pubs in the centre of York had this. We met several of the locals who were also chatty and friendly and really made our afternoon. So much so in fact, that we went again the following day. We were sorry that we weren't staying long enough to spend an evening there, as the entertainment looked fab. Next time we visit York, we will definitely be paying a visit. Well done Simon on running a really special place.

Visiting York for the first time. Everybody we've met here so far has been lovely. We called in with the intention of have a few drinks, however, after being served by the rudest lady I've ever encountered, we decided to finish our drinks and move on. We did speak to a very nice young man who said the manager would not be back until 8pm. He apologised for the level of service we'd received and informed us that the lady's name was Rosie. I would not recommend this place.

It's become a bit of a tradition now that every time I visit my boyfriend in York we always head to the Three Legged Mare. The first time was back in early March when we were lured in by the sound of live violin and accordion, this is what a real pub should be like. Friday nights are the best with their new Folks band, had us both beaming from ear to ear (especially on Friday 01/04 when I heard "I wanna be like you", Jungle book). The barman and lady were both friendly and welcoming which made our night even better. Cannot wait to come back again :) *** P.S Great ale! Junie & Martin X
