We just had a mixed grill and a noodle platter , all food was good quality meat , cooked a treat , staff were friendly, we did not get pestered after a mouthful of food if the meal was okay . nice decor all clean and comfy , highly recommended for an excellent value for money place to eat , and the Guinness was lovely and cold , will use again next time I am in York
Don't usually feel compelled to write such reviews but feel the staff here went the extra mile to make our recent meal here enjoyable. If you are after haute cuisine, look elsewhere, they provide a decent, good value, hearty meal. On visiting this bank holiday weekend, Saturday at 6pm, the place was absolutely heaving. Explained we were in a rush, they apologised and informed us of a 30min wait. Went ahead, ordered, meal arrived 15mins later, piping hot. The waiter, Jack, was exceptionally friendly & courteous, a real credit to the place. He explained that it was the kitchen staff that were to thank and was prompt to stick my daughter's 'Van Gogh' Easter masterpiece up on the wall to which she was delighted :-) Top marks!
Amazing pub, popped in on the spur of the moment for something to eat. Staff are attentive friendly, and nothing is too much trouble. Excellent customer service checked with me for allergies and checked with the menu specifications.
Food came out piping hot. Staff checked in to make sure everything was satisfactory.
Parking at the back, too, as well as travel Lodge. That's a bonus, too. Lovely atmosphere even with a match on. I even got some work done!! I'll be back. Thank you so much 😘
A nice enough pub with decently priced drinks and food. It's a chain pub and I wouldn't' say it's anything special but a reliable place for a quick/cheap bite to eat or a couple drinks. The staff are very friendly and there are usually some sort of food deals on the go.
On initial impression there doesn't seem to be much parking but after confirming with the staff they said it was fine to park in the Travel Lodge car park behind the pub, as it belongs to the Black Bull apparently.
Good value food and drinks, friendly staff, shoutout to ‘Shells, attentive to ask about food allergies. Will be back!
We come here often. The food is always consistent in portion size, quality and quantity. The service is always friendly. Had a lovely server called Ellis the last two times we ve been. Background music is playing. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Will be coming here again.
Haven't been to The Black Bull in over 30 years, expected it to be quite an old man's pub still but was very pleasantly surprised. Really nice atmosphere, good and busy. Food was excellent and really good value for what you get for a family meal. Nothing to complain about, would certainly visit again for a meal and happy to recommend to friends.
Amazing place to eat. Highly recommend. Clean. Really friendly, happy staff. Clean. Great prices. Food was immense. Ordered a mega mix grill and a loaded surf and turf. All piping hot and sizzling. It tasted delicious. Was perfect. If you visit York you must come in here for a bite to eat. I would book as very busy.

We had the 2 for £11 option. Although the choice is rather limited, the fish and chips we had were really good and the portions excellent. Not the place to go if you’re looking to impress your date but perfectly acceptable for a pleasant meal.
First time we've been to this pub. Staff pleasant and helpful. Food was lovely and affordable. An added bonus was, the day we came there was 40% off main meals.
Glad we started going here to eat again after a while away. Food has been excellent every time. Wife always orders a steak which is cooked perfectly. Our waitress Kerry was particularly great on last visit. She was clearly very busy but was friendly and attentive, even made the time to check up on us a couple of times.
