This was a lovely bar for drinking, with the design of the walls harboring York's history! Flags help decorate and the counter is well-presented, with lovely staff too. I felt lucky they had the rarity of Mango cider and this was superb, which I had at comfy old-school seating!

Popped in for a quick bite whilst staying in York for the night. Busy pub but not uncomfortable. Lovely view over the river. We both chose the bacon & cheese burger with chips, very tasty & well cooked burger. Good value for money.

Every time me and the family come to York we always pop in for some food and drinks.
They have amazing, drink, prices and great customer service

We visited on a Monday lunchtime so the place wasn't too crowded. Service was good and the food was also good (although they had no subs which was disappointing). Had a pleasant chilled out time there. No parking (as it's the centre of York) but easy access toilets and plenty of seating.

2 for 1 pitchers are well worth it and so good. We got the berry blush and the woo woo. 4 pitchers were more than enough to share.

Came here for some food and a few drinks for my wedding anniversary. Cheap & cheerful.

Came with a friend for lunch. The 2 ladies serving us were absolutely fantastic. Attentive, friendly and the best service. Beth and Kellie thank you !

Lovely place, a shame they don't have a beer garden on the riverside. They were so helpful when asked about gluten free food for my sister. The bar person consulted the catering staff and gave her concise information.

Great range of pub food to choose from. The breakfast menu is good, and I thoroughly enjoyed the cheese, bacon + sausage in a bun with 2 hash browns on the side, it was yummy! Recommended!

Me and the girlfriend was in need of a no nonsense traditional English breakfast and hidden away down an alley was a yates. A true hidden gem, big open space with plenty of seating, service was swift and the food and drinks was lovely. Thanks to Tyla and the team we’ll definitely come back

Lovely lunch in here on a quick shopping trip. Great atmosphere due to lots of race-goers and venue was busy but spotlessly clean. Good value for city centre, we loved the burger & drink for £10.49.....highly recommended 👌🏻

Called in here yesterday after first going to Cosmo but left after seeing the quality of the food on offer... Yates is just over the river and the menu looked OK and affordable. It was very busy, which also meant it was very noisy, but we found a table in a corner which was much quieter. We ordered food, the girl behind the bar was pleasant and we only waited just under 10 minutes for our food. I had the Mexican Pasta Bake with breaded mushrooms and hubby had Mixed Grill. The food was lovely, the meat was cooked well without being dry or tough and i found the bake very tasty. If there was anything negative to say, it would be there wasn't enough of it!! Followed this with the Salted Caramel Chocolate Slice which was absolutely divine!
Overall we found the staff friendly and the food great

Just been away for a weekend to York and as we didn't know the area we opted for breakfast at Yates as it'd be cheap n cheerful. Cheap Yes, not cheerful! We ordered 3 pots of tea and a coffee to be told there was a 30 minute wait for a hot drink. As it was busy we agreed to wait. We also ordered 4 English breakfasts. 2 of them came without any eggs and every breakfast was cold.
We had eaten our breakfast before the drinks arrived which was 1 coffee, 1 pot of tea n 2 cups of tea. We sent the cups back with the waitress and explained we had ordered pots. Her face was a picture! Great customer service skills... Then the "manager" brought us 2 cups of tea... by this time we couldn't be bothered to wait any longer so drank up and left.
Before we did leave, we used the toilets and they were disgusting too, which another customer pointed out to us as well whilst we were in there.
Wouldn't eat there again.

Went for breakfast as we always go there. When the breakfast came was disappointed because the portion size was smaller. The sausages was very dry and the egg yolk was hard. On the plus side the waiter service was good. Polite and helpful.
Anne Hetherington
I ordered food it was awful ordered hunter chicken it came in a plastic bowl loads of oven chips and strips of chicken I asked staff why it wasn't a chicken breast, they replied that's how we serve it, so we ended up with our money back, and the lass I think she was management had a serious attitude, because without customer she wouldn't have a job!! When I went to the bar to get another drink she refused to serve me her excuse was I was to drunk, well this pub was my first call of the train and was my first drink in the bar !! I was disgusted with her attitude and I would never go for a drink there again !!

Had champagne, was disappointed on second bottle that it wasn't chilled, nor was the subsequent processco. Burger was nice, chips ok, onion rings ok, quiche nice tasting but very small portion. Cocktails were very disappointing. Taste the berry had no skittles on as advertised. The Long Island iced tea was no more than cheap tasting vodka and coke, there was no other taste - horrible! Female staff member that served food was lovely and friendly. Lovely view over the river and we had lots of space, felt very relaxed.

This is a very generous 2. I have never been to a Yates that was so dirty. Plenty of staff so why not have someone cleaning up. There was toilet paper all over the floor (in the actual bar, not the toilets) and no one collecting glasses. We came in early evening on Saturday and couldn't move the floor was that sticky. Oh and it doesn't cost much to put toilet doors back on. Disappointed because york in general seemed a very tidy place.

was totally unimpressed with the food here and was not well after i ate, I had jacket potato with tuna and cheese and the tuna and cheeses were like glue and the potato was soggy as if it was microwaved and full of salt which was disgusting and as for the side salad that was unreal it was lettuce and that was it wasnt even cold was luke warm as the plates were in the microwave! The girl I was there with had the same as myself and said the same thing, except she had coleslaw which none of could eat as that was lukewarm and horrible! poor excuse for a place that serves food, won't be eating there ever again!

Me and my little sis went for lunch wrap was nice but we ordered pot of tea took ages to come we had to ask for them in the end but staff apologise over all not bad place

Just popped in for an afternoon drink with my hubby only to be refused service because he was wearing cotton shorts or as the bar lady stated 'joggers'
Turn round to see one lady scoffing her lunch, another stood against the pillar and another chap enjoying his drink further down the pub all in full length joggers. Would have also thought the door security would have adhered to the no jogger policy & not let him through the door in the first place.
Think your staff need educating on what 'joggers' actually are!

Visited twice whilst visiting York, first for a drink and second for breakfast. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were of a good standard for the cost and we got a free cocktail as the staff were increasing their cocktail selection and needed a guinea pig !
Caroline Hayward
I like the service all thou me and partner disabled and the toilet had few issues we reported it 4 times before nothing got done so that's not on it's health and safety we reported again so will keep an eye on if they do the work I will be bk to check

Food was ok, wanted 2 for 1 cocktail, even though menu promoted it, was told not the case. Someone in changing air con vents while we were sat eating. The girl that served us her nails were disgusting and had so much muck under them. Wouldn't recommend!
Liam Hanson
Canny good to watch the match, didnt get served for my drink by the bar staff tho. They all just looked at me

Now, I'll usually avoid Yates bars like I would a Chugger with leprosy, but for the sake of a quick lunch, out the rain, and with a nice view of the river, why not give it a bash. And ye know what. It was pretty nice. This one is situated alongside the River Ouse, so if you're lucky enough to get a window seat you have a beautiful view of the waterside and bridge.
They do various meals in their 2 for £8.95 deal, and I was sure the mother would plump for her usual, scampi, and chose a burger accordingly. No. This time she wanted a chicken wrap, from the lunch and a drink deal. Fine! I'll have the steak and onion panini. Oh yes! Great choice. Needed a bit of sauce, or some such, other than just cheese, to bring together the steak and onion, but it was cooked perfectly, and very tasty, with not a bit of fat to be found. I had a red wine to match, and it was acceptable for the house special.
All in all it was a not bad place to get a spot of lunch. You wouldn't catch me there on a night out though! Bomber shots and pop music just ain't my scene.

Decent enough place. Very big. Big bar. Lots to chose from and usually have offers on for drinks. Does food too.
Mark H.
Very very busy, 30 minute wait for food, but cheap and cheerful, a nice alternative to all the Wetherspoons springing up all over.
Two meals for £8 is well worth a visit, especially with a decent bottle of chilled rose for under a fiver!
Lisa W.
Gross and very dirty place! Tables were grimy and dirty, floor was nasty. They put a ton ice in the drinks and have rude staff. Food, so so to not so great. The only good thing is the location.
pinkystan
There are much nicer beer gardens to sit in, but the prices are this place's saving grace - really really cheap. I like a bar where they charge 25p for a lime and soda - woop!

Young cheap and cheerful :)

its a very lively, pub full of some rather strange people? like the odd fella you always find in certain places dancing to the music thats in his head!
atmosphere is always good, but it gets that packed, and the floor can be gritty with broken glass towards the end of the night?
a little to rough and ready for me, to relax in, as its normally full of large groups of men and women on the pull. and its perfectly lit, by the struggling 40watt bulbs dotted about the pub? but it depends as at other times they replace it with a 100 watt bulbs. it used to be considered as the place to go, now no one really mentions going. (luckily)
they do do food, and its standard nothing that impressive. had a breakfast here once. they do meal deals at times as well as drink deals.
the toilets are basic and clean, though on a weekend, avoid! unless your wearing wellies! and somebody elses at that!
photo looks like its of the back entrance! as the front entrance is big glass doors

Young, clean place. With great yummy burger at good price. Good for all ages from 1-45.

Yates's is also quite a popular place to go, particularly as there are always various different drinks on offer for reasonable prices. There are plenty of places to sit so you can sit and chat with your friends or whomever you may be out with, and not need to feel you have to shout over one another as although there is chart music playing, it is not at noise level that means you cannot be heard.
