I agree with Jay Raynor's review re: the Pipe and Glass, that one Michelin star is a fairly arbitrary award. Our evening meal on was good but not exceptional. It certainly wasn't good value for money. We have had better food at non-Michelin starred restaurants, such as the Oak Bank Hotel at Grassmere, or The Cross at Kingussie. The Pipe and Glass dishes are underwhelming both in terms of their limited flavour range, and their average attention to detail. My beef hash starter tasted of, well beef hash, and was barely saved from monotony by a few spots of rhubarb chutney. My partner's home cured gravelax starter was refreshing, but too steep at £15. Our mains of guineafowl breast were ok, if a bit overcooked, as was the sprouting broccoli. There was little else on the plate, but a small pile of what tasted mainly of raw garlic. Neither of us ate that. Why would we? If one doesn't order sides, at £4.50 each, one could leave hungry. There are puddings, of course. My wife had cardamom flavoured rice pudding. The rice was undercooked. The five kinds of chocolate is bizarrely large. I doubt any normal person could stomach all that. So why prepare something so rich, so large? And why prepare mains so small? We had a mediocre bottle of house red, expensive at £20. The home truth is that the chef is neither a master of flavours, nor a stickler for detail. The service was polite and friendly, but we were served by so many different individuals, even that was rather spoiled. As for the Baron de Sigognac VSOP Armagnac: my suspicion that it was a cheaper substitute is supported by my later research. I guess a Michelin star can be seen as a licence to hike prices. I hope and expect that this Michelin star will quickly be lost. If so, the proprietors may be better able to focus on quality and less on price.

I have been meaning to visit this not so secret hidden gem for years and after today’s lunch I’m not sure why I haven’t been sooner! Popped in for lunch on the off chance that a table would be available for lunch. We were seated immediately in the bar near a cosy fire. The atmosphere is wonderful: chatty, cosy and rustic without being forced or gimmicky in any way. We decided to opt for a 2 course lunch but could easily of had a starter too! I had the deer with rhubarb from the specials board and my partner had the fish pie with greens and picked salad on the side. Both meals were sensational and we have been lucky enough to eat in some fantastic places. The ingredients were fresh and the dishes were definitely prepared with care, love and attention. The topping on the fish pie was delicious! For dessert I had the pistachio baked Alaska which was one of the nicest desserts I have ever eaten and my partner had coffee, petit four and macaroons. The service was underrated, relaxed yet efficient and exceptional. The staff were super friendly and made us feel relaxed and welcome from the moment we walked through the door. The wine list looked so tempting and they also have their own gin selection. We are now definitely going to be regular customers!

My husband and I visited for valentine's Day and stayed over. Our visit was nothing short of perfection, the room was exquisite it had the most comfortable bed in the world, beautiful decoration and a magical "starry sky" effect above the bath. We had the sweet treats in the room to enjoy before our meal which were absolutely beautiful. As for the meal, everything was cooked with such precision and was devine. I myself couldn't manage a dessert however you do get an incredible mini selection of fudge and truffles etc. We were sad to leave in the morning. We will definitely be returning.

We visited The Pipe and Glass on a Thursday evening with 4 friends. What a superb restaurant to dine and relax. The ambiance and decor is spot on, the service second to non and the foot delicious. The restaurant was full but the service was slick and just the right speed, we were not rushed off our table and we have booked to return once again. Price wise you pay for what you get and it is worth every penny. The wine list was excellent and the selection of Gin's top notch.

We called on a Saturday lunchtime to have a meal in the bar and were pleased we had arrived early as the carpark was already almost full at 12.15pm! There is also a restaurant which takes bookings and at lunchtime the menu is the same. This is Michelin starred but not pretentious and although not cheap it was excellent and we would definitely return. I had a marinated salmon starter on the specials board and my husband had a steak sandwich and a portion of fries. The staff were all pleasant and there was a good choice of wines by the glass. I could easily have had anything from the menu and all the food that we saw other diners eating looked really good.

The food & decor here are wonderful. Hope to visit in the summer & eat outside too. Delicious lunch, excellent starters then the Wild Halibut with an oxtail sauce was amazing. Attentive service throughout. A little disappointed when someone else received birthday candles in their dessert & my husband didn’t even though I’d mentioned when booking that we were visiting for his birthday. Overall a fantastic experience which we will be repeating before too long I hope.

A rare gem! Food at its organic best. Super friendly staff ~ Really patient with children & food allergy considerations. I took American guests ~ they loved it!! Only one comment ~ more mash for the Sunday lunch por favor - Think most would agree that mashed spuds are a fave staple for a roast beef lunch ~ having a small spoon full as a fancy decorative smeared on your plate is NOT satisfying even in a posh nosh eatery. More mash. Bang table . More mash. Thank you!

We've been waiting a while to visit the pipe and glass, fortunately we managed to find a suitable date to celebrate our birthdays. The restaurant is informal and relaxed in a lovely old building with lots of character. The food was delicious, beautifully presented but generous portions, and we had a great bottle of house red which was very acceptable and only £20 a bottle. We were too stuffed for a dessert, so opted for coffees. This was the only minor complaint - the flat white was too weak, however the double espresso was great! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit andwe will definitely be making a return visit!

Booked a table for two last Sunday as I had received a voucher from my work colleagues. Boy did I enjoy the afternoon, the service was great and very friendly and helpful. The wife and I ordered the soup as a starter which was excellent and came with brie and stilton side nibbles which were sensational. For mains we had the beef with a super bottle of Bordeaux. The meal and service was outstanding and we will definitely return in the future. An excellent afternoon was had by all.

We have been wanting to visit for a while. We have eaten in all but one of Yorkshire’s Michelin starred restaurants now! We had a lovely table, very knowledgeable and polite, attentive service. My fish main off the specials board, a hake dish was so so good. Every dish we had was delicious, super fresh and beautifully presented. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, not at all pompous. We’re booked again to go for dinner for our next wedding anniversary and already can’t wait.

Our favourite place to eat. We have a lodge in Brandsburton so visit roughly twice a month! The staff helped plan my partners proposal to me in the lovely grounds outside. They’re always fab with our little one and nothing is too much trouble. The pipe and glass is such a special place to us and the food and staff never ever fail. The most homely and friendly Michelin star you will ever dine at. Thanks again for all our visits. See you Sunday. The Croft’s!

We have had the pleasure of dining at the 'Pipe and Glass' on Boxing Day and today ( Sunday). On each occasion the food was amazing and the service from all the wonderful staff made our visits even more special. On Boxing Day we had a fabulous Crab starter and the Goose which was perfectly cooked; also the Ox Cheek Suet Pudding which melted in the mouth. Everything was beautifully presented and full of flavour. We finished with a 'Apples Three Way desert' which we shared and was absolute bliss. Today we were lucky enough to visit again and enjoy the first Venison of the season and the Pheasant. Once again, fabulous. We are so lucky to be able to visit the 'Pipe and Glass' often so can appreciate the wonderful food and superb staff.. We look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year.

This is my 4th visit , I don’t think I will be going again. The ambience is excellent, the service fabulous but The food is good but not great, I am always left feeling a bit disappointed. The hype and the bill , so far , far exceeds the experience .
