100% the best sushi i've had in birmingham... possibly ever?? It's hard because i've had a lot of great sushi, some in krakow in particular that probably rivals this. Honestly everything was the venue, to the staff, to the food was fantastic. Only a small venue, 1 table and then seats at the counter where the food is prepared so ensure you book but likely you'll be at the counter as in most authentic sushi places. We had 2 rounds of 3 dishes each and this was more than enough as the portions were nice and big. Anything with soft shell crab or surf clam was particular good and also any of the futomaki which we tried all of, was great. I would go back here in a heartbeat, and to be honest currently the prices are very reasonable considering its the kind of place that could be michelin star at some point so i'd get in now

Can’t recommend this place enough. Amazing food, the flavours incredible. The salmon belly was just fantastic... The service was outstanding & it was so lovely to chat to the chef whilst he was cooking, so interesting to hear about different components of the menu..can’t wait to return! Thank you for a very lovely evening..

We ate here once before and finally got around to coming back. You do need to book in advance and you pay a reservation fee in case of a no show. The place is small with around 10 seats at the bar and two small tables. We were seated at the bar and tried a several dishes, including soft shell crab, sea urchin and sashimi. The only thing not to my taste was the sea urchin, but I am really pleased to have tried it. The food is very reasonably priced, but the alcohol has a pretty high mark up, but we enjoyed a bottle of wine. Still a great place and we will return.

Visited Friday evening for the third time. I love this place so much, have followed the chef on his journey from a previous restaurant to here and he is awesome. Both the chef and service team are so friendly and extremely talented. The sushi is easily the best i’ve eaten and i couldn’t ask for anything more from a sushi spot. 5 stars, more if I could :)

First time visit, after high praise from a sushi-loving friend, and I wasn't disappointed. Really excellent sushi, and great, friendly service. It's a small restaurant, and everything is handmade, fresh, just as it should be, and the service is as attentive as you'd expect with less than 20 seats! But the best bit was the food - highly recommended

Went for lunch at 2:40pm. Only 2 customers but aggressive Eastern European waiter with rubbish English told us off for not making a booking. Tried to make out they were SO exclusive. There was an empty table for 4 but he refused to seat us and insisted we must wait 5-10 minutes to be seated as he had to clean 2 spaces at the bar. He also said the chef has to cook rice so it will be a long wait to get food. I have never heard such a thing in a Sushi place! I said,”but you opened at 1pm! You are cooking rice now??” He said it takes 1 hour to cook rice. We left disgusted at the attitude of the waiter

I was extremely excited to try this place out. It was bigger than I expected, as I thought it was just seats at the chefs bar, but they had a couple of tables away from the cooking station. As there were three of us, we were seated at one of the tables instead of the chefs bar - which was a shame. However, the service was still fantastic and the food was delicious. When booking the table make sure to mention any allergies, this isn't prompted so make sure you remember. I forgot to mention my prawn allergy prior to arriving - but they were super accommodating (even though it created a lot more work for them). Highly recommend the plum wine, nigiri platter and the coconut and chocolate mochi... Delicious!!

Easily the best sushi restaurant in Birmingham. Some would say it’s expensive, but quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.

So it turns out that the best Japanese restaurant is in the heart of Birmingham and the very best sushi is created by a Polish chef. I have had many excellent meals and many delicious meals but this was in a class of its own. Seated around the bar, you watch chef Michal Kubiak skilfully make your sushi. Guided by the charming Polish waiter we ordered the assorted Nigiri platter - every mouthful was exquisite but highlights were the smoked eel and the sweet scallops. We had one final dish of heavenly salmon to conclude an exceptional experience.

A lovely dinner here, inc miso, seaweed salad, nigiri, sashimi, hand roll, hosomaki roll etc. Every single piece was created with passion and precision by the lovely chef/owner and delivered with great care and attentiveness by the friendly waiter. (They have known each other for 11 years apparently, and it shows!) The setting was perfect, with minimalist decor and low level music, very relaxing. We loved our meal (my partner has eaten at Sukiyabashi Jiro in Tokyo, so he’s a tough crowd! 😀) and really hope this neighbourhood restaurant continues to get the support it deserves. Thanks guys!

Went here with my girlfriend and had a fantastic experience. Sitting at the bar gave us an intimate dinner sat watching the incredibly skilled chef work. The waiter was friendly and helpful and made our experience much better. He recommended the crispy prawn and eel Futomaki, probably one of the best dishes I've ever tasted. This place is worth going to and we were more than happy to spend above our usual budget as the quality of food deserved it. Will be returning in the future and this has cemented sushi as a favourite of ours.

Very good quality fish. I got the nigiri set for one (£25) and added sake toro (salmon belly), which is seared aburi style. Were I to come again, I'd get lots of bluefin tuna, sweet shrimp, and sake toro--those were the highlights! But it was a great meal and price. Nice interior. Crappy neighborhood.

My wife and I have had the pleasure to eat here maybe 8-10 times in the last year, sometimes alone, at other times with friends or family. The food has been consistently good over that time. The fish is top quality and very fresh. The service is attentive and helpful. Seating at the chef’s table/bar where you can see the action and chat to the chef who will explain the origins of each fish. 4 different sakis available, 3 Japanese bottled beers, some wine choices, great G&T and of course green tea. In my view this is going from strength to strength. Booking essential as it only seats 10 people. Highly recommended is the salmon belly nigiri which needs to be preordered as they don’t have very much of it and it isn’t on the menu

Little restaurant traditional Japanese style - 10 seats around the bar and one table for 4 on one side. Super fresh ingredients, my favourite was the tuna sashimi that melted in your mouth but everything we tried was amazing. Perfect service. Will definitely come back.

Gaijin Sushi is a cosy little restaurant with an intimate dining experience. I dined here with my wife and we were seated on the bar stools. We both enjoyed watching the chef go about his craft. You could see the passion and focus the chef put into every dish. The produce was as fresh as it gets and was treated with the utmost respect. We got the nigiri platter and the sashimi platter to share. Both were fantastic. This is a quality japanese restaurant.

If you survive walking through the underpass to get there you will find a great little sushi place. It’s small and the food is really good so you might need to book. Would definitely go back but would probably borrow the chef’s nice knife next time for protection for when we go outside.
