I've always loved Wahaca so when I heard they were coming to Cardiff I was thrilled. Ever since they opened two years ago I've visited regularly and have had a consistently high level of service, food and atmosphere. The staff are friendly, food quality is always fantastic and so full of flavour, the place is always immaculately clean and it still looks brand new even today. Value for money is also good - you can spend as much or as little as you like but I'd say an average cost for a meal and a drink is about £15.
I usually go for the street food, the ones you can't miss are the Pork Pibil tacos, Steak tacos, Chipotle chicken quesadillas, and the Sweet potato taquitos. Be sure to try something you wouldn't ordinarily have - that's the joy of it!!
Highly recommend the place! :)
My friend took me here when I went to visit Cardiff after a year. This opened recently (within the past year that I haven't been to Cardiff). I loved it.
First of all, they used my favourite colours for decorating the place. That helped. There are three floors, each slightly different. The top floor where the toilets are has these swinging egg chairs :)
When you sit and say that you haven't been to Wahaca before, they explain how it all works. But, I would suggest getting the street food option, and to order more than one of the Black Bean Tostadas.
We were sitting next to two Wahaca veterans who were actually the ones who suggested the Black Bean Tostada. They knew what we were talking about because we had to order a second one because it was just TOO GOOD.
Everyone knows I love Wahaca. I’ve eaten there loads of times in London, I’ve written about their founder, 2005 Masterchef winner Thomasina Miers before, and later in August I wrote about how excited I was when she announced Wahaca was coming to Cardiff . I love them because the food is great, but also because they’ve won a Compassion in World Farming ‘Good Chicken’ award for sourcing from ‘enriched’ farms with greater respect for animal welfare. In fact, they’ve won numerous awards for quality, sustainability and design; including the Observer Food Monthly Award for Best Cheap Eat in the UK, and the Sustainable Restaurant Group of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
You know how the old saying goes… MasterChef contestants are like buses – you wait ages for one and then they all come along at once. In the space of just three weeks, MasterChef 2013 finalists Dale and Larkin have opened their high-end Chinese takeaway Hokkei on Crwys Road; MasterChef 2010 winner Dhruv Baker rocked up for a one-off supper club at Cafe Malaysia ; and arguably the biggest news of all, MasterChef 2005 winner Thomasina Miers opened the first branch outside of London of her much-lauded Mexican street food chain, Wahaca. Located in the heart of Cardiff city centre, Wahaca’s eclectically furnished multi-floor dining space has a great buzz. Murals, multi-coloured tiles and pot plants are all part of the décor mix whilst an evening no-reservation policy (snooze) means there’s a constant turnover of tables (there was a hefty queue by the time we left). The menu comprises of two main sections – street food i.e. sharing plates where it’s suggested you order 2-3 per person and platos fuertes i.e. bigger plates which serve one or can be shared. Both options are surprisingly good value with the smaller plates weighing in around £4 and the large plates £10. Nibbles of light and airy quaver-like pork scratchings (£4.45) were served with a chunky and zingy guacamole. They’re arguably the best scratchings in Cardiff – except of course for JA pork crunch . The scrumptious scratchings were washed down with a selection of tequila-loaded drinks from the cocktail menu (well-priced with most around £6). A pure classic margarita (£6.40) deftly balanced sweet, sour and booziness. Whilst a mojito (£6.25) with tequila substituted as the main ingredient (it was no worse for it) contained a generous kick of mint and a twist of lime.
Excellent Mexican food for a decent price. The menu is great - it has a large range of tacos (with plenty of vegan options that aren’t just black beans!) and interesting dishes such as crab tostadas. I also really like the decor here - it’s vibrant and colourful yet still modern and clean. Also the service was actually great!
Amazing place, you can order from street food 3 smaller plates with 3 different dishes. Taste explosion with every bite 🤤
Fantastic food and fantastic service!!! We went for the 'Favourites' sharing menu plus Mexico City nachos and the dips. All of which was really delicious! Our waitress, Sian, was so lovely and really made the whole experience. Can't wait to go back and would really recommend a visit ☺️
We had a group booking of 45 and the manager had very kindly booked out the whole top floor for us, which was really kind and made the eveni g that little bit extra special. The atmosphere was buzzing, with vibrant colours and a constant flow of Corona's and Cocktails adding to it.
The staff were extremely helpful and attentive and manged all of orders extremely wll, especially considering that most people had forgotten what they had ordered.
I ordered the pork pibil tacos to start and the chicken and chorizo enchiladas for my main. The pork taco had a nice balance of flavours and a good amount of spice, although I would have liked to have a seen a wedge of lime on the side and some fresh herbs on top to compliment the dish.
The enchiladas was a great portion size and was tasted nice, but didn't give me that wow factor. It also was accompanied by a small side salad and rice with kidney beans. I particularly enjoyed the rice, as it reminded me a little of rice 'n' peas. Overall a nice main with a delicious surprising accompaniment.
I really enjoyed my experience and the staff made it extra special for our large party of people, a big thank you to all the staff.
Veggie Nachos were really amazing and loved Churros!! Happy to see so many vegan options available. One of the best Mexican places in Cardiff 💯
Had a good dinner with delicious cocktails! The pork tacos were very tasty, however I found the meat filling to be a little dry. The fish tacos on the other hand were extremely crispy, while being moist and flaky on the inside! Definitely one of the best fish tacos I’ve had. The guacamole was fresh and helped to cut through the richness of the tacos, although a little more salt wouldn’t hurt. Lastly, the crispy cauliflower pieces were very crisp, however they were rather too tasty for its own good. Nonetheless, the service was excellent!
Overall enjoyable late lunch. Food was tasty (forgot to take photos) and drinks were good. Would have liked a choice of flour tortillas instead of just corn and would have loved a fajita option. Out serverJamli was great.
I’ve never had a bad experience here. The food is invariably delicious and the service is reliably friendly. At my visit today, there was a minor problem with one of the items we ordered, but our server, Sian and the rest of the team resolved it very quickly and kindly. We recommend the Sweet Potato Rainbow Bowl and the Allioli Mushroom Club Quesadilla. The guacamole is also fabulous.
Lovely friendly staff great food!
Great options on the vegan menu.
Had a great dinner with my husband here. We had buttermilk chicken tacos and free range chicken burritos with churros v vgo dessert.Overall, delicious food, refreshing atmosphere and excellent service. I will definitely recommend this place.
