We have been visiting the Quince & Medlar for over 30 years. Have always had amazing, delicious food with great service. Visited a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed a fabulous taster menu.

New Year's Eve dinner was a taster menu of 9 courses for £35, great value. We were a group of 5. Food was delicious as always. The atmosphere was cosy and intimate and Louisa was attentive as always. Even a complimentary glass of bubbly and popper for midnight. Colin appeared from the kitchen to join in the fun. We have never been disappointed with anything from this restaurant and will continue to make bookings.

What a cracking little place Seven of us dined at Quince and Medlar for our daughters birthday. The food was delicious and perfectly timed between courses. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Thank you

Enjoyed a great meal at the quince and Medlar last night. Beautiful food and delightful service in lovely surroundings. Standard of food was out of sight from the usual vegetarian offerings provided by ordinary restaurants. Cannot complement the owners highly enough. Will certainly return.

I’m a relatively new comer to this restaurant (17 years ish) compared to my wife’s family (30 years ?), but I love it as much as they do, I’m not a vegetarian, but that doesn’t matter a jot, the food’s loverly, great attention to detail, spectacular taste and presentation. The restaurant atmosphere is warm and welcoming, lots of happy memories made here.

A really lovely restaurant with a superb ambience. We visit 3 or 4 times a year and are never disappointed. The food is novel and inventive and we have thoroughly enjoyed the food. As we are not vegetarian this is praise in deed. Vegan options are available. A gem of a small restaurant with a nice selection of wines as well.

We had a delicious meal in this delightful restaurant on Saturday - we being one vegetarian and three carnivores. We all enjoyed the food and the house red. Would highly recommend the poached pear and ginger cheese, the parsnip and cashew plank and the ginger and orange torte. Shame we live in Wales - it's a long way to go to relive the experience.

We had a lovely beautifully prepared vegetarian meal which was perfectly rounded off with a dark chocolate, orange and ginger torte.

As annual visitors to the Lakes a visit this wonderful restaurant is something we and our non-vegetarian friends always look forward to. As ever we were not disappointed; between the ten of us we sampled most of the menu (with plenty of sharing). The food, presentation.ambience and welcome were all as lovely as we've come to expect - none of of us was disappointed. The house red was fine and excellent value, well above the standard of listed and more expensive wines in other restaurants. We, like other reviewers do not recognise any of the features of the recent negative review; it is difficult to believe that these people had visited the same restaurant two days before we did. Please keep up your excellent work Colin and Louisa. We look forward to our next visit - if only you were a bit nearer Dorset. Sue and Charles CS

Well done Colin and Louisa! We had yet another wonderful meal. You never disappoint us. Love this latest menu, we really struggled to narrow it down to one of each. Just means we'll have to visit again soon. We also enjoyed the house Sauvignon Blanc, very smooth and quaffable. We are pleased to see that a previous reviewer has articulately negated the negative review by StephAwb. It was more than harsh and unnecessary. We too had the Beetroot, Borlotti bean horseradish bundle along with the Basil pesto, ricotta cheese & pine nut rotollo and it was perfect. I must make mention that the highlight for me was the Summer Pudding, absolute perfection! I have been a vegetarian for over 30 years, I have been called fussy and pedantic about what and where I eat but I have never had one criticism about the Quince and Medlar. Good job guys :-)

Now there’s an conundrum this negative review of the Quince and Medlar by StephAwb The reviewer and we share some things in common: - my wife is a vegetarian/vegan since way back into the last millennium, me I’m more broad based but probably almost pescatarian - we have eaten quite often in Brighton - lastly have never posted on any social media platform or Tripadvisor. So why change the habits of literally a lifetime? Whilst we obviously acknowledge another diner’s personal experience of a much loved restaurant and their disappointment, regretfully we do not recognise the validity or criticisms inherent in that review. We regularly make the 900 mile round trip to see family in the Lakes and visit the Q&M as often as we can. We have never had anything other than the most memorable of meals thanks to the culinary genius that is Colin married (literally) to the professional ‘front of house’ that is Louisa. Over the decades we have had ample time to sample the differing menus and artistry of this first class vegetarian/vegan secret set in Cockermouth and have never been disappointed, in fact we always come away with a renewed respect and regard for the wonderful food and a great evening. I could go through the chosen menu options we had the day after the afore mentioned reviewer and how each was as usual cooked to perfection. We can however comment on the item in common. My wife had the balsamic beetroot & borlotti bean horseradish filo bundle main (shared as one does) as the reviewer and it was absolutely delicious, delicate, full of flavour and a rich moistness that countered the beautifully paper thin crisp pastry .. a genuine delight and a pleasure to eat. We will continue to patronise this very special restaurant owned by two people who care passionately about the food they serve, the service they offer and the vegetarian/vegan experience they provide to those fortunate enough to know this jewel in the Cumbrian Lakes. For my starter I chose the baked Cumbrian Blencathra cheese soufflé which was a delicious, melt in the mouth experience.... consumed too soon. Our rating: top marks again and so to Colin and Louisa Le Voi please keep innovating, excelling and providing many more memorable culinary occasions to regulars and newcomers alike at the multifaceted vegetarian experience that is the Quince and Medlar.

I dined here this evening with my partner and 16 year old child. We have been vegetarian for over 20 years and my son since birth. I have never written a review good or bad about any restaurant. However, I was so disappointed with the food that was served I feel I have to. Perhaps the chef was having a bad day. Perhaps living in Brighton we are spoiled with the quality of restaurants we can choose from. On the positive side the choice of wines were good as was the service. The restaurant was pleasant too. I had soup to start which was ok at best I had to season it myself, I had two spoons and gave it to my partner to finish. The main course of beetroot filo pastry was so dry I couldn't eat it. There was barely a smear of reduction on my plate. Again I gave it to my partner to finish. He had walked 10 miles earlier so he was willing to eat anything. He also thought his meal was very dry but ate it anyway. ( the lentals) We came home and I've just had to cook an omelette. I'm sorry that I have to write such a review but we feel so disappointed it felt appropriate.

We came to the quince and medlar for the last night of our holiday in the Lake District. It was amazing from start to finish. The drinks were so refreshing, I had the berry cordial. The food was delicious, modern and comforting. The staff were so polite and did everything they could to make our dinner wonderful. Thank you! Vegetarian restaurants are sometimes very informal or far too formal - this was just right! Would highly recommend 😊

We were given a voucher for this restaurant as an anniversary present, so booked a night in Cockermouth and made our visit there. It is amazing! From the moment you arrive, where you are shown to a lovely little sitting area, where you can enjoy a pre-dinner drink and peruse the menus in a leisurely way, to the lovely, calm atmosphere in the dining area to the superb cuisine - the whole experience is very special. The food was served in a very attractive way and tasted absolutely delicious. The tiny buckwheat pancake, with mushrooms and a delicate salad was a great starter, whilst my husband relished the cheese souffle. We struggled to choose which main courses to have, but I opted for the spiced lentils and roots dish which was a fascinating combination of flavours and wonderfully tasty. My husband was equally pleased with his balsamic beetroot and borlotti bean filo parcels with halloumi and other extras. The dishes were light but quite filling, but we decided we just had to find room for desserts, and were so glad we did. I absolutely loved the summer pudding - which looked and tasted outstanding - and i enjoyed a taste of my other half's passionfruit panna cotta! We returned to the cosy and attractive sitting room to enjoy coffee and fanstastic chocolates. There was an interesting wine list - we opted for a very good Fairtrade chenin blanc. It was lovely to get the chance to talk to talk to Louisa at the end of the evening and to learn about the way they had combined two houses to create such a lovely restaurant. This really is a superb restaurant and deserves its excellent reputation. I wish we lived nearer - but hopefully we will be back before too long!

From the welcome we received on arrival to the coffee and home made petit four at the end of our meal everything added up to make our visit to The Quince and Medlar a really lovely dining experience. Excellent food, attentive service and a relaxed atmosphere - we shall certainly visit again next time we are in the area.

We have returned to The Quince and Medlar many times in the past 26 years and we have never been disappointed in the choice of meals on their vegetarian / vegan menu. From starter to dessert the food is tempting and delicious. We both love to try the different combinations of flavours, especially the more unusual ones. Set in a calm atmosphere the hosts are friendly and helpful without being intrusive. The food is presented beautifully, with attention to detail; it is a delight to the senses, sight, taste and aroma. I am sensitive to headaches, but they only stock vegetarian organic wines and I have never had a headache from the red wine when dining there. Could not recommend it highly enough.

You know when you've had a really good meal at a restaurant, and then you go back a second time and somehow it isn't quite as good as you remember it? Each time I return to the Quince and Medlar, that thought flits across my mind... "Was it really that good?", and each time the answer is a resounding YES. The food is truly wonderful. Everything is delicious and beautifully presented, and the service is just about perfect. The restaurant is small, so each table receives excellent and timely attention. I leave others to rave about the individual dishes on the menu. But I would say that whatever you choose, you won't be disappointed. The only downside for me is that I live at the other end of the country and I know it will be months before I am able return to dine there again!

The Quince and Medlar never disappoints. The food is imaginative and delicious, the service friendly and attentive and the ambience welcoming and comfortable. You'll look at the menu and want to try every starter and main course, because they'll all look irresistible. It's always a tough choice. The same will apply when you see the list of puddings, but take it from me; choose the cheesecake. You'll not taste anything better, ever, in your entire life! :-)

I have eaten here a number of times and never been disappointed. You are treated royally from the moment you walk in. The food is always of an extremely high quality and a great place to spend an evening.
