A pub that has very good value food, welcoming staff, plenty of seats and customers are mostly locals. The pub comes with free parking as well.

Some time ago, I posted a pretty negative review for another pub in Durham. It was a chain pub that advertised great food, but the fact of the matter is that the food was bland and overpriced. Really, I could only recommend it for the beer and (sort of) the atmosphere. On the other hand, the Duke of Wellington (known affectionately as "the Welly") is probably about as good as this type of pub is going to get. The beer is reasonably priced, the food is darn good, the staff is pleasant, and the atmosphere is delightful. Simply stated, it's part of a chain, but it has the vibe of a local hangout. It's not what it's not, but it's a good example of what it is, and that's good enough.
