A bit away from the busy street but still a short walk from the North Bridge. The menu was a great sharing experience, oyster and clams to start in the best way together with two glass of prosecco rose'. Service discreet but present and responsive. Good atmosphere for the occasion.

Foodie Explorers | Glasgow Foodie |Reviews of Glasgow Restaurants and food| Food Blog | Travel Blog. Our intrepid reviewer Caz ventured along to The Magnum…how would it fare?. It was a grey drizzly night when I popped in to The Magnum for dinner. The warm and cozy atmosphere was a welcome respite from the cold and wet.

THE STREETS ALWAYS seem quiet when you saunter from Queen Street down towards Albany Street; quiet but with a degree of intrigue. After a minor refurb, The Magnum launched a new menu this week and after two excellent visits prior to this one, that intrigue was now completely focused on the food. My opening act was a rather enticing carpaccio of spiced duck with pickled fennel, cauliflower cous cous and crispy duck skin (£6.95). The sweetness of the lightly smoked meat was offset by the delicate acidity from the fennel with the presence of the cauliflower contributing an earthy note. The shards of crispy skin were inspired and added a degree of seasoning while the dots of balsamic reduction contributed another well-tuned layer of flavour. Overall, only a touch of good sea salt was needed to turn this dish into a real stunner.

We booked here for a team Christmas lunch. A couple of us had been meaning to try The Magnum for ages, so were looking forward to visiting. The Magnum is a nice venue and seemed bigger on the inside than it appeared on outside and is serenely decorated. We were all struggling to pick what to have from the menu as much of it sounded yummy. In the end as we had all eyed up the baked Camembert to share, we got two of those between the four of us. Then I went for the sausage of the day, which was lamb and thyme, another colleague went for tempura battered haddock and the other two went for the beef and rosemary burger. One of my colleagues had dithered on whether to get the burger as she was worried it would be big so asked the waitress for advice. She tried to describe it as best as possible to help her make a decision, which I thought was good service.

Spring has arrived in Edinburgh and we spent every moment of the Easter weekend soaking it up. Our spot of choice – The Magnum on Albany Street. The few tables available on the street outside are an amazing sun-trap, and we were lucky to snap one up for lunch. The Magnum is a great little New Town pub and the menu is slightly fancier than you might expect from a such a relaxed venue. It’s also great value for money with 3 courses coming in at £14.95 – lunch or dinner.

GIVEN THE DISTINCT lack of summer we’ve been having, I think this sunny(ish) day has to go down as one of the better ones, as we laud the happy drinkers outside The Magnum on Albany Street. Sarah and I had enjoyed a visit to this gastropub last year, meaning there would be added scrutiny this time around.

The Magnum is quite honestly a loving little place for a meal. On the outside, it looks like your general bog standard pub but inside it has a lovely feel inside. Lots of fairy lights, chandeliers and mood lighting, it's the perfect place to go for a date night. The service was very friendly from the moment we walked through the doors. Straight away offering to take our coats before showing us to our seats and taking our drinks order. Very prompt and efficient but still friendly and welcoming.
The food itself was pretty wonderful. I ended up switching my starer with my partner, as we both found we preferred each other's choice. So I started off with the haggis, I ended up loving the arbroath smokie pate. Was really fresh and light. Perfect starter to be honest. For our mains, I had the chicken burger because you can't beat a classic burger can you, and my partner had scottish rib eye steak which looked pretty wonderful. Now.... the desserts. Yes the starters and main course were lovely but The Magnum are winner when it comes to desserts. I went for the the chocolate fudge cake which, even though this was a few months back... I am still pining after it. It was just wonderful!
I would love to go back again soon. Even if it's just for a quick drink as I really liked the cosy feel about The Magnum!

The Magnum had a lot to live up to after our last visit, but it dealt with those expectations confidently, with superbly presented plates of food at reasonable prices. Well worth a visit if you’re in and around the town centre.

We went based on the high rating and were not disappointed. We ate from the bar menu and was happy with the food with the only negative I could find was the salad with the fish and chips needed some dressing. A splash of white balsamic would have bed perfect. The fish chowder was delicious and the desserts simple but tasty. The wine list is short but varied by country of origin and the French Chardonnay we had was quite drinkable. The service was fine and the bill reasonable , so nothing really to complain about.

We had an amazing experience at the Magnum restaurant! The food was absolutely delicious, and the portions were incredibly generous. The Magnum dish never disappoints, and I'm always impressed by the fresh and amazing quality of the food. It's evident that the chefs truly love what they do, and it reflects in every bite. Highly recommend this place for a delightful dining experience!
This is definitely a restaurant worthy of being in the top discussions for edinburgh. This was quite possibly the best food we have had in our visit to Scotland.
The service was prompt and knowledgeable about what the head chef had to showcase.
The restaurant is away from the busiest sections but worth the walk away from the chaos.
The duck breast was amongst the best duck dish I have ever had. The skin perfectly crisp, the meat perfectly cooked, and the flavour combinations were exquisite.
My wife had the monk fish, it was also cooked spectacularly. The seasonings and the entree was also a standout.
I would put this up with many Michelin starred establishments we have tried in terms of the dishes themselves.
Oh my goodness, this lunch was delicious. We ordered various small plates: open ravioli, ham and potato croquettes, bang bang cauliflower, calamari, duck bao, and rocket salad. Delicious. All perfect sizes for two people to share. Service was excellent and everything down to the background music was perfect. Love, love, love The Magnum.
In the 5 nights I was in Edinburgh, I ate here twice. First night was the venison, sticky pudding and plenty of gin and tonics. Second night, beer, pork belly starter, burger with black pudding, and the chocolate mousse. Both meals were some of the most memorable and delicious of my entire European travels. Every dish is unique and thoughtful.
Do yourself a favor and make this a stop on your trip! The staff will make you feel like you’ve ate here before and there is an amazing sense of community throughout. Terry, Amy, Cara and Andrew are tops and made this solo traveler feel at home in a foreign land♥️
Six people in our party. Service was great, food ranged from bread and olives to seafood and beef and salad. Everyone enjoyed their meal. To finish it off was the strawberries, cream and pistachio cake. Found this gem from reading Rick Stevs guide book. Definitely worth eating there.
Fabulous eatery with some outstanding dishes on offer, quiet location but still convenient location. Super friendly staff as well. Our group had a fantastic evening!
What a great find! Definitely 5 stars.
The monkfish was so delicious … every mouthful felt like a treat.
There was a delay with my dessert - they came to apologise before I even realised and made a great gesture as an apology.
Service was simply top. My apologies for forgetting to tip.
A great experience. Might have to come again to try the haggis bonbons …
Food is very well arranged and presentation is great. But I find the taste to be bland, especially when it was so good looking. My wife liked the taste, though. Service is generally very good. It was the only place that would accommodate us on the Easter Friday evening.
We had our lunch a month ago in Magnum which is located at a relatively secluded part of New Town.
It was our first time to have venison, and it was better that what we anticipated - the meat was done quite juicy and tender, though less flavourful than the other main we ordered, the slow braised beef daube.
I loved the haggis beeps and tatties as well, tasty and not overwhelming strong in flavour. And they offer good dessert too. Every dishes we had was nicely presented, and really friendly service.
Top notch food, quality ingredients presented beautifully. Exceptionally friendly, and professional staff, nice ambience in the restaurant. Well worth a visit, more central than you think- very easy to get to. Great value too, very reasonable,
