I had an incredible Chicken Karaage bento and my partner loved her veggie Japanese croquette. Best meal we've had in months and we will be back! Also enjoyed the coffee and banter/friendliness of the staff. The wall of manga/gifts are a nice touch along with the cat appreciation ☺️ Would recommend booking a table in advance, as they had to turn away some people (Very popular place on a Saturday).

Very cozy & cute cafe offering authentic Japanese food. The portion size is so generous and I love all the little extra touches added to each dish. I had pork katsu curry, which came with rich & yummy homemade curry plus huge katsu, and two different kinds of pickled veg. My kids shared karaage bento which was beautifully presented with colourful dishes. They had a nice selection of homemade desserts, sadly I didn't have enough room in my stomach but can't wait to try next time!

We had been meaning to try Kawaneko for a long while and our biggest regret is not having gone sooner. The place is small with a maximized layout, offering fun and fitting decor alongside some great tunes. We ordered quite a feast and were slightly underprepared given how generous the servings are. The corn fritters were soft, a bit sweet and chewy and I’ll probably not be able to visit again without ordering them. The pork loin katsu bento had a beautiful golden brown crunch and the mixed Japanese pickles and cabbage slaw paired as a perfect bite of freshness. Both my partner and I agree that Kawaneko has the best katsu we’ve had! We were stuffed to the brim afterwards so no room for dessert but all the options look incredible so we’ll be trying them again soon!

Kawaneko is our absolute favourite place to eat in Edinburgh. My partner and I stumbled into the cafe a couple of years ago and ever since we have made it a point to go as often as we can. It has the most delicious food, a great collection of manga/collectibles/cat merchandise and is run by the best people, who make us feel so welcome. If you have the chance to visit you absolutely should!

We order pork loin katsu curry and chicken karaage, chicken karaage was sooooo good that the curry was mediocre in comparison. Even though we waited for an hour for our meal, it was all worth it when we took our first bite! But then the owner told us that since it was her mistake that caused us to wait so long and gave us a discount! The service was great! I'll be coming back often! I hope this restaurant gets better and better!

Very nice Japanese bento. Portion is large. Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. Need to reserve as there are 4 tables only. Pay attention to the opening days and hours as well.

Cute and unassuming little place with great vibe! We came for the pork katsu curry specifically and left extremely happy! It was simply exquisite. The potions were filling and great value for money! We will be returning as soon as we can 😁

This place is a hidden gem for sure. We've immediately become regulars now and sharing it with all our friends and they all say the same, it's amazing! By now we've tried so much of their menu and every dish has been superb from the zesty and crisp chicken karaage to the tender and savoury hamburger steak, you really can't go wrong here. Not to mention the value for money which I can't emphasize enough. The atmosphere is so cozy and comforting, we love the cat books and large display of mangas in the bookshelves. Just make sure you get yourself a reservation if you plan to sit in as it's quite cozy here ☺️

Absolutely perfect pork cutlet curry. Miles better than any Katsu Curry I've had outside of Japan. Don't remember even having better in Japan (spent a lot of years there and must have tried a couple of hundred). The food here is really authentic, portions are big and you can tell they really take pride in what they serve.

Absolutely wonderful place! The food is authentically Japanese and definitely the best in Edinburgh. Highly recommend the meat croquette bento
