Lovely old hotel dating back to 1203. Huge accessible room and lovely restaurant and staff.

Had a night out in Gratham, and decided on the Angel & Royal due to its location in the centre of town.
Very old hotel with a dark reception, the courtyard would be lovely in the height of summer to keep the heat off, grab a few cocktails and relax.
The staff were brilliant as we had a problem with our room door shutting we had to slam it, informed reception and by the time we had come back from looking round the town it was fixed.
The layout of the hotel is showing its age but well kept and not a bad price for the middle of town.
Thought the £40 just to arrive early was a bit steep as it was clear that the room had, had a light refresh as it was noticed there were a couple of hairs in the bathroom and bath.
Location is great if you are planning a day and night out in Gratham, nice to be able to park for free also.
Due to location alone I would use again if needed.
We were on the 3rd floor and it was noticed that the local roads seem to be used as a drag strip by some young people to show off how loud their cars are, didn't happen all night but was noticeable with the window open, but quite enough to sleep with it shut.

Nice old hotel in the center of a somewhat rundown town. Friendly staff and decent food.
Good place to hide from the High Street!

We stayed for 4 nights early in September. The weather was unexpectedly hot, and so was our room in the evening. We quickly figured out how to cool it using their fan and two open windows. We greatly enjoyed our stay, the cool shaded patio was delightful, as was the food and service. We highly recommend this historic hotel.

Lovely staff and delicious breakfast in the centre of Grantham. Interesting old building that has been done up quite nicely, with plenty of character. Let down slightly by poor water pressure in the shower, but would still recommend.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights and the reason for 4 stars is because of the room we stayed in 304 located at the top of the hotel. Even with the sash windows open and the curtains open, the temperature in the room was "hot" & "stuffy" no air con, there was an excellent fan but we couldn't sleep with the noise of the fan going all night. The most important service of a hotel is a good sleep in my opinion.
We arrived on Sunday and were warmly greeted by Helena who was a very courteous and polite member of staff who we interacted with every afternoon and evening. A great asset to the hotel although we found out this is temporary for her and that she would be soon departing on an adventurous holiday. All of the staff were polite and fantastic from the ladies serving in the restaurant and the barman.
The food and service in the restaurant was excellent, we would certainly recommend eating there at some point as a resident or non resident. We didn't have breakfast as it was £14.95 per person and we are not big breakfast eaters. A smaller package at half the price offering tea or coffee with the option of toast or a croissant or a tea cake or a bowl of cereal would and could be popular as a suggestion.
The reception, bar, bistro, restaurant are all well maintained and the downstairs toilets have both been recently renovated by the look of them. Hopefully the rooms will soon follow.
We would certainly visit and stay again!

Had a lovely 2 night stay because I was going to nearby Belton House. Friendly staff at the front desk and the hotel is clean, welcoming and the history is interesting. I didn't dine in the restaurant due to nothing taking my fancy. Would stay again!

A delightful hotel with bags of history and very friendly and pleasant staff. We didn't stay here so can't comment on the bedrooms but the communal areas like the lounge, bar and restaurant were really nicely decorated and if it had been a little warmer, there's also a pleasant outside seating area. The restaurant had a great atmosphere and the food was good quality although a few more vegetables would have been appreciated, to make us feel less guilty about scoffing the chicken pie and beautifully cooked chips! We'd definitely return.

Stopped in for afternoon coffee. Very good service in a comfortable toom. Much better than many of the cafes around. Some real history here too. Recommended.
