Cal's Own hosted a wonderful birthday party for my son and his friends. The place is superb and all of the kids loved it. A variety of allergies were catered for and everyone was stuffed with delicious food.
From my adult point of view I've had pizza at Jamie's Italian, in restaurants in Italy, New York and many other places besides. I wholeheartedly believe that the pizzas here are beyond anything I've had elsewhere. Calvin is a genius.
First time visiting Cal’s Own, and I must say the food was an absolute delight! The quality of the ingredients were outstanding, does not compare to any pizza restaurant we’ve ever dined at. Hats off to Cal for the real quality food!
Probably one of the most delicious pizzas in the whole city! I would have given 5 stars if the toppings weren’t so expensive. We added Nduja (£3.95) which is fairly priced but the mushrooms and fresh chillies (£2.95 each) were not worth it for how little we got.
Had the pleasure of enjoying a Korean Chicken Pizza as well as a artichoke pizza. While you may initially think a slice of pizza is expensive. You realize the size of a slice is a substantial meal and once you take a bite you realise you have the best pizza available in your mouth. The finest quality ingredients equally making the best pizza you have tasted, immediately justifies the price. 5/5 Would recommend to all pizza lovers and I promise you will never order another average takeaway pizza again!
I had an excellent slice of pizza here . It tasted really authentic. I chose the artichoke one and my friend the margarita. Both were hot and full of flavour . It was 8pm when I went and still three hours till closing time - a lot had been sold out making the selection seem a little sparse !
Would highly recommend for authenticity, taste and value !
Use to be, and still is the best pizza in the North East. Premium cheese pie is unreal and great value - easily enough for 2. Only tried a couple of the other slices but all equally good (pepperoni and artichoke). People complain about the staff but I personally feel it is more no nonsense and a man who knows what hes doing/passion rather than rude imo.
The Pizza here is amazing. The best pizza I've had in the UK. You'll struggle to get better. Less is more with the ingredients, the owner's menu is designed to choose the set pizzas which are authentic. Yeah they are slightly more than local pizzarias but you're paying for quality ingredients cooked the right way.
To finish, please look no further than the cheesecake. It is out of this world - there isn't anything better available.
Cal is a fantastic host, working hard. Support your local business and local restaurant.
these guys really know their stuff...the passion cal seems to have about the food he is making really comes through with the fantastic pizzas they have to offer; only the best ingredients, at a very reasonable price for the amount you get.
Try a philly cheese steak as well - the rib-eye is top notch and the freshly baked Hogie makes for an authentic american experience
don't pay too much attention to the bad reviews, too many people don't know good food, real shame, their loss.
Absolutely the best in the North East. Cal makes the most amazing sourdough, wood-fired pizza. The small plates are also so delicious. Portions are so generous that we usually take some pizza home to enjoy the next day. Highly recommended although do make sure you take cash with you.
Amazing food, we had slices of the Korean Chicken Pizza today, and Arancini, both fabulous. Loads of choice, and we'll definitely be back to try different things. So lucky to have this on our doorstep!
Cals serves authentic Neapolitan Pizza. Pizzas are made with real high quality ingredients. Service was good. Had a fab night . Will be back soon. Even the little one said it’s the best Pizza . Keep up the good job.
Overall, good Neapolitan pizza.
Some toppings were excellent, others left a little wanting. Certainly go for minimalistic toppings to fully appreciate the base and the ingredients on offer.
There was a nice smokiness to the base and a really good crust.
You must understand that this type of pizza is meant to be quite moist so don't think that's an error if you're used to a different kind of pizza, but it may not suit all.
We had the Italian sausage which was a bit disappointing despite being from an excellent butcher. We wanted this with fennel but were told at the time of ordering there was no more fennel -somewhat frustrating we hadn't been told this when being seated and given the menu.
We also had the nduja as a topping by itself which was great -a nice, genuine spicy nduja and none of this "nduja paste" nonsense.
Lastly we ordered a cheese-free version of a Napoli -no capers on offer so went for anchovies and black olives. Easily the best and highly recommend.
Wine list was pretty forgettable to be honest.
Despite being an 8 o'clock table on a Friday evening, we did get the feeling they were trying to clean down around us at times.
However, I enjoyed the pizza and would recommend, though didn't necessarily leave feeling "I must go back there soon". Though that Napoli was great.
Give it a try and see what you think.
