It is an amazing place for all the Potter heads where you can sit and have some butter beer. Old construction and English environment, one of the best ways to spend time with your friends.
the icon place.. secret alley location .. and the flavourful food.. this is a must visit place for any of the Harry Potters fan too!
while you are at it, try the famous fish and chips!
If we didn't have our friend to guide us, it would've been quite difficult for us to find this place. It's tucked away in some twisting alleyways, and I was surprised to find such a large pub when we got there.
We ordered a Buttermilk Chicken Burger, a Dirty Burger and a plate of Fish and Chips. The food was delicious and definitely worth the price I think. My Dirty Burger certainly lived up to its name, it was very messy to eat, but very delicious.
Would love to be back in the future, definitely a good bar to chill with your friends.
My friends and I recently headed into Oxford for the day. 1) to get out of London and 2) see the sights of this historical college city. Famed haunt Turf Tavern is hidden away in a series of alleyways, although this hasn’t ever impacted it’s popularity or depth of lore. It’s a spacious eatery, with plenty o’ seating options with two courtyards (unless there was another other secret ones I missed). The day wasn’t quite as sunny as we would have hoped for, but reason enough to dig into a Sunday roast treat. Initial service was a bit of fizzer, the guy didn’t particularly seem to care for friendliness and barked orders at us.
There was a warmer reception from the food. £12ish gets you meat, potatoes, yorkshire pudding as well as baked parsnip, carrot and kale. We all were of the same vein, and ordered the pork belly. I was a fan of the pud, and there was enough gravy to make the most of it. The meat wasn’t my favourite, it was a bit fatty without any of the crackling goodness. Veges were okay, but the duck fat potatoes were hearty, and an enjoyable side. Turf Tavern makes for a good drinking spot for the locals and a must do for the visitors as well.
This place like a century old and is hidden in the streets of Oxford! This place is brilliant and has the best fish and chips to offer with the some great freshly brewed beer. Likes of Bill Clinton have visited this place, it is highly recommended!

This was part of our bar crawl this evening and is definitely a must visit if you're visiting Oxford.
Everyone is super friendly, washrooms are clean(which is a big plus), drinks are well priced and the food we ordered was really lovely.
I particularly liked their burgers and pims and lemonade.
The ambience in Turf Tavern is something for which one has to go to this place! Their fish and chips is tasty, and they have got some good ales and beers. This place will add to your pub experience in Oxford! And I personally I loved their walls...so vintage!!
Turf tavern is just one of the places you need to know and you need to go to when you are in Oxford or visiting Oxford. A beautiful pub with a long legacy of customers, pretty much anyone who's ever been anyone and has studied at Oxford, this is the place Bill Clinton used to come to 'inhale'. Add to it some great ales and beer, n it adds up to a perfect Oxford pub experience.
Great place to have a pint or three! Nice food (had the fish n chips, with a great tartare!).
Lot's of people and a very jolly place, with several interior rooms and outside spaces.
Definitely a must do in Oxford with wonderful Classic British food.
Enough can't be said about how this pub organically fits the space. Character oozes from every corner. Dark inside with low ceilings it's history is undeniable. It's busy but bigger than you think if you explore all the corners. Unfortunately, expect tour groups to be led right through but think of it as fresh meat for people watching.
They have a broad selection of beers on tap. There is the usual selection of what I call "training" beers, the usual low alcohol, English tax avoiding stuff. But the selection is decently broad. Even in an off peak time the line at the bar can be long so don't wait to be empty before getting in line for another.
The fish and chips were really delicious. Unfortunately, chasing down a server to get some vinegar was difficult enough at 3pm. I hate to think of it during a busy time.
Still, a wonderful place to visit and a must see if you want to experience a truly old school pub with all it's charm and warmth.
A cozy must-visit place in Oxford. Food is delicious, although there are not so many items. Orders must be placed through app. Servers don't come to ask you what you want. Sometimes tavern staff don't know that clients left and you arrived. So, cleaning tables are sometimes neglected. Thatsxwhy I give 4 stars for service. However, overall, bringing food ordered is quite quick and staff are generally polite. In conclusion, I give 5 stars because I enjoyed my visit.
This tavern eatery is located inside the small lane under the bridge in the photo.
Walk inside the lane and you will reach the Tavern. It has indoor and outdoor seating.
They have a QR code menu only. Add the items to cart and wait for your order. It seems this tavern is very popular. People were flocking in for beer and a relaxed meal.
We ate chicken fingers, tuna sandwhich, beef burger and a coca cola. Everything was very tasteful including the sandwhich. The side salad was well made too even though its just greens.
On a busy day, I suggest not to hold off a table since people wait for seating. Service will definitely be slow on a crowded day. Happy to know that it is dog friendly too.
Amazing place, full of history. The beers are good, although some were not cold at all (and who likes that?). The service was great though, and the toilets super clean.
Walking there through narrow alleys added to the experience. You then arrive at what they call hidden garden, basically a bumch of terraces. When we were there it was 23C and sunny so the atmosphere was super. Add to that a nice Korean chicken burger and a good beer and you've got a lovely late lunch. Only minus was the service. I had the feeling they were a bit overworked, we had to ask for someone to clean the table which was done reluctantly. Food was ready quite quickly.
Turf Tavern has a nice charm to it. Burger was decent. A bit on the pricier side but still alright. Would come again any time.
Got the Steak and ale pie and cheese toastie. Both were delicious. Good chips. Grilled cabbage was nice and tender-crisp. Shockingly large space given where it’s situated down a small alley. Appreciated the half-pint option for draft. Service was quick.
One of the oldest pubs I've ever been to. This one is historic! Beer is better than excellent, food is good. Since I am 6'4" (193cm) the warning "duck or grouse!" was very apt! Commiserating with a fellow sufferer, I wound up meeting a very nice couple and had a great Oxford conversation and a delightful evening.
The patience of the staff is frequently tried, by tourists who don't know how to queue, but they mostly handle it well ;)
A real part of Oxford history. Love the coziness in the older section. Mind your head. Low beams. More rooms in the back and several outdoor patios. Therevare at least two ways to get there. The fun part is finding the entrance. A few years ago a more accessible and visible entrance was created. Will do again.
Two of us had lunch at Turf Tavern when visiting Oxford recently. It was very busy, but we were fortunate to grab an outdoor table as soon as we arrived. Food was served promptly and was very nice indeed. The barmaid wasn’t sure if the nachos were available when I placed my order as they were waiting on a delivery, so we shared the salt and pepper squid and halloumi fries instead. A great lunch in a very historic setting.
